Windows Vista Secrets: SP1 Edition ReviewSomewhere inside these 645 pages is a terrific computer book desperate to get out.
Unfortunately, the useful tidbits are buried by the jargon, disjointed outline, and the wince-inducing writing. The authors say "functionality" instead of feature, "enabled" instead of On, and (I kid you not) "circular in nature" instead of "round."
But it's even worse that huge chunks of Windows Vista get no coverage at all! Here are a few topics that don't appear in the book, or at least the index: Scanning. Faxing. Flash drives. Monitors. Dial-up connections. Safe Mode. Hibernation. Filename extensions. Network projectors. ReadyBoost. Dynamic disks. Shadow Copy. Burning CDs or DVDs at the desktop. Problem reports. Driver rollback. Driver signing. Ease of Access Center.
And there's no information at all about Vista's amazing new speech recognition--only a passing reference in the Tablet PC chapter, even though it works on any Vista PC.
So if you get this book, you'll also need ANOTHER book if you want comprehensive coverage of Vista.
Meanwhile, huge swaths of the book are padded by pointless tables and listings. Do we really need *26 pages* of symbol-font printouts?
Or a half-page table that explains the difference between Small Icons, Medium Icons, Large Icons, and Extra Large Icons? (The table says that "Medium Icons are similar in style to Large Icons, but smaller." Wow, really!?)
There are lots of illustrations, but most are full-screen shots, shrunken down to to fit the page. The result is that you can't read any of the text in them.
The authors of this book clearly know a lot. But they should have been paired up with writers, editors, and indexers who could help them set that information free.Windows Vista Secrets: SP1 Edition Overview
Follows the highly successful first edition with over 25% more content, including extensive coverage of the latest update, Service Pack 1
Addresses a huge market of consumers eager to learn about hidden gems and secrets in Vista and SP1
Covers features that are not disclosed in Microsoft's books or help files
A highly connected and qualified author has gathered information from an extensive network of Windows beta testers and thousands of readers, as well as conducted his own experiments on the new OS
New chapters cover personalizing and configuring Vista, networking, Zune, Vista and ultra-mobile PCs, Windows Home Server, and many more new topics

Introducing Ubuntu: Desktop Linux ReviewThere is a lot of information here, but 90% of it is the kind of stuff you just figure out from noodling around a bit and paying attention. The author mostly avoids issues that will change with new releases of Ubuntu. When a new version of the operating system comes out every 6 mos, you just can't stay on top of it all. So this turns into a very broad introduction to the most stable aspects of Ubuntu 7.04.
It is very comprehensive hand-holding for those either coming to Linux OSs fresh from a lifetime of Windows and Gates or anyone who is actually new to computing in general.
More timely, relevant, and personalized information can be found online...for free.Introducing Ubuntu: Desktop Linux OverviewCompletely free and highly robust, Ubuntu has the power to bring the Linux desktop to the masses. INTRODUCING UBUNTU: DESKTOP LINUX is your key to learning this new, user-friendly, and free alternative to Windows. Think of it as a personal tutorial, a one-on-one class with an expert user of Ubuntu. It begins by helping you choose the right Ubuntu for you (yes, there's more than one), and guides you through installing Ubuntu, managing the desktop, installing printers, and getting online. From there, the book moves on to describe how to perform everyday tasks under Ubuntu, such as sending and receiving e-mail, playing MP3s and movies, messaging with friends, working with digital images, and much more. There's plenty of information on how to use OpenOffice.org programs such as Writer, Calc, and Impress as well. While this is an excellent book for the general consumer, the book also addresses business-oriented users of Ubuntu for the small to medium-sized business (SMB) market through the use of sidebars. This is the only "up-and-running" guide to Ubuntu you will ever need.

Upgrading and Repairing Microsoft Windows (2nd Edition) ReviewI should first state that I am a BIG fan of Scott Mueller and his book series "Upgrading and Repairing PCs". Mueller is THE authority when it comes to PC hardware and I've been his fan since 1995. Thus, I decided to order his first book on the Windows operating system.
Now here's the review of U&R Windows:
Pros:
Mueller goes into the history of DOS and Windows in very intricate detail in the first chapter and it's very interesting. He then proceeds to cover Windows operating system upgrades and installation scenarios. A detailed explanation of the product activation is explained and is most intriguing. Mueller also goes over the different versions of Windows (OEM, Retail and Volume) with differences in each.
Then he goes in the various processes used in Windows startup routines in his famous "last to the minute detail" explanation of registry entries, and system processes. A healthy and detailed list of Windows services, what they are and how they work are given in chapter 4 and reading this chapter was quite enjoyable.
The rest of the book follows with networking, tweaking, troubleshooting, file systems, data recovery, securing the operating system and scripting. I was quite pleased to see a section detailing on how you can reset a Windows administrator password.
Cons:
Chapter 8 of the book, Protecting and Securing Windows, needs a serious re-write and is the most disappointing part of the book. Although 3 competing software firewall are discussed (Norton Personal Firewall, Tiny Personal Firewall and Sygate Personal Firewall), only 2 anti-virus programs (Norton Antivirus 2005 and AVG Free Edition) are discussed. Where is NOD32, Kaspersky or Mcafee?
The spyware removal section is the standard "lock, stock and barrel" answer of using Ad-Aware and Spybot to clean off spyware, with a suggestion to use HighJackThis at the very end. For an advanced Windows repair book like this, I was really expecting more from Mueller.
Completely missing from the book is mention of any of the freeware Sysinternals utilities (Filemon, Regmon, Autoruns, etc) that are so vital to troubleshooting Windows (and FREE!). A discussion of Windows PE or BartPE would make this book golden. Device detection information using system information utilites such as Everest, PCI32 or Belarc Advisor would also be an asset to this book.
Also, a scripting chapter (presumeably made by Brian Knittel, co-author of the book) goes in "deep and heavy" into scripting and seems out of place in a book like this.
Summary:
Overall, I like this book. It appears, however, that Mueller's authority is mostly in the hardware arena and not in the software one.Upgrading and Repairing Microsoft Windows (2nd Edition) OverviewThe ultimate guide for anyone who wants to know how Windows ticks and how to keep it ticking.Upgrading and Repairing Microsoft Windows, Second Edition, is the book hardcore Windows Vista and XP users have been clamoring for. Mueller, author of the bestselling Upgrading and Repairing PCs, and Knittel, famous for his bestselling Special Edition Using Windows books, now bring you an equally in-depth guide to Windows troubleshooting and repair. This comprehensive resource includes information on:Installation

Linux Bible 2010 Edition: Boot Up to Ubuntu, Fedora, KNOPPIX, Debian, openSUSE, and 13 Other Distributions ReviewIt seems like a lot of the Linux books out there right now pick a single distribution and teach you that one. Wiley's Linux Bible (2005 Edition) by Christopher Negus takes a different approach that may be valuable to you.
Chapter List:
Part 1 - Linux First Steps: Starting With Linux; Running Commands from the Shell; Getting into the Desktop
Part 2 - Running The Show: Learning Basic Administration; Getting on the Internet; Securing Linux
Part 3 - Choosing and Installing a Linux Distribution: Installing Linux; Running Fedora Core and Red Hat Enterprise Linux; Running Debian GNU/Linux; Running SUSE Linux; Running KNOPPIX; Running Yellow Dog Linux; Running Gentoo Linux; Running Slackware Linux; Running Linspire; Running Mandrakelinux; Running a Linux Firewall/Router; Running Bootable Linux Distribution
Part 4 - Running Applications: Paying Music and Video; Working with Words and Images; E-Mailing and Web Browsing; Gaming Alone and Online
Part 5 - Running Servers: Running a Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP (LAMP) Server; Running a Mail Server; Running a Print Server; Running a File Server
Part 6 - Programming in Linux: Programming Environments and Interfaces; Programming Tools and Utilities
Appendix A: Media; Appendix B: Entering the Linux Community; Index
The main difference I see in this book is the lack of focus on a particular distribution. The different chapters (with the exception of Part 3) are all designed to teach you the basics of Linux apart from any flavor. This allows you to learn core skills that can transfer between whatever distribution you might be using at any given time. Part 3 gives a short coverage of each major distribution available on the market. If you're wondering about the pros and cons of each, this section of the book will help you decide where you want to start your specific distribution-specific learning.
Like all Bible titles, this is pretty big (800+ pages). While there's a lot of useful information, I don't know that I'd recommend this to be your *only* Linux book. 200+ pages deal with the distribution information, which leaves considerably less room for core Linux information. The other chapters cover the gamut of Linux software (server, desktop, productivity, internet, games, etc.), so there's not a lot in in-depth coverage on any one particular area. I'd probably position this as a very good entry level book to teach the reader about Linux and help them decide what distribution to pick. From there, I'd pick a book specific to my distribution of choice and continue my learning.
If your the right audience and in the right situation, this book will work well for you...Linux Bible 2010 Edition: Boot Up to Ubuntu, Fedora, KNOPPIX, Debian, openSUSE, and 13 Other Distributions OverviewThe definitive guide to the basics of one of the most popular operating systems in the world
Whether you're a first-time Linux user or you're migrating from another operating system, this book is an ideal introductory guide for getting comfortable with the building-block nature of Linux. Written by bestselling author Christopher Negus, this guide is packed with in-depth descriptions on the basics of Linux desktops, servers, and programming tools and gets you up to speed on all the new and exciting features of the newest version: Linux 2010. Negus walks you through transitioning from Windows or Mac and helps you find the Linux distribution that best meets your needs.
You'll explore more than 18 Linux distributions, including the latest versions of Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, OpenSUSE, Slackware, Knoppix, Gentoo, Mandriva, SLAX, and more. Plus, you'll discover how to set up secure, fully functioning Linux server systems and get up-to-date installation advice.
Topics Covered:
Getting off the Ground with Linux
Running a Linux Desktop
Learning System Administration Skills
Setting Up Linux Servers
Choosing and Installing Different Linux Distributions

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard: Peachpit Learning Series ReviewRobin Williams seems to have a uncanny clairvoyance that not only helps her figure out that William Shakespeare's works were possibly written by Mary Sidney, but also helped her get a Leopard guide in the Apple stores the same day Leopard came out. Ok, she had some help from Apple by getting an advance copy. Maybe she used the Time Machine feature to go back to the days of Romeo and Juliet. It's a pretty powerful feature of Leopard.
Obviously Apple trusted her enough to provide her with a pre-release copy of Leopard as well as make her the featured Leopard book in the store. In the Mac publishing world, she's about as well known and well respected as ol' Bill Shakespeare himself--and written almost as many works. Unlike Bill, reading her books are easy and straightforward arming non-technical users with the skills and understanding to attack Leopard head on.
In particular, Robin's style is to expertly use page layout and screenshots to explain the features of an operating system in small bites everyone can digest. I enjoy the fact she doesn't talk down to her readers. She expects a basic understanding of how to use a mouse and keyboard. This book is designed for a Mac or even a PC user making the transition to Leopard, either via upgrade or by the fact it came with the Mac. She walks the reader through all the features of the Leopard operating system. She apologizes for not covering the iLife or iWork suites, but clearly points out this is a book on Leopard. I'm sure she realizes that if the book were too big, readers would be intimidated. While it's over 450 pages, she uses a great table of contents and index to allow the reader to hone in on just the info they are interested in. Want to know how to do screen sharing..no problem? First, she marks it in a "Tech Stuff" section so novice or intimidated users can avoid it. Then she puts it in a logical chapter of "Get connected and share files." Then a nice screen sharing section appears. Can't find it there? Check the index either under iChat or Screen Sharing. She clearly spent lots of time making sure her book was extremely user friendly, just like the operating systems she covers.
Not only does she cover practically all the "300" new features of Leopard, but includes great troubleshooting advice for when things go wrong. The advice she gives is as good or better than what you'll get on the phone calling tech support or stopping by the "bar". If her troubleshooting section doesn't cover it, you'll need a technician to come out!
My one complaint is she should have marked those features new or different in Leopard. That would allow a upgrader to focus on just those new items of difference in Leopard. Knowing her though, she did a careful analysis and determined there wouldn't be enough white space on the page and left it out.
This book is not intended for intermediate or advanced users. You won't find out which port to open for screen sharing or it's inner workings--just how to initiate it. I contrast her books to more "manual" like books that cover every feature in depth. This book is designed to hold the readers hand through the steps or learning.
I avoided Shakespeare in high school, relying solely on those ubiquitous yellow and black "notes." Hey, her book is kinda the same thing. Avoids all the fluff and gets down to the nitty gritty of what you need to know. Will future generations attribute her expert writings to a man? I don't know, but I'm sure glad our generation has such an expert artist of words and pictures to teach us how to use our Macs.
Pros: Outstanding layout and organization. Excellent descriptions for novice Mac users. Enthusiastically recommend it to all new Leopard and Mac Users. Use this book as a starting point in your learning!
Cons: Not for intermediate users, no clear distinction of Leopard features

This is a great tool for newcomers, as well as those who have been running Windows 7 since the beta release. Mac OS X Snow Leopard for Power Users ReviewAs a former comp sci professor and four-year Mac user, I should be the target audience for this book and that is probably why Apress sent me a copy and asked me to review it. I was so disappointed to find a book that should never have been printed. It is a book that desperately wants to be a website (or a regularly updated ebook), but as printed material, its useful shelf life can be measured in single-digit months. With the latest version of Mac OS X (Lion) already announced for a summer 2011 release, the clock is ticking and this book comes too late to be taken for anything more than a curiosity... something to glance through at the bookstore and possibly gain a few tips from, but not to buy... not at the price on my publisher-provided copy of fifty bucks (now smartly lowered to forty), but only buyable at half that.
So what's not to like? Well, look at your bookstore shelves for a book on how to use a particular application. That book has a finite useful life and if it's a Microsoft app, that's about 3-5 years. But what if the book has several dozen apps with shorter update timelines than Microsoft? Well, that means that portions of the book will become obsolete very quickly. In the case of this book, chapter 4 talks about Safari, but it is Safari 4 and not the current Safari 5 with extension support. The author notes this in the intro to chapter 4, but nothing is done to remove the now-pointless and lengthy discussion about how to hack Input Managers to get around Safari 4's lack of extension support.
Another thing that comes across fine on a website or ebook is the less formal writing style, grammar, and conversational tone that you wouldn't expect to see in a computer book that targets "power users." Thus, we get a lot of unneeded trash-talk about applications, the business models chosen by their developers, and user interface design (when you insult an app and then praise the most recent version that "fixes the problem," why bother griping about old versions that nobody is going to see?). If you can overlook the spotty grammar, endless self-promotion of the author's other books, and aging hipster tone ("Bee-yoo-teeful", "abso-frickin'-lutely", "Dude!", "What the...? Not cool guys. Not cool at all."), then there ARE some useful tips to pick up here if you already own these apps or are thinking about downloading and/or buying them. Of course, there are magazines that provide similar content (i.e. product reviews) on a regular basis and they are updated once a month and you can get years of information for the cost of the cover price of this book. Or course, there are websites that do the same thing for free.
So would I buy this book? Definitely not in print unless I could find it for less than half the cover price. Now if the ebook is regularly updated and updates are pushed to customers, then I could see this being a great investment at full price. There are numerous URLs and code/command-line snippets in this book that readers will definitely want the click-ability and copy'n'paste-ability (e.g. the 256 character search command in chapter 3 or the code on page 64 that has a bug in it caused by an error in using two if-then statements when one if-then-else is actually needed) that an ebook can provide. And the weird sizes of some pictures, odd fonts, and large blank gaps at the bottom of many pages tell me that this book was designed to be an ebook first and foremost. Buy this as an ebook (if regularly updated) or a printed copy (at half price), but watch the clock and expect to be spending a lot of time checking websites for more recent info.Mac OS X Snow Leopard for Power Users Overview

Mac OS X Lion Bible ReviewMacOS Lion is significantly different from previous OS X versions. In many ways it's not as intuitive. I still miss "Save As" . An experienced writer and Macintosh expert - Galen takes the complexity out of OS. Mac OS X Lion: Peachpit Learning Series ReviewI just bought a Macbook Air after 20 years of using MS Windows. Quite a change! The Mac was basically useless for the first couple of days. I even had trouble learning how to use the trackpad. After a few days of stumbling, I knew I needed help. Apple retail stores have a pricey series of classes, but I needed something quick that I could do on my own time.
I researched the various books on Macs and OS X and settled on the "missing manual" series, which I'm familiar with because of our iPad. No luck. The latest Missing Manuals are only up to Snow Leopard, and at these prices I'd like something current. MM will be available in a couple of months, I'm told. So I went to my local B&N to thumb through what is already out (a couple of weeks after the release of Lion) and I was so impressed I actually paid full price for this book. At first, I thought I might need the prequel, The "Little Mac Book" by the same authors, but after examining it I decided it was a bit too elementary and designed for new computer users or real beginners. This OS X Lion book, on the other hand, assumes you know how to use a mouse, a trackpad, surf the www, click "send" to send an email, select text in a drop down menu, and all the other things that most of us have been doing for many years -- albeit with another OS or an older Mac.
The book starts with the beginning -- the Finder (which as Alice says, "is a very good place to start") -- and uses this key feature as a kind of roadmap to the OS and the Mac as a whole. It then moves on to the apps and other features like security and peripheral devices. Since this is not an elementary book, it requires careful reading to pick up some of the little things that frustrate a Windows user making the transition, but it all seems to be there. I was planning on buying one of those "switching from PC to Mac" books, but at this point I no longer see the need. Old habits make way for the new.
The book is clear without trying to dumb things down. (Not to insult anyone, but "The Little Mac Book" by the same authors has much more elementary approach and is a bit too dumb for me.) I love Lion. It's a neat, friendly, flexible and powerful system. This book makes it work for me.Mac OS X Lion: Peachpit Learning Series OverviewThe latest update of Robin Williams bestselling guide will have you working miracles in no time with Mac OS X Lion. Windows 7 All-in-One For Dummies ReviewI purchased this book even before I received Windows 7. I wanted a "heads up" on what I was geting into. Boy was I pleasantly surprised. Woody Leonhead spells it out and tells you exactly as it is. Even questions you wouldn't think to ask. And, to top that off, he even has put in information that Microsoft wouldn't tell you, e.g., if you download your pictures from either your camera or your memory stick, Windows 7 AUTOMATICALLY deletes your pictures from your camera or memory stick, whichever one you are using. So, photo people, BEWARE and find another way to keep your pictures. I'm sure there is a lot more very interesting items that Woody will let all of us know, only if you are willing to purchase his book. BTW, he used to work at Microsoft and is a now a BETA tester for them. So, you know you are getting all the "ins" and outs" of Windows. I am definitely recommending to everyone that they purchase this book. One of a kind that you will not find in any other book.Windows 7 All-in-One For Dummies Overview
