Internet Marketing-Profits That Lie Hidden In Your Website: How To Triple Your Web Sales In 25 Days ReviewThis book is from a guy that makes a living from creating ads that sell. That is his real job. He does it for online and offline clients. So while he goes about his daily business he amasses tons of information that he eventually decided to put into a book to sell. I don't get the idea at all that this is some guy who makes a career out of writing Internet marketing guides. As you go through the material you begin to realize something: The guy really knows what he is talking about. You can tell by the examples in the book that he does this stuff both offline and online.
The book is very, very good for those wanting to learn marketing techniques online. Honestly it's like a textbook. In many respects he pulls back the curtain on marketing tactics. I found it helpful for understanding why marketers write the way they do. From the long sales copy to bold claim headlines to web page layouts. Sure we all know that headlines matter, buyers like long reads, etc. But Lance explains it in a way that makes sense and gets you thinking how to implement the tactics in your own sites and landing pages.
The book is full of examples from email writing to headlines to layouts. There is so much information on how to create the right advertisement. If you are doing PPC ads and landing pages then this book is for you. If you have a website and are trying to sell something then this book is for you. OK, if you are already making $5K a month then it's probably not for you. But if you are just starting out trying to sell things on the Internet or are making a humble sum of cash then I really believe that a book like this will help. I've read quite a few PPC ebooks and none are close to this. I believe it is because Lance is actually a professional sales copy writer for both online and offline clients. And you know, PPC success is really all salescopy.
You know how marketers will say that you need to do "X" to convert more sales? And you sit there wondering why? And you get the sense that the joker has no clue why either, but he says so because that's what "they" say works, or learned it from someone else, or saw an example from another salespage. Well Lance explains the why, for every step of building a salespage. You'll read through the manual and think "ah, that's why I'm told to do that", or "so that's why this is suppose to convert better". Guerrilla Marketing on the Front Lines: 35 World-Class Strategies to Send Your Profits Soaring (Guerilla Marketing Press) ReviewI got this book a few weeks ago. I read it in 30 minutes, which was easy because the type is big and there is a lot of space between the paragraphs and more importantly, there is almost nothing to be learned from this book if you have read any other book on marketing... ever.
So I put it down and went back to Amazon to see if I had misread the ratings the book had. I could not understand why 11 people would give it 5 stars. I shop Amazon specifically because of the rating system and I wanted to know how 11 people could possibly have given this thing more than 2 stars at most. Not only is it sophomoric, it seems nobody cared about its publication either; there are typos and missing words all over. Now here is the interesting part: 10 of the reviewers who gave it 5 stars did so in a 6 day period in Sept 2008 right after the publication date. After that there is a 3 star review from someone who actually addressed the contents of the book and then one more review after that. And if you look closely, only that one 3-star review actually addresses the contents of the book, the others all say almost the same thing - please read them closely - every single one of them could have been written off the book jacket. So what we have here is a book that teaches nothing, that is being promoted in Guerrilla fashion by his friends who all gave it 5 star reviews in the first week the book shipped. Out of curiosity, I quickly looked at what other books the first 3 reviewers had reviewed, and saw that all 3 had only reviewed this one book except that #3 had also given 5 stars to a book by reviewer #1.
If the book was any good I would say who cares, but it is not a 5 star book. The Definitive Twitter Guide: Making Tweets Work for Your Business: 30 Twitter Success Stories From Real Businesses and Non-Profits ReviewI started reading this book and almost immediately started saying things like, "I didn't know that", or "Well, that makes sense, why didn't I think of that?", or even a few versions of "Huh?". The book isn't written over my head, nor is it under my ability. Let me give you a better idea. I'm no genius. I frequently misspell frequently misspelled words. I'm no slouch either. I'm proud of the fact that I essentially taught myself much of what I needed to know in order to pass the tests that helped get me in a classroom. I guess I'm average.

But in being average, I feel that I'm like a lot of people out there. I use Twitter, but probably not to the full potential. I have a blog, but I'm sure I could do more with it. Just like a lot of other people out there. Given that, I feel uniquely qualified to tear into this book and give it a good once-over.
I think this book is essential for those who want to use Twitter for more than telling us what you are making for dinner. When I talk to young people, many want to start some sort of business. That's great, and for those people I suggest finding ways to use Twitter to their best advantage. The Definitive Twitter Guide should be your first stop.
This book is extremely well written, to the point that it could hold my attention long enough for me to read it, start following it, and get up here and write a bunch of words about it. If you are like me, young enough to use Twitter but old enough to be slightly intimidated by the tech, Shannon makes the information accessible.
The PF guy in me wants to leave it at "buy this book", but the teacher in me feels the need to jump in as well. Any of my students will tell you that I rarely give "A's". This is one of those times.

Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business ReviewJerry Zyskowski, Normandy Park, WA. Volunteer counselor to small businesses. My extensive background (18+ years with: [...]) helping small business owners gives me a good understanding of their needs, and this book will certainly be beneficial to them in the effective use of social media to propagate their business.
This is an excellent book for small business people to help them connect with potential customers in a more efficient manner via digital social media. This is not a book about sales, but is focused on connecting the parties leading to future sales.
Robbin first takes us through the social media mix, what's out there for us to use. Describing each and how they might be used to help us connect with customers. She then goes on to identify target audience types that have a need for our products/services. Target audiences are better than target individuals; we get the word out to a larger group. Digital social media is one choice among many to do the job, and it needs to be considered as complementary to our more conventional methods. The idea is for our business to get exposure to potential customers using a mix of tools. Initial exposure is a step toward deeper involvement with customers and eventual sales of our products. That's what Social Persuasion is all about.
The book is heavy reading, and I actually put it down for a week or so when half way through in order to adequately digest what I had read.
To help in your understanding, Robbin takes us through the social persuasion process with the case of an Interior Designer. I found this application to be very useful in relating the text material to a real world situation.
As you read the book, new terms will come up. To help you recollect what the terms mean, Robbin has included a very good Glossary in the back of the book. Since the social media technology is constantly changing, her list of Sources may become dated with time. Hopefully, she will augment these with periodic updates on her website: [...].
I consider Robbin's book an excellent addition to the field of social media application, and it should be a valuable aid to small business owners.

Based on the title of this book, you'd probably assume that this is geared more for the business use of blogs. And in a significant sense, it is. But that's not to say that the serious personal blogger won't learn a number of things here. Gardner does a good job of taking the reader from "what is a blog" through the reasons they can be very important, and finally ends with the things you need to know to keep your blog fresh and inviting. You'd probably figure out many of these rules on your own, but the blogging world can be unforgiving. Make a mistake involving deception, and you may never get your audience back. Have your blog be nothing more than press releases, and no one will show up.
She also does a good job of bridging the theory and the practical. In addition to all the knowledge you need to understand blogging, she also takes you through some potential blogging software choices and shows how you'd use them to set up a blog. Granted, it's not a comprehensive instruction manual on how to install and configure any one blogging package, but the reader will get an idea of what it takes.
I also mentioned it's a good book for the serious personal blogger. I use my blog to share information with various audiences, but it's also a personal marketing tool. Therefore, many of the same "rules of the road" that she covers apply to me. I'm concerned about finding my voice and style, how to attract readers, and knowing whether or not my audience is getting value from my writings. While I've learned much of what she writes about on my own, I'd have come much further much faster if I had this book a couple years ago.
Good stuff, and highly practical. A very good selection to give to your boss if s/he wants to investigate the subject. Get Niche Quick: The Definitive Guide To Marketing Your Business On The Internet ReviewThis is a great, handy book to guide you through the internet jungle and will save you many hours of research. I really wish I had had this book before I set up my website. I ended up learning bits and pieces here and there through different people, and it was very confusing with many unexpected, frustrating twists along the way. This book could have saved me a lot of money and headaches!
The first chapter clears up what exactly niche marketing is, the importance of using key words and following your passion. Chapter 2 goes into detail on how to use Word Tracker (an important tool for finding out which key words are used most). This chapter has pictures to help those of us who are techno-challenged.
This section is loaded with details and examples.
Chapter 3 teaches how to "target the long tail," using longer chains of key words. It also teaches how to check out the competitor web sites in the same niche. Chapter 4 instructs on how to find affiliate programs so that you can make money by promoting items from other web sites, and teaches "netiquette," or proper e-mail behavior towards those you work with. The 5th chapter teaches how to decide upon info products and affiliate products. You are also given a list of some reputable companies you can make your own affiliate plan with, so others will advertise your products and get a percentage of what they sell to their list members.
Chapter 6 gives an in depth process of how to write your own info-product, such as an e-book. In the next chapter you learn basic web design and the author walks you through basic steps such as registering a domain name. Chapter 8 guides you to writing like a pro for online copy, using catchy headlines and subheadings. This is very detailed and includes 17 must-have items in your sales copy.
Chapter 9 is about your online marketing plan, and includes items such as your mission, promotion techniques, and making your website stand out. Chapter 10 tells you how to get the word out about your site. It tells how to make link exchanges work for you, how to contact owners of other sites, and more. Finally, the last chapter gives us many more tips such as writing articles and where to submit them, how to use blogs and RSS feeds, and more.
This book is a very easy read for a book on technology! It is clear, straightforward, is sprinkled with photos throughout, and makes a handy reference book to keep on hand even after you read it.

The book has good information, but it's hidden in between sophomoric humor, euphemism crammed sentences and a self-congratulatory tone. My advice - if you plan on reading this book start at chapter 18 (page 246). eBoot Camp: Proven Internet Marketing Techniques to Grow Your Business ReviewI have developed several hundred websites over the last decade, optimized them for Google, and have literally made millions for my clients. So while most web marketing books may not present me with new techniques, I have still given five-star reviews to those that I think others would find useful.
Not only is this book a weak primer with plenty of page filler, but Perlman's suggestions can actually hurt your marketing results. Chapter 4 is dedicated to your keywords meta tag, yet Perlman doesn't realize nor does he mention that Google's algorithms have completely ignored the keywords tag for years. When discussing title tags, he makes no mention of easy mistakes that will get websites penalized or even blacklisted from Google. Perlman encourages reciprocal link exchanges with other webmasters (with no mention of anchor text), but never explains that some links can be worthless, and others can get you banned from Google.
The only effective marketing angles that Perlman barely scratches the surface on are writing articles, press releases, and blogging. I can point out several books for the same amount of money that contain ten times as much useful information for newbies and designers alike, such as Web Marketing All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies, and Web Copy That Sells.
I bought this book (Amazon verified) because there were almost 50 glowing reviews. What I failed to notice was that 90% of the reviewers have written only one review. Most of them refer to the author by his first name, and suggest that they've been to his seminars. The testimonials in his book are from other authors, and not a single one of them are web developers or online marketing experts. Perlman himself seems to have no background in web design or internet marketing (there's zero mention of either on his sites or in his book).
Countless other web marketing books will help you more in the long run, and will actually tell you how not to get banned from Google. I'm not even upset that I bought it, I'm upset that so many people new to web marketing will buy it, and do a major disservice to promoting their business.eBoot Camp: Proven Internet Marketing Techniques to Grow Your Business OverviewIn this Web 2.0 era, small business owners are at a severe disadvantage because they have minimal, if any, knowledge, about Internet marketing. They also lack the budget to hire a top-notch web marketer. As a result, the thrust of their Internet marketing program is usually a poorly performing website that attracts few visitors. e Boot Camp is the solution to the entrepreneur's Internet marketing problem. This do-it-yourself book provides the know-how that's needed to win business in cyberspace while eliminating the need for a large marketing budget. Understanding Digital Marketing: Marketing Strategies for Engaging the Digital Generation ReviewAgree with others that this book is very well written. Easy to understand and reads quickly, which is notable for a book on a subject that could easily be made a much more complicated and technical conversation. Especially helpful are the 'pledges' at the beginning of each chapter that identify questions up front that the content in the chapter will address. Also helpful are the case examples at the end of each chapter.
From a content perspective, the book explores the main components of digital strategy, and is written in a way that is relevant to any size business, whether it be a large organization or a start-up. Personally, as a brand manager within a larger company, this book added depth to my basic understanding of digital marketing strategy and helped me better understand how it should be integrated into overall marketing strategy and execution.
However, since the digital (and especially social media) landscape has been evolving at such a rapid pace (and since the book was written), it would be great to see updates made to some chapters within the book to make it even more relevant.
Otherwise, this is a great book for those looking for an in-depth introduction to digital marketing principles and strategy, or even for those already familiar with digital marketing in their organization who would like to better understand how what they do fits into an overall digital marketing framework.Understanding Digital Marketing: Marketing Strategies for Engaging the Digital Generation Overview

Social Networking Spaces (Beginning) ReviewThis book is a must for the majority of us who want to be involved in social media, but didn't grow up with peer groups to help us out. The book is written in an engaging, informal style that allows learning without needing to memorize each and every word. Each chapter has a brief intro that tells you specifically what you can hope to gain by going through that chapter. Each ends with a summary Q&A related to the chapter and author's conclusion (brief, usually only 2-4 paragraphs)
For the most part, the chapters/topics are self contained; you can read them in any order or you can go sequentially. Personally, I chose the one topic at a time route, using my learning interests in the field as a guide. At this point, I have read and reread a few of the chapters, and browsed the remaining ones that I have not yet "grown into".
Prior to starting the book, I had signed up for a Twitter account, but not done much of anything with it. However, since I was intrigued by the way some people/organizations were using this service, I decided to start in the Twitter chapters (6 and 7). This book was a major help in getting me started: through it, I learned how to post a profile picture and the basics of Twitter etiquette and how to link to other services I might want to work with, including my existing blog. I also learned about short URLs, a piece of knowledge that in and of itself may be worth the price of this book.
After reading the Twitter chapters, I went back and read through the forwards and Chapter 1. The actionable possibilities put forth in the first chapter are truly mind opening, but you almost need to dabble with some of the media in the rest of the book before it really strikes you. Suggestion: skim through Chapter 1, and come back to it after any time you have done some toe dipping in one of the later sections.
The two chapters on Blogging would be very helpful to the novice, particularly one who had little experience with any type of page set up experience. They take you through step by step how to set up a working blog on Google. At the time I read these chapters, I had started a blog on Wordpress and had already worked through some of the kinks of blog set up. However, some of the suggestions for further development in the Q&A and conclusions helped me to improve my blog.
The LinkedIn chapters were the next I gravitated to, and although I had had a LinkedIn account for several years (which I had perpetuated half heartedly), I learned several things about using LinkedIn and available features that have since helped me make my page more robust and join additional groups.
The Meetup Chapter was also a good refresher for this social media program that also has a real face to face component. Again, I had been a member of Meetup for 4-5 years, had actually been a member of several Meetup groups, yet still found that there were a few tricks about the site I had not previously taken advantage of.
The big test was Facebook. I had contemplated setting up my own Facebook page for awhile, but for a number of reasons, had put this action on hold. While undertaking an Emerging media class, the time now seemed right. Chapter 3 is a great examination of the "nuts and bolts" of Facebook for one who has never attempted this media before. I recommend it thoroughly for all newbies. (In fact, I just went back and viewed it again a few minutes ago, and found another option for messaging that I had not known existed.)
To take a slight detour here, I think that the above hits on one of the highly useful aspects of "Social Networking Spaces", namely that you won't absorb everything you read before you try, but you can always go back and check.
But back to Facebook....there are 3 other chapters on Facebook, and they are particularly useful to those who want to use this resource as more than a place to interact with your friends. If you want to tell your story (or someone else's) or find out if your business can benefit by using Facebook, these chapters are a must view.

I'm not yet ready for Flickr or Youtube (except as a viewer) or Ning or Virtual Worlds or some of the other topics covered by the author, but I'm sure that when I am ready, this book will be a great starting point.
Social Networking Spaces (Beginning) OverviewFacebook and Twitter are extremely popular tools for both personal communications and business use, and LinkedIn is fast becoming a requirement for business networking. This book not only explains how to use each of these tools, it also shows you how to integrate them and stay safe and secure while using them. It also addresses how to use these tools to communicate internationally, and it covers additional types of social networking via blogs and games.

Not a bad book. I thought it read pretty well. It's full length, has some good content, and is current as far as I could see when it comes to the topic of social media MARKETING (SMM). And it presents SMM from the slant of a competent up-to-date public relations professional. If you are a public relations professional and have not yet crawled out of the Dark Ages and become computer literate, then I highly recommend you give this book a read. But for the rest of us who have been following SMM (whether we are public relations specialists or not), then I didn't really see much new covered or included in this tome. I did not see a chapter on Investor Relations (IR). And since we all know that is ALL about public relations in large companies I viewed that as a gap, hole or deficiency in the book. I don't consider it to be something that can easily be merged into the topic of "corporate blogging." This is especially true after the authors included Appendix A regarding SEC regulations.
My favorite part of the book was Appendix B where the authors include a grid of URLs and short explanations for each. The Social Media Bible: Tactics, Tools, and Strategies for Business Success ReviewThis book is a good way to get familiar with online social tools. The author covers ways to use email, social networking tools and publishing tools. He has good information about establishing some goals and determining a strategy for meeting the goals. He also has a lot of useful references if you want to get more familiar with a particular topic.
I only gave it three stars for the following reasons:
- Too much coverage of the history of the internet, email, and web pages. If I was interested in that, I'd get a book on the history of the internet, email, and web pages.
- Misinformation on some tools, and missing information about other tools. For instance, the author mentions Joomla, a content management system that can be used to create websites and blogs. He mentions it in a way that may mislead people as to its uses when he states that it can pair with any number of applications. It might work with other applications, but that may require coding skills or money to pay someone to make them work together. He also ignores the multitude of other open source content management systems that are out there.
- A serious amount of repetition in sections one and two. A lot of what is stated in the second section is already in the first, so it added a few hundred pages without saying a whole lot.
This is a good book. It's less complete than the title suggests.

Actionable Web Analytics: Using Data to Make Smart Business Decisions ReviewActionable Web Analytics is both well thought out and well written; but it's geared for big business (or medium size at least). If you're a general manager or executive type getting involved with web analytics this is a great book.
However, it's not geared toward the start-up entrepreneur. One of the sections talks about getting your "team" involved... your team being your: CMO (chief marketing officer), web team manager/leader, designer, information architect, usability expert, copywriter, developer, web analyst, strategist, channel manager, segmentation lead, etc. ,etc. For this I joked to my girlfriend that I guess i can have my meeting in front of the mirror! I'm all of these titles I guess. Another section talks about a company that incorrectly spent $150,000 per month on web analytics. While they did mention that this money was somewhat illspent, for entreprenurs this is totally irrelevant.
I gave it a good rating (4 stars) simply because I think the audience the authors intended (corporate types) will get a great benefit out of it. The book is particularly useful if a reader needs to put together a cohesive argument to someone else (e.g. upper management) that analytics (basically measurements) can help with making a company's website more profitable. To that end, the book does a great job!Actionable Web Analytics: Using Data to Make Smart Business Decisions OverviewKnowing everything you can about each click to your Web site can help you make strategic decisions regarding your business. This book is about the why, not just the how, of web analytics and the rules for developing a "culture of analysis" inside your organization. Why you should collect various types of data. Why you need a strategy. Why it must remain flexible. Why your data must generate meaningful action. The authors answer these critical questions—and many more—using their decade of experience in Web analytics.

Being a student of the web, I read *a lot* of material and I typically don't have time to write a reaction. But every once and a while, something strikes me as noteworthy. Clout is just such a book.
Having run an industry publication on User Experience Design for quite some time, I'm of course familiar with the discipline of Content Strategy. Unfortunately, though, running it means that most of what I read online or hear at conferences sounds the same. "Yes, I know I have to prioritize things and think strategically about content, thanks." What I like about Clout is how novel it really is. In short, Clout:
(1) Got my attention: its a new angle on what could easily be seen as a tired subject.
(2) Is very "practice" driven: I don't like reading about theory, I want to see how content strategy functions in the real world.

All aspects of starting such a business is covered, and after I read the book I could proudly say I knew the how's (as well as what's), and I was on my way starting a business.
But there are two major flaws to this book: first, it's not very readable, and second, it doesn't give you enough hands-on information. There are superfluous step-by-step instructions on how to use FrontPage Express, but the author doesn't tell you much about building store fronts or how to accept credit cards online, two of the more pressing topics for someone wishing to start a e-business.
The CD is a big disappointment. Just a collection of demoware and shareware.
