Discovering Computers: Fundamentals, Fifth Edition (Shelly Cashman) ReviewA friend of mine has this book and it is already wrong a few chapters in. I've not read much, but from this one example I can gather that this was poorly written and god help anyone whose professor requires this book.
The book states clearly, "The actual disk's capacity sometimes is different from the advertised capacity because of bad sectors on the disk."
This is oh so very false.
1K bytes = 1024 Bytes, and 1MB = 1024 KBytes, and that is how it's been from the beginning. However, Hard Drive Manufacturers simply use 1K = 1000, 1M = 1000000, creating about 7% difference between advertised and actual format size.
The system Hard Drive Manufacturers actually use is called binary prefix, as seen here: [...]
as compared to what we are all used to, decimal prefix
[...]
This is actually quite simple, and for the author of this book to say it is because "something partially breaks and kinda messes it up" is wrong. You have to TRY to get something that wrong.
