Ubuntu 8.10 Linux Bible ReviewWithout a doubt the most comprehensive and useful book on Linux I have seen. The printing is a little light and small. But to get the amount of information that's in there in a book that you are able to pick up the small is necessary, but it could be a little darker. Introducing Ubuntu: Desktop Linux ReviewThere is a lot of information here, but 90% of it is the kind of stuff you just figure out from noodling around a bit and paying attention. The author mostly avoids issues that will change with new releases of Ubuntu. When a new version of the operating system comes out every 6 mos, you just can't stay on top of it all. So this turns into a very broad introduction to the most stable aspects of Ubuntu 7.04.
It is very comprehensive hand-holding for those either coming to Linux OSs fresh from a lifetime of Windows and Gates or anyone who is actually new to computing in general.

Linux Bible 2011 Edition: Boot up to Ubuntu, Fedora, KNOPPIX, Debian, openSUSE, and 13 Other Distributions ReviewI'm a beginner Linux user and was looking for a source that would introduce me to Linux as well as would turn me into a confident beginning Linux operator. This book doesn't meet that simple criterion. It is one big puzzle from the start. And even though one might be inclined to say that this is a well though-out approach as to make the reader learn more... I don't think so. I have read many computer books before and it doesn't have to be this way.
Examples of frustrating encounters are chapters in which the author uses concepts that have yet to be introduced. It is confusing as you, as the reader, don't really know whether or not you missed something. But in every case, it turns out that the subject is being discussed further down the road. This made me then skip some chapters and start reading the "Running Commands From The Shell" chapter. But even in that chapter, I felt left in the dark as simple concepts as downloading and installing a package was not even described. In fact, you can find that particular topic in chapter one, where a few very narrow examples are given.
I don't know Mr. Negus and haven't read anything prior from him. But I feel he really let me down in starting my initial Linux experience. The reason I feel confident to write this review is that I have purchased another book which really has made the Linux experience a good one. The main difference I see in this book is the lack of focus on a particular distribution. The different chapters (with the exception of Part 3) are all designed to teach you the basics of Linux apart from any flavor. This allows you to learn core skills that can transfer between whatever distribution you might be using at any given time. Part 3 gives a short coverage of each major distribution available on the market. If you're wondering about the pros and cons of each, this section of the book will help you decide where you want to start your specific distribution-specific learning.
Like all Bible titles, this is pretty big (800+ pages). While there's a lot of useful information, I don't know that I'd recommend this to be your *only* Linux book. 200+ pages deal with the distribution information, which leaves considerably less room for core Linux information. The other chapters cover the gamut of Linux software (server, desktop, productivity, internet, games, etc.), so there's not a lot in in-depth coverage on any one particular area. I'd probably position this as a very good entry level book to teach the reader about Linux and help them decide what distribution to pick. From there, I'd pick a book specific to my distribution of choice and continue my learning.

However, their choice of development kit is poor. The Arcom (now EuroTech) kit is $600, rather than the $300 stated in the book. And it took almost 3 weeks for them to respond to a quote request. Fortunately, there are kits available from other vendors (BiPom, Olimex, etc.) which can be substituted for less than $300. UNIX and Linux Forensic Analysis DVD Toolkit ReviewThe title may mislead readers to believe that this book discusses actual forensics of Unix and Linux systems. It does not. The authors waste precious pages in this short book discussing their favorite cool Linux apps like Nessus and Metasploit but don't have any meaningful discussion about the various flavors of Unix: AIX, Solaris, *BSD, etc. Their "Unix and Linux" forensic book is almost entirely about Linux. There is no thoughtful discussion about filesystem forensics; no technical detail helpful to Forensic Examiners.
The few moments where the authors approach a meaningful forensic topic, the reader is redirected to an online resource rather than provided an analysis or explanation within the book.
The book title may lead readers to believe that an accompanying DVD contains a Unix forensic toolkit of some kind. In fact, there is only 1.8 MB of documents and no tools save for a few (4) short Bash scripts that hardly cover a thorough forensics examination: live or otherwise. One of the scripts is only one line. One of these documents is an incomplete 3.5 page summary of Sleuthkit tools. By "incomplete" I mean that it is apparent that the author decided to quit writing. Apparently there was no room in this 236 page, 14-gauge font book to cover in any detail the different Unix filesystems, data acquisition, data carving or static filesystem analysis. But the authors make plenty of room to discuss scanning with Unix tools (nmap, nessus, etc.).
There is a section entitled "Malware" except that no malware sample is actually examined. The reader is briefly introduced to Panda's AV scanner and is walked through how to use ClamAV as if that is the only AV scanner available for either a Unix user or Forensic Examiner. Forensic Examiners should pay very close attention to AntiVirus product comparative reviews.
The book cover boasts that this is the "only digital forensic analysis book for *nix". Indeed there may be little in the way of books solely dedicated to Unix forensics but other books cover Unix forensics with greater detail than this one. For example, Brian Carrier's "Filesystem Forensic Analysis" or Jones, Bejtlich and Rose's "Real Digital Forensics".
The book cover also boasts that readers can "Hit the ground running" with the information within. Unfortunately, if readers expect the content to help them bridge a gap between Windows and Unix, they will hit the ground with a resounding thud. If any Forensics Examiner finds value in the content of this book for actual Unix forensic investigations, I would question that examiner's experience and training.
If the authors wanted to write a book about cool Linux tools or network scanning, they should have entitled the book differently. Perhaps "A Beginner's Guide to Using Linux and Linux Security Applications".
I felt the title was misleading and false advertising. The authors take advantage of the word "Forensics" to sell a book that is not about forensics. For $53.95 I expected much more and was extremely disappointed and disgusted at the inferiority of the content.UNIX and Linux Forensic Analysis DVD Toolkit OverviewThis book addresses topics in the area of forensic analysis of systems running on variants of the UNIX operating system, which is the choice of hackers for their attack platforms. According to a 2007 IDC report, UNIX servers account for the second-largest segment of spending (behind Windows) in the worldwide server market with $4.2 billion in 2Q07, representing 31.7% of corporate server spending. UNIX systems have not been analyzed to any significant depth largely due to a lack of understanding on the part of the investigator, an understanding and knowledge base that has been achieved by the attacker. The companion DVD provides a simulated or "live" UNIX environment where readers can test the skills they've learned in the book and use custom tools developed by the authors.The book begins with a chapter to describe why and how the book was written, and for whom, and then immediately begins addressing the issues of live response (volatile) data collection and analysis.The book continues by addressing issues of collecting and analyzing the contents of physical memory (i.e., RAM).The following chapters address /proc analysis, revealing the wealth of significant evidence, and analysis of files created by or on UNIX systems.Then the book addresses the underground world of UNIX hacking and reveals methods and techniques used by hackers, malware coders, and anti-forensic developers.The book then illustrates to the investigator how to analyze these files and extract the information they need to perform a comprehensive forensic analysis.The final chapter includes a detailed discussion of Loadable Kernel Modules and Malware. The companion DVD provides a simulated or "live" UNIX environment where readers can test the skills they've learned in the book and use custom tools developed by the authors.Throughout the book the author provides a wealth of unique information, providing tools, techniques and information that won't be found anywhere else.Not only are the tools provided, but the author also provides sample files so that after completing a detailed walk-through, the reader can immediately practice the new-found skills.* The companion DVD for the book contains significant, unique materials (movies, spreadsheet, code, etc.) not available any place else.* This book contains information about UNIX forensic analysis that is not available anywhere else. Much of the information is a result of the author's own unique research and work.* The authors have the combined experience of Law Enforcement, Military, and Corporate forensics. This unique perspective makes this book attractive to ALL forensic investigators.

Unlocking Android: A Developer's Guide ReviewThis is a must have book for anybody doing Android development. It is definitely targeted at developers who are new to Android -- which describes most Android developers out there given what a new platform it is. However, the level of depth on many topics and the clarity provided behind many key concepts in Android are so well done that this book will benefit anyone working on Android applications.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section is called "What is Android? -- The Big Picture." I have to admit, I thought this might be fluff, but it is definitely not. The overview is good, but what the real value is the explanation on getting your development environment setup. This is something that many books fail to mention at all, as it can be a tricky topic to illustrate in a book. It is well done here, and can definitely be a big time save for new developers. More of this kind of "how to" material is also presented in the appendices.
The second part is called "Exercising the Android SDK" and is the real meat of the book. It takes a very practical, top-down approach to Android application development. It starts off by explaining UI concepts, then intents and services. It then dives into excellent detail on some of the key aspects of mobile application development: working with data, using the Internet, telephony, notifications, graphics, multimedia, and GPS. I would recommend that you immediately read the chapters 3-6 (UI, intents, services, data management, Internet) as these are really the building blocks of any mobile app that is not a game. The other chapters are great too, but you can probably read them as needed. Maybe you don't need GPS today, but need it three months from now. Just read chapter 11 at that time, and you will have no problem. The chapters are self-contained enough for this, while there is still a nice flow of thought between them as well.
The last part of the book is called "Android Applications." It starts off with a very nice example of creating a very "full" application. It really drives in all of the previous material, and is a veritable cookbook of sample code. There are a lot of clever little things you might want to do in your application that you can find an easy to follow sample of in this chapter. I found myself thinking "oh I'm going to rip this off and re-do some part of an existing app." The last chapter is title "Hacking Android" and is all about writing an application in C to run "closer to the metal" on Android. This is probably not that useful to most developers, but I imagine it would be invaluable if you actually did need to do something like this. If nothing else, it is a good read and reveals fascinating aspects of Android's internals. It certainly demonstrates the technical mastery of the authors.Unlocking Android: A Developer's Guide Overview

VoIP Hacks: Tips & Tools for Internet Telephony ReviewI've been in telephony and networking for nearly 30 years. Started in R&D at a PBX manufacturer in 1979, then did a stretch with the, at that time, worlds largest Ethernet company. Then I worked on a Fiber Optic Voice and Data MAN (IEEE 802.6) and have been manufacturing telecom products for the past 14 years. I think that gives me the qualifications to critique this book even without having to mention the Ethernet board I designed for IBM was featured on the cover of PC Week Magazine in 1987.
This is a very good book. If you are a VoIP systems integrator or do anything with Asterisk, this book is a must have. There are major problems with the current state of the VoIP industry. The two biggest problems are security and the unavailability of a decent broadband connection with QoS and an SLA below $400 per MegaBit. Yes $400, but we're talking guaranteed availability and less than 0.5% packet loss,and 50mS or less latency with real penalties for not meeting the SLA.
Before reading this book I would not have considered putting an IP-PBX on an ADSL link. The author's idea of putting a Sangoma ADLS modem in the Linux box with PPPoE client software and controlling the modem queue is nothing short of genius. Then to top it off with the AstShape QoS scripts and the QoS monitoring tools, this book is an absolute bargain. With these tools I'll not only know if the ADSL connection is capable of supporting VoIP service, but I'll know exactly why. Much better than cutting over to the VoIP system and later discovering the problems. The whole book is just full of great ideas. There is something in this book for everybody from the Skype user to a single VoIP phone owner, Asterisk, or enterprise PBX administrators. Just check out the Table of Contents. While the book is an asset for seasoned VoIP integrators, it is also a very good resource for someone completely unfamiliar with VoIP with a desire to learn. You can start out with free software for a Windows PC, progress to purchasing a single VoIP phone, then to a Linux PC. Greasemonkey Hacks: Tips & Tools for Remixing the Web with Firefox ReviewGreasemonkey (GM) is an extension (arguably one of the most useful) for the Firefox browser. GM is an agent that allows the dynamic alteration and manipulation of web pages via scripts which run after the page is loaded but before it is rendered to you. GM opens the Document Object Model (DOM) of other people's web pages up to client-side access, which gives you the power to add, remove and change the content of that web page to suit your tastes and needs - almost exactly if you had written the web page yourself. GM, however, is only the hosting engine. All the real work is performed by implementing JavaScript files, that you or someone else has written.
Greasemonkey Hacks is a great read and a valuable "ideas" asset, but only if you fit into the niche it is written for. As GM is nothing more than an interface host for dynamic scripting, not a lot other than an overview of the extension, where to get it, and a how to use its few dialogs can be written about. Indeed, it already has been covered before and is freely available on the extension's home page (Greasemonkey dot Mozdev dot Org). As GM makes the DOM available to custom JavaScripts, unless you only intend to look for and run other peoples scripts (which is quite doable as UserScripts dot Org makes hundreds of thousands of them readily available, some of which appear in this book), a working knowledge of the DOM and JavaScript is needed. The author does not spend much time covering what GM is, and very little time covering any JavaScripting or DOM objects; you are expected to already understand what you see. What this title does give you is hundreds of pages of ideas, accomplished by presenting recipe script after recipe script complete with discussions and explanations.
The book is well written, and entertaining to read. The information presented within ranges from novice to advanced (if you're into scripting) and is never dumbed down or made overly complicated. If you're really interested in writing your own web browsing "hacks", this is an excellent read as it provides a great guided introduction into the topic, beyond what you would get if you just threw yourself into the GM-related websites. If you find the possibilities tantalizing, you won't be sorry you purchased this book.
