International Legal Research in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell (West Publishing)) ReviewI recently reviewed this book for possible use and reference to my international legal research interested students and found it had little to offer that they could not get online, in the first instance. With the sophistication of internet searching tools, as well as specialty link-lists & databases of materials, there is little 'meat' left on this book's bones - at least for me. I do have a related certificate degree in international legal practice. Perhaps useful for the complete novice, but of limited use to those who have done a bit of researching online themselves. And with a growing body of available resources through national and international governments and organizations, the book would give us more if it were be simply a list of example projects and lists of the best links for those. Too many words - too little help. Of course, no book can be an excuse for not reviewing the latest state of the law online in this day and age, especially before tackling a new research theme or case as a lawyer or law student. Just as no general book can 'shephardize' - that is, trace the precedential order of cases consistent and distinguished. Still, too little time spent discussing the theory of cases and how to decide where to start and go - the process of legal research. As for knowing the current state of the law by consulting this work, I would not expect it to do that, either. And it didn't.International Legal Research in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell (West Publishing)) OverviewThis Nutshell provides a basic introduction to international legal research for the non-specialist. It offers guidance through the unfamiliar pathways of research using international legal materials and demystifies the world of treaties. Since it's aimed at the non-specialist, it provides straight-forward background information on the United Nations and the European Union and includes guidance using the documents and legal materials of these institutions. There are extensive links to the rich world of Web resources, but it also describes paper research tools that remain important in this field. Finally, it sets out a road map for approaching an international legal research problem.
