Internet Research - Illustrated (Illustrated (Thompson Learning)) ReviewThe book is very low on information.
If you've used a computer for at least 2 years this will teach you absolutely nothing.
$20 for a paperback book that is thinner than a quarter.
Bought this for a class,

The Web Library: Building a World Class Personal Library with Free Web Resources ReviewGlancing at the title I thought it was just another list of websites, and although many sites are listed, most of them aren't the common knowledge everyday sites that librarians and general web surfers already know about. What makes the book quite a bit different is that the author includes quite a few interviews with people from the websites that are mentioned -- people from Project Gutenberg, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution, etc. The author also uses several methods to judge site longevity (i.e., will the site be around in the future), plus there's a website he manages to keep track of changes. With Open Access becoming a trend, this book is the most credible to date. The Web Library: Building a World Class Personal Library with Free Web Resources OverviewDescribes how to create a digital library of documents, images, articles, indexes, and other free resources found on the World Wide Web.

The Naked Corporation: How the Age of Transparency Will Revolutionize Business ReviewThis is a very good book which has opened my eyes into looking for companies that are honest and transparent with their customers, shareholders and employees. This book calls companies to stop hidding behind secrets that destroy corporations (Enron and others) and start being transparent, by providing informaiton to your customers, shareholders and employees. Companies need to show that they are responsible to the environment, to their stakeholders and other corporations. This book is calling companies to be ethical in their daily transactions and gives example after example of corporations who have fallen because they tried to hide the truth. This book shows that we need strong ethical people to run todays corporations and we as investors need to reward companies who are starting to become transparent. At the same time we need to punish companies who are not taking responsibility for their actions and wrong doings. This book also points out that most investors are blind with their investments and don't even realize what their largest investment is invested in (for most people their largest investment is their pension plan, and I admit I don't know what mine is invested in). This is a very good book and has opened my eyes to at least see what's going on out there and provided me with the tools to do some research and make sure I reward companies that are making an effort to save our environment and be honest with employee's, investors, stakeholders, and customers. The one question I have is are we raising a generation that will be able to have the
qualities needed to run the corporations of tomorrow... Great book...The Naked Corporation: How the Age of Transparency Will Revolutionize Business Overview

The Invisible Web: Uncovering Information Sources Search Engines Can't See ReviewI retired five years ago after thirty years in a very large public library system, and recently found it necessary to return to the trenches for awhile, in a rather smaller system. In that half-decade, of course, the Internet changed drastically and, even though I'm constantly online and intimately familiar with the major search engines (and many of the minor ones), there was a large number of new reference information sources with which I was not at all familiar. So I went looking for professional tools to remedy my ignorance. This is the first book I've seen in the publisher's "CyberAge" series, and medthodologically, it's quite good. As others have noted, the static nature of print-on-paper means rapidly outdated material, but Sherman and Price show you how to attack the problem, so, even though I came across several (unfortunately) extinct databases, I was able to locate several new ones, too. This is a terrific instructional work for reference librarians, and the accompanying web site is near the top of my bookmarks at work. The Invisible Web: Uncovering Information Sources Search Engines Can't See OverviewEnormous expanses of the Internet are unreachable with standard web search engines. This book provides the key to finding these hidden resources by identifying how to uncover and use invisible web resources. Mapping the invisible Web, when and how to use it, assessing the validity of the information, and the future of Web searching are topics covered in detail. Only 16 percent of Net-based information can be located using a general search engine. The other 84 percent is what is referred to as the invisible Web-made up of information stored in databases. Unlike pages on the visible Web, information in databases is generally inaccessible to the software spiders and crawlers that compile search engine indexes. As Web technology improves, more and more information is being stored in databases that feed into dynamically generated Web pages. The tips provided in this resource will ensure that those databases are exposed and Net-based research will be conducted in the most thorough and effective manner.

Open Source Web Applications for Libraries ReviewOpen Source Web Applications for Libraries addresses issues of accessibility, support, and dependability and covers a range of applications that can be used to improve library reference services for library users. Librarians receive a fine guide to choosing, installing and configuring popular open source web programs form Joomla to WordPress and more, and also receive a fine critical cross-comparison between applications and features. Any library manager needs this!
Open Source Web Applications for Libraries Overview
Interest in open source software has never been stronger, yet a general lack of information about specific tools and benefits along with nagging concerns about dependability and support has hampered adoption in libraries. In Open Source Web Applications for Libraries, authors Coombs and Hollister address these issues and provide librarians with guidance on a range of applications that can be used to improve reference services, instruction, and outreach to library users.

In addition to explaining the use, installation, and configuration of such popular resources as WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, and MediaWiki, the authors cover library-specific open source applications such as SubjectsPlus, Blacklight, VuFind, and SOPAC. They compare and contrast the applications, describing key features, strengths, and weaknesses in order to help librarians make informed decisions. Numerous real-world examples illustrate how different types of libraries are using open source web applications today.

Find It Online: The Complete Guide to Online Research ReviewThis book deserves more than 5 stars for making the Internet fully accessible to anyone for a minimum of cost in time and money.
If you have enough skill to turn on your computer and get onto the Internet, this book will take you where you want to go in the fastest, least frustrating way. Within hours, you will be more efficient and effective than people who have done online research for years, but have not yet read this book.
Although Web addresses and sites will change, the best basic methods of how to do research online will shift much less often. You should be able to apply what you learn from this book for some time to come.
Some of the many helpful things you will learn include:
(1) which search engines work best for which kinds of questions
(2) how to get the fewest possible sites from a search with the greatest likelihood that they will be helpful to you
(3) which sources of information to go to directly without a search first
(4) how to assess the credibility of a source
(5) how to get things for free that most people pay for
(6) when to spend money to save time
(7) how to manage your e-mail to spend less time on it.
You will also benefit from three sample search models in chapter 12, one for finding a person, another for doing a business profile, and a third for problem solving. Most of your searches will involve one of these three search types.
An area you may not think about now is what people can learn about you while you do your research. The sections on privacy issues and how you can protect yourself are outstanding.
About a third of the book is devoted to indexes to make it easier for you to find government public records and the right Web site for your research needs.
Even though I have been doing online research for many years, I plan to keep this book next to my computer from now on. If you read many of my reviews, you will notice that that is something I rarely say about a book.
After you have finished learning how to do better and faster online research with this wonderful resource, I suggest that you step back and think about new questions that you should be asking now that you have improved access to good and timely information. For example, should you be doing more to check out investments? Or should you be learning more about becoming a better parent? Or spouse? Asking and answering those questions will probably be the biggest payoff you can get from this very helpful guide.
Be rich in knowledge and turn it into wisdom!

Start Your Own Information Marketing Business (Start Your Own Information Marketing Business: Your Step-By-Step) ReviewI liked the title, I am interested in the topic, so I bought the book. Five chapters in I am still looking for the 100 years of experience touted in the introduction.
Chapter 1 is a pep talk for what is not to follow. I guess you have to start somewhere.
Chapter 2 is a lawyers review of business structures that can be found in any introductory business text or online for free. I thought it ironic that a line was included about being sued for a customer tripping in front of the business. Hey Guys! This is an E-business! Customers don't trip over things in cyberspace. It would be nice if things like: where exactly a cyber-company is located, or choosing the best tax structure for a cyber-company, were covered. They are not, so don't bother looking.
Chapter 3 launches right into raising money for the new company. One of the chief attractions of this venue for me was the low entry barriers and relative ease with which a company could be launched on a shoestring. Instead we waste an entire chapter telling you what you already know about raising money.
Chapter 4 starts to get to the meat of the book, strategies for creating products. Telephone interviews, personal experience, etc. The actual selection of a topic, though critical, seems to be overlooked. Perhaps I should say, how to choose an optimal topic is ignored. It is assumed you will find some topic to pursue. Some discussion of keywords, amazon research, etc. would have been nice, but don't look for it here. Instead, if you happen to stumble over a winning topic, this chapter will tell you all the wonderful spin-offs you can make with it.
I am seriously considering putting the book on the shelf at this point. So far it has been a waste of time and trees. Perhaps I will write my own....
Just my opinion,

Data Driven: Profiting from Your Most Important Business Asset ReviewIn contrast to several recent books on the importance of managing with data analytics, Data Driven starts with the IT infrastructure required to maintain consistent data, then focuses on data quality from the executive perspective of the hidden costs of poor data, and finally, explores how to make better decisions through proper data management.
A nice twist is a chapter on content providers who bring packaged data to the marketplace. This is a growing segment that is applicable to every business, since every business collects data that has value to companies in its ecosystem.
There is a chapter on Social Issues, which is great in intent but weak in content. Sad...
The book ends with "what to do over the next one hundred days" advice. If managers are serious about treating data as a business asset, then this chapter lays out the essentials of what to do.
I recommend this book for business executives to orient their thinking about data as a business asset and to realize what tangible actions must be done to make that a reality in their companies. I know that these are old old themes for the IT profession. However, these fundamental themes are oldies but goodies!Data Driven: Profiting from Your Most Important Business Asset Overview

Programming Collective Intelligence: Building Smart Web 2.0 Applications ReviewThis book is probably best for those of you who have read the theory, but are not quite sure how to turn that theory into something useful. Or for those who simply hunger for a survey of how machine learning can be applied to the web, and need a non-mathematical introduction.
My area of strength happens to be neural networks (my MS thesis topic was in the subject), so I will focus on that. In a few pages of the book, the author describes how the most popular of all neural networks, backpropagation, can be used to map a set of search terms to a URL. One might do this, for example, to try and find the page best matching the search terms. Instead of doing what nearly all other authors will do, prove the math behind the backprop training algorithm, he instead mentions what it does, and goes on to present python code that implements the stated goal.
The upside of the approach is clear -- if you know the theory of neural networks, and are not sure how to apply it (or want to see an example of how it can be applied), then this book is great for that. His example of adaptively training a backprop net using only a subset of the nodes in the network was interesting, and I learned from it. Given all the reading I have done over the years on the subject, that was a bit of a surprise for me.
However, don't take this book as being the "end all, be all" for understanding neural networks and their applications. If you need that, you will want to augment this book with writings that cover some of the other network architectures (SOM, hopfield, etc) that are out there. The same goes for the other topics that it covers.
In the end, this book is a great introduction to what is available for those new to machine learning, and shows better than any other book how it applies to Web 2.0. Major strengths of this book are its broad coverage, and the practicality of its contents. It is a great book for those who are struggling with the theory, and/or those who need to see an example of how the theory can be applied in a concise, practical way.
To the author: I expect this book will get a second edition, as the premise behind the book is such a good one. If that happens, perhaps beef up the equations a bit in the appendix, and cite some references or a bibliography for those readers interested in some more in depth reading about the theory behind all these wonderful techniques. (The lack of a bibliography is why I gave it 4 stars out of 5, I really think that those who are new to the subject would benefit greatly from knowing what sits on your bookshelf.)Programming Collective Intelligence: Building Smart Web 2.0 Applications OverviewWant to tap the power behind search rankings, product recommendations, social bookmarking, and online matchmaking? This fascinating book demonstrates how you can build Web 2.0 applications to mine the enormous amount of data created by people on the Internet. With the sophisticated algorithms in this book, you can write smart programs to access interesting datasets from other web sites, collect data from users of your own applications, and analyze and understand the data once you've found it. Programming Collective Intelligence takes you into the world of machine learning and statistics, and explains how to draw conclusions about user experience, marketing, personal tastes, and human behavior in general--all from information that you and others collect every day. Each algorithm is described clearly and concisely with code that can immediately be used on your web site, blog, Wiki, or specialized application. This book explains:
Collaborative filtering techniques that enable online retailers to recommend products or media
Methods of clustering to detect groups of similar items in a large dataset
Search engine features--crawlers, indexers, query engines, and the PageRank algorithm
Optimization algorithms that search millions of possible solutions to a problem and choose the best one
Bayesian filtering, used in spam filters for classifying documents based on word types and other features
Using decision trees not only to make predictions, but to model the way decisions are made
Predicting numerical values rather than classifications to build price models
Support vector machines to match people in online dating sites
Non-negative matrix factorization to find the independent features in adataset
Evolving intelligence for problem solving--how a computer develops its skill by improving its own code the more it plays a game
Each chapter includes exercises for extending the algorithms to make them more powerful. Go beyond simple database-backed applications and put the wealth of Internet data to work for you. "Bravo! I cannot think of a better way for a developer to first learn these algorithms and methods, nor can I think of a better way for me (an old AI dog) to reinvigorate my knowledge of the details." -- Dan Russell, Google "Toby's book does a great job of breaking down the complex subject matter of machine-learning algorithms into practical, easy-to-understand examples that can be directly applied to analysis of social interaction across the Web today. If I had this book two years ago, it would have saved precious time going down some fruitless paths." -- Tim Wolters, CTO, Collective Intellect

The Social Media Bible: Tactics, Tools, and Strategies for Business Success ReviewThere are a few things this book is not:
It is not a "Bible" of social media in spite of its size.
The "Tools" section as mentioned by others has no "How to do it or get it done."
And most embarrassing: The book was just published last year but sites with detailed information about how "My Space" is the leading social media site with 185M members. Facebook achieved over 500M members in 2010.
This book gives a global view of social media but don't depend on the facts in the book.
In order to get up and running with social media applications I would suggest Catherine Parkers: 301 Ways to Use Social Media To Boost Your Marketing.

Building Research Tools with Google For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) ReviewI'm a webmaster, and I use Google everyday - both in connection with my sites, and also to research all kinds of things. This book will have you building research tools that extend Google. But more important, it will you teach about how to research, what is Google and what is not, how Google works, how to evaluate the credibility of what you find, and much more. If you teach someone to fish, you feed them for life. This book will help you research for life. It's the best book about Google I've read, and believe me I've read a few. If Google touches your life, get this book.Building Research Tools with Google For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) OverviewGoogle—a funny name for a fabulous tool. You've already used it to look up all sorts of information on the Web almost instantly. Now what if you could use its amazing abilities to turbo-charge your research on a grand scale?
Building Research Tools With Google For Dummies can help you do just that. In plain English, it shows you easy ways to:
Ask Google exactly what you want to know
Determine whether what you need can actually be found through Google, and where to look if the answer is "no"
Improve your research results
Present your findings in a way that makes sense
Write your own specialized search applications—if you want to

To get the most from Google, you need to understand Google. Building Research Tools With Google For Dummies explains how Google works and how you can build more effective queries (hint: it's a lot more than just using the "Advanced Search" techniques!) It even shows you how to think like a researcher and how to package the results of your research so it means something to your audience. You'll be able to:
Understand Google research techniques and use the custom search-related syntax
Recognize Google's strengths—and limitations
Target your search by using Google operators
Use Google to research photos, or even an entire industry
Improve the effectiveness of your results by understanding Google's comparative methodology
Build custom tools using WDSL and Web Services

You don't have to become a programmer to use Google, but if you know a little about software development and want to explore new, more focused search techniques, Building Research Tools With Google For Dummies has a section just for you. It introduces you to the Google API, shows you how to download a developer key, and leads you through building a C# .Net Google application. On the companion Web site, you'll find the source code and software discussed in the book as well as links to lots of other resources for researchers. Before you know it, you'll be Googling your way to research success!
