Starting an Online Business All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback)) ReviewThis book was a real surprise. I fully expected to use it as a resource for new Ebay/Web commerce users that we help teach but found it excelled not only in the basics but in pretty much the whole plan of where you would want to be online in the long run. I am particulary fond of books that discuss legal and accounting set up and this one covers a lot of good info like type of organization, record keeping, copyrights and trademarks, a tax overview etc. A great foundation for the new online business. There is a lot of information regarding web site design, internet security and boosting your sales. Usually many books would leave off in this area but not this one. It has information on taking your retail business online , selling from a storefront and covers some important ideas like affiliate marketing and finding a niche. Whether deciding to operate on Ebay or with your own website this book is jam packed with information. Even as an experienced online user I found myself making notes from many of the sections in the book including those with suggestions on what to do to expand sales, deal with changes and other customer issues. Just as a note this is one huge book. Over 800 pages including the index and for the price a bargain. For Ebayers I would recommend this book and a general Ebay book as a package to buy. If working directly on your own e-commerce site I would recommend this book with with a web 2.0 or social marketing book.Starting an Online Business All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback)) Overview

The book is not about running a general purpose website that is selling things. It pertains to those sites using the osCommerce software. This provides a programmatic framework with features needed by many small commercial websites.
But it turns out that several key sections of the book do offer advice germane to anyone wanting to sell on the web. One topic is whether you should join various organisations that will certify your website as reputable. Truste, BBBonline, VeriSign, GeoTrust and others are mentioned. These let you put a seal (a clickable image) on your webpages. So that if a reader clicks on it, it will go to that organisation's server and popup a page attesting that your website is an accredited member. The book's coverage of the top companies offering such certifications is good. Another topic well covered is how to provide search results from searches done within your database of products. Here, osCommerce naturally comes with an internal search option.
Search Engine Optimisation is another topic extensively discussed. This is where you try to get your webpages listed as prominently as possible in the (free) results of major search engines. Tips are given, including how to avoid getting blacklisted by the search engines for being an SEO spammer. (Naughty, naughty!)
Unfortunately, a failing of the book is a poorly done index. For example, on the subject of certificates, SSL, seals or any of those certifying organisations, there simply are no entries in the index. Another example is the omission of link farms or spam from the index, even though these are discussed in the text.osCommerce Webmaster's Guide to Selling Online: Increase your sales and profits with expert tips on SEO, Marketing, Design, Selling Strategies, etc. OverviewPractical techniques and proven strategies to increase online sales: learn from an expert! This book is for anyone administering a small/medium sized osCommerce site. This book is for anyone administering an osCommerce site, including webmasters, content managers, store owners, and marketing managers, who do not need to understand PHP or MySQL to benefit from this book. The tips and techniques described in this book can be applied to any small, medium sized e-commerce site. This is not an implementation guide; developers implementing osCommerce-based e-commerce sites would benefit from reading Deep Inside osCommerce: The Cookbook.

Internet Marketing For Free: The Guide: Internet Marketing To Go Review
This book was OK. It had the potential to be a great little book on Internet marketing. However, I just had too much trouble digesting it. I did not see any reason to split the content into three parts, 21 chapters, and an appendix. And there were typos - more than just a few. On top of that, I found the book to be incredibly wordy. And the journalistic style of writing is adequate for newspaper articles, but not for something sold as a book. There were many one-sentence paragraphs throughout. And the page formatting left me thinking I was reading a text file that had been converted to PDF.
If the author had organized the book into eight chapters as follows, and done a nice job of developing a theme in each chapter, then I suspect the book would deserve at least a 4-star rating.
1. Search Engine Optimization
2. Article writing & submission
3. Blogging
4. Posting on online directories
5. Posting press releases on PR directory sites
6. Posting on free classifieds sites
7. Social networking & forums
8. Affiliate programs & Joint ventures
Unfortunately, the book is not so neatly organized. And there are numerous "bonuses" refered to in the book. When I buy a book I expect everything in it to be something I paid for. I don't need to be told I am getting a bonus here and a bonus there.
I was able to get through parts 1 and 2 of the book before I started just skimming the text. There really is a lot of good content in this little ebook masquarading as a POD special. The author qualifies as an infopreneur and she speaks from real world experience in much of what she talks about here. There are a ton of URLs that any infopreneur would probably like to get their hands on. Whether they will be good links in a year or two I don't know. But the raw content in this little tome saves it for me. Drupal E-commerce with Ubercart 2.x ReviewAt first glance at the title of this book, you might be tempted to think that it is not too much more than a reference guide to the complex Ubercart module. Surprisingly, you're only half right. While the authors, George Papadongonas and Yiannis Doxaras, do a great job of covering almost all aspects of the modules that ship with Ubercart, they also go way beyond that. It turns out this book is actually a pretty good guide for not only configuring your Drupal-powered ecommerce site, but also quite valuable in the planning, promoting, and tracking phases as well.
As you'd expect, the authors do a nice job covering the many modules that need to be enabled and configured for a basic Ubercart site. In many cases they go screen-by-screen in the configuration - something that isn't easy to make very engaging. They cover Ubercart's conditional actions functionality quite nicely and how it can be used to configure tax and shopping modules. They also cover product classes and product kits - two very powerful features of Ubercart that every site admin should leverage.
Where the book really shines though is in the descriptions of all the various topics (mainly other modules) in the Ubercart universe. They wisely provide information about popular supporting modules that many ecommerce sites lack, including wish lists, product recommendations, and coupon codes. It is effective use of modules like these that really make ecommerce sites useful.
Overall, this book is a nice surprise. At well over 350 pages, it is beefier than most Drupal books, and provides a wealth of practical information that most Ubercart-powered sites will benefit from.Drupal E-commerce with Ubercart 2.x OverviewThis book will take you through the basics, like Drupal and Ubercart installation and common settings, and as we proceed through the chapters, we'll implement more advanced techniques. Start Your Own Information Marketing Business (Start Your Own Information Marketing Business: Your Step-By-Step) ReviewI liked the title, I am interested in the topic, so I bought the book. Five chapters in I am still looking for the 100 years of experience touted in the introduction.
Chapter 1 is a pep talk for what is not to follow. I guess you have to start somewhere.
Chapter 2 is a lawyers review of business structures that can be found in any introductory business text or online for free. I thought it ironic that a line was included about being sued for a customer tripping in front of the business. Hey Guys! This is an E-business! Customers don't trip over things in cyberspace. It would be nice if things like: where exactly a cyber-company is located, or choosing the best tax structure for a cyber-company, were covered. They are not, so don't bother looking.
Chapter 3 launches right into raising money for the new company. One of the chief attractions of this venue for me was the low entry barriers and relative ease with which a company could be launched on a shoestring. Instead we waste an entire chapter telling you what you already know about raising money.
Chapter 4 starts to get to the meat of the book, strategies for creating products. Telephone interviews, personal experience, etc. The actual selection of a topic, though critical, seems to be overlooked. Perhaps I should say, how to choose an optimal topic is ignored. It is assumed you will find some topic to pursue. Some discussion of keywords, amazon research, etc. would have been nice, but don't look for it here. Instead, if you happen to stumble over a winning topic, this chapter will tell you all the wonderful spin-offs you can make with it.
I am seriously considering putting the book on the shelf at this point. So far it has been a waste of time and trees. Perhaps I will write my own....

eBoot Camp: Proven Internet Marketing Techniques to Grow Your Business ReviewI have developed several hundred websites over the last decade, optimized them for Google, and have literally made millions for my clients. So while most web marketing books may not present me with new techniques, I have still given five-star reviews to those that I think others would find useful.
Not only is this book a weak primer with plenty of page filler, but Perlman's suggestions can actually hurt your marketing results. Chapter 4 is dedicated to your keywords meta tag, yet Perlman doesn't realize nor does he mention that Google's algorithms have completely ignored the keywords tag for years. When discussing title tags, he makes no mention of easy mistakes that will get websites penalized or even blacklisted from Google. Perlman encourages reciprocal link exchanges with other webmasters (with no mention of anchor text), but never explains that some links can be worthless, and others can get you banned from Google.
The only effective marketing angles that Perlman barely scratches the surface on are writing articles, press releases, and blogging. I can point out several books for the same amount of money that contain ten times as much useful information for newbies and designers alike, such as Web Marketing All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies, and Web Copy That Sells.
I bought this book (Amazon verified) because there were almost 50 glowing reviews. What I failed to notice was that 90% of the reviewers have written only one review. Most of them refer to the author by his first name, and suggest that they've been to his seminars. The testimonials in his book are from other authors, and not a single one of them are web developers or online marketing experts. Perlman himself seems to have no background in web design or internet marketing (there's zero mention of either on his sites or in his book).
Countless other web marketing books will help you more in the long run, and will actually tell you how not to get banned from Google. I'm not even upset that I bought it, I'm upset that so many people new to web marketing will buy it, and do a major disservice to promoting their business.eBoot Camp: Proven Internet Marketing Techniques to Grow Your Business OverviewIn this Web 2.0 era, small business owners are at a severe disadvantage because they have minimal, if any, knowledge, about Internet marketing. They also lack the budget to hire a top-notch web marketer. The authors are throwing so much information into each chapter that it is overwhelming and hard to absorb. I also feel that it does not follow a logical path, meaning that they reference other chapters and concepts not yet touched on almost constantly. Very often the other chapters referenced come later in the book so you haven't read them yet if you are going page/chapter order. I would not recommend this book for a student of e-marketing. How to Make Your Own Free Website: And Your Free Blog Too ReviewI bought Mr. Matthews' ebook on marketing and selling ebooks at the same time I purchased this one. While that one focuses a lot on marketing and selling (duh, right?), this has more in the way of setting up free websites and blogs with little to no knowledge of HTML.
As I just recently self pubbed my first short novel/novella, I wanted to see what I could do setting up a website for little to no money. (I'm the stereotypical cash-strapped writer, lol.) The website I was contemplating setting up was an all modular, drag and drop-type of set up, but I felt the cost on a monthly basis just doesn't work at this point in time.
So I got this book. And it pointed me in directions I never thought about. It discussed certain things about websites I'd never considered. As I already have a free blog, I didn't pay as much attention to that, but I'll re-read because I figure I can only better my blog with more suggestions. :-)
And his advice on using a Google external tool for a domain name - it was the easiest explanation for using that particular tool that I've ever seen.

Starting a Yahoo Business For Dummies ReviewFirst of all, let me start by saying that I have been using Yahoo Store since 1998, and have run an ecommerce business full time since 1999, when I quit my day job.
I picked up a copy of this book to give to a friend who was starting up a Yahoo Merchant Solutions site to sell online. I figured it would be a good way to give them a reference guide so that they wouldn't have to ask me 10 million questions about how to add a new product, or how to upload a photo, etc.
I bought the book without even looking inside. But I started flipping through it the day before I was going to give the book away. Once I realized how great the book was, I ended up keeping it and buying a different copy for my friend!
This book covers all the basics for people who don't know much about getting started.
But more importantly, it has a ton of really great high level strategies and tactics that even someone like me who has been using Yahoo Store for almost 10 years can use.
In fact, one specific part of the book about the cross selling feature made me realize I was approaching cross selling all wrong.
I spent about two hours making some changes to my Yahoo Store, and the store made an additional $10,387.42 in cross sells in the 90 days following those changes. (Yes, that's a real number. Any Yahoo Store will run a simple report to look it up, and that's what I just did.)
That's just ONE thing I learned from the book. I have a list of 16 other changes that I am starting to implement because of what I learned.
Ideas like optimizing my photos better, creating more buyer guides, improving my About Us page, improving the checkout pages, etc. And I haven't even re-read the book yet.
In summary: This book is not just for beginners! You're going to find good stuff in it even if you're a pro.

All aspects of starting such a business is covered, and after I read the book I could proudly say I knew the how's (as well as what's), and I was on my way starting a business.
But there are two major flaws to this book: first, it's not very readable, and second, it doesn't give you enough hands-on information. There are superfluous step-by-step instructions on how to use FrontPage Express, but the author doesn't tell you much about building store fronts or how to accept credit cards online, two of the more pressing topics for someone wishing to start a e-business.
The CD is a big disappointment. Just a collection of demoware and shareware. Online Marketing Success Stories: Insider Secrets, from the Experts Who Are Making Millions on the Internet Today ReviewLet me preface this review by pointing out that six of the seven reviewers that gave this book five stars have something in common: They only review books from Atlantic Publishing, and each reviewer rates the exact same books five stars each. Take that for what it's worth, now on to my review.
If you're in the market for a book that will inspire you as a business owner, then this is what you're looking for. But if you're expecting a book that will offer real insight on techniques to improve your business, this book will disappoint.
There are two main issues with the success stories contained within this book. The first is that the majority of stories are from the owners of very obscure websites. One Amazon reviewer seems to suggest that the stories read more like ads than anything, and he does seem to have a valid point.
The second major issue is that most the success stories seem to involve sites that generated significant revenue from the late 1990's to about 2002. If the companies mentioned in a 2006 book were so successful, it seems odd that many of those sites are no longer online in 2009. Furthermore, tips on what worked for an e-commerce website back in 2001 aren't particularly useful for an online storefront developed in 2010. This ties in to the fact that the chapter on website development is extremely brief, and would offer no real search engine optimization help even to online marketing newbies.
At an absolute best, you might pick up a handful of useful ideas from some of the stories shared by business owners. Most of their suggestions are vague, and often don't involve techniques that someone can replicate. Rather than try to absorb dozens of different ideas from dozens of site owners, it seems more practical to purchase a book where a single author offers techniques that worked for his or her own clients. How to Make Money Online with eBay, Yahoo, and Google ReviewI was disappointed in this book because it made me believe that it would be about Yahoo! and Google equally with eBay. However, this book was all about eBay with a tiny sprinkling of Yahoo! and Google here and there -- certainly not enough to include Yahoo! and Google in the title of the book. The book has 29 chapters. It doesn't stop talking about eBay until Chapter 21 then resumes its eBay discussion in Chapter 29.
The book should have been called "eBay 101" or "eBay for Not-So-Dumb Dummies." It does have good information for a complete eBay newbie but I would recommend other books for the non-eBay savvy newcomer like Adam Ginsberg's book: How to Buy, Sell, and Profit on eBay or eBay Powerseller Secrets by Debra and Brad Schepp. In fact, those two books I just mentioned alone should be all you need to get started if you want to make money on eBay.
Pass on this book. It's a rip off. The title is not appropriate and designed to deceive people into believing that the book will give you a strong online selling strategy with a successful mix of eBay, Yahoo!, and Google when that isn't the case. The tagline on the cover says "20 ways to Reach More Customers and Build Revenue with Google Business Tools". It's a little bit of a stretch to include Google Apps, a set of online business applications, in this rubric, but author Greg Holden pulls it off convincingly by comparing the utility and cost of Google Apps with its Microsoft counterparts.
Where you might expect simply a rehash of Google's own extensive help files, it is apparent that Holden has put considerable effort into actually learning the various tools that Google makes available.
For example, he adds insights that an unsophisticated user might not pick up on, such as adding Google Talk to your own website to allow direct live interaction with your own customers and prospects. This might be old hat to experienced web marketers, but not to neophytes.
Holden covers a remarkably broad range as do the Google tools he covers. For each of Google's services, Holden provides a detailed description and lots of hints and tips.
Overall, this is a surprisingly informative book. Those not familiar with Google will find it helpful as an introduction to all of Google's services.
