Pro Web 2.0 Application Development with GWT (Expert's Voice in Web Development) ReviewIf you are looking for an architect-level view of how GWT can best be leveraged by your enterprise projects, Pro App Development with GWT is a great resource. The book goes through the steps in designing a robust Web 2.0 application using Spring, Hibernate, Lucene, and GWT. The finished application can be viewed online at www.tocollege.net.
For developers like myself who have worked with small-scale GWT projects, this book directly answers many of the issues that one encounters when scaling up the project. Examples of these issues are: the most effective way to pass Hibernate classes back to the client using GWT, and how to most efficiently handle a large project through either single (or multiple) modules.
Please note that this book will not teach you GWT; if you are not familiar with GWT, other books (or even the GWT website) would be superior resources.
The only two issues I had with this book were:
* It would be nice if there was chapter-by-chapter source code available so you could more easily mimic the steps in creating the application. Matching the chapter-by-chapter progress to the final source code was a little tedious.
* The author's choice of technologies for the back-end is great (Spring, Hibernate, FreeMarker templates), but if you are an EJB/JBoss/Seam/Wicket shop, you will be doing a lot of translation from the Spring-domain to your particular choice of technology.
Overall, this book is highly recommended and will make deploying GWT much easier on medium and large-scale projects. The author has done a great job in solving common GWT problems; issues that an enterprise architect will surely encounter when using GWT.Pro Web 2.0 Application Development with GWT (Expert's Voice in Web Development) OverviewPro Web 2.0 Application Development by Jeff Dwyer is the first book on professional Web 2.0 principles that includes the Google Web Toolkit (GWT). GWT is one of the leading Java Ajax frameworks in market, and his very hot in terms of relative growth; can be integrated with other broader Java frameworks like JBoss Seam and possibly Spring. This book's focus on a single, extremely rich, example 'killer application" is the thing that sets this apart from other GWT titles. The author is the Founder and CEO of MyHippocampus, which is a good showpiece of innovative uses of GWT. He is a current practicing Web developer using Web 2.0 and current Ajax principles along with GWT as his framework/toolkit of choice.

Cult of Analytics: Driving online marketing strategies using web analytics (Emarketing Essentials) ReviewYes this is true, people seem so much fascinated about the tools these days. If you have one of the strong performing analytics tools like Omniture, Coremetrics, WebTrends, Google Analytics, etc you feel happy and contended that you are moving in the right direction but this is just a hallucination. And you know that at every month end when you send the excel report of your KPI's to the stakeholders and it just goes unnoticed as they don't know what to do.
Once you read this book, understand what is being told here, I bet you would know exactly what you have to do with those tools that puke data. The author has stressed on the entire process of Web Analytics which includes advance level understanding of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), Benchmarking and even how to make your organization Web Analytics friendly.
I loved the How to Develop KPIs chapter. I read it twice - thrice, though mine is just a lead generation website but for me the Micro Level KPIs formulas were helpful. Second most important thing is the REAN model on which the author has stressed. I tried to ignore it at first thinking that its just another technical term to get famous but it turned out that if I think and plan according to the REAN model, the understanding and implementation becomes very easy of KPI's, reporting, Dashboard creation and other things. But this is a secret which I am not going to disclose to anyone in my organization because it simplifies things too much.
In all ... implementing the high end tool is of no use if at the end of the month you do not have any thing to action upon. In order to understand the actionable elements you need to get deeper (both Macro and Micro level) of your KPIs. If you believe Avinash Kaushik's 90 / 10 rule then this book is to help you in the 90 part.
Thanks ! Chandan Sharma

Yahoo Web Analytics: Tracking, Reporting, and Analyzing for Data-Driven Insights ReviewI have worked in the analytics industry for nearly 6 years and anyone who tells you analytics is easy is talking out of their hat! However, as any experienced analyst will tell you there are certain guidelines you can follow that will ease your use of a web analytics product.
Having read Dennis' book and personally worked in Yahoo Web Analytics for over 5 years, there are two things that struck me.
1) Dennis has cleverly turned what can be an incredibly dry subject, into an exciting one; the reader simply has to try putting chapters to the test. The order of the book is logical and, with little jumping around, keeps the reader focused on the job in-hand. As the title denotes: "Tracking, Reporting, and Analyzing for Data-Driven Insights"
2) Equally as important, he has also written the book in such a way that both the 'newbie' and experienced web analyst feels engaged and can leave with takeaways at their respective levels.
I would highly recommend Dennis' book to anyone currently using/starting to use Yahoo! Web Analytics or to complement an experienced users analytics library!Yahoo Web Analytics: Tracking, Reporting, and Analyzing for Data-Driven Insights OverviewYahoo! Web Analytics teaches readers how to collect data, report on that data, and derive useful insights using Yahoo!'s free Web analytics tool . This detailed resource from Yahoo!'s Director of Data Insights discusses the why of Web analytics as well as the how while revealing secrets and tricks not documented elsewhere. The thorough book also offers step-by-step instructions and advanced techniques on everything from using data collection groupings to creating compelling data visualizations. It's a must-read for all analytics professionals and those who want to be.

Social Media Metrics: How to Measure and Optimize Your Marketing Investment (New Rules Social Media Series) ReviewJim Sterne describes in this book techniques and strategies that are essential in order to optimize companies' efforts when it comes to Social Media efforts. This is the first book in this arena and it is a game changer for companies looking to increase their social presence and profitability in any social media: forums, review sites, social networks, blogs, microblogs, and others.
The book will help readers to manage Social Media as a serious business tool, a corporate asset in a world where companies become more aware / vulnerable to customers' opinions and needs. It will help them convince upper management to invest resources in social media and understand how profitable Social Media is for the organization.
As the author writes:
"Success in social media is not found in how many people got your message; it's found in how many people thought your message was remarkable - literally. How many people were intrigued enough by the point you were making to comment on it and pass it along to their friends?"
If your company (large or small) is trying to make a difference and succeed in the online world, I warmly recommend this book.Social Media Metrics: How to Measure and Optimize Your Marketing Investment (New Rules Social Media Series) OverviewThe only guide devoted exclusively to social media metrics
Whether you are selling online, through a direct sales force, or via distribution channels, what customers are saying about you online is now more important than your advertising. Social media is no longer a curiosity on the horizon but a significant part of your marketing mix.
While other books explain why social media is critical and how to go about participating, Social Media Metrics focuses on measuring the success of your social media marketing efforts. Success metrics in business are based on business goals where fame does not always equate to fortune. Read this book to determine:
Why striving for more Twitter followers or Facebook friends than the competition is a failing strategy
How to leverage the time and effort you invest in social media
How to convince those who are afraid of new things that social media is a valuable business tool and not just a toy for the overly-wired

Knowing what works and what doesn't is terrific, but only in a constant and unchanging world. Social Media Metrics is loaded with specific examples of specific metrics you can use to guide your social media marketing efforts as new means of communication.

Actionable Web Analytics: Using Data to Make Smart Business Decisions ReviewActionable Web Analytics is both well thought out and well written; but it's geared for big business (or medium size at least). If you're a general manager or executive type getting involved with web analytics this is a great book.
However, it's not geared toward the start-up entrepreneur. One of the sections talks about getting your "team" involved... your team being your: CMO (chief marketing officer), web team manager/leader, designer, information architect, usability expert, copywriter, developer, web analyst, strategist, channel manager, segmentation lead, etc. ,etc. For this I joked to my girlfriend that I guess i can have my meeting in front of the mirror! I'm all of these titles I guess. Another section talks about a company that incorrectly spent $150,000 per month on web analytics. While they did mention that this money was somewhat illspent, for entreprenurs this is totally irrelevant.
I gave it a good rating (4 stars) simply because I think the audience the authors intended (corporate types) will get a great benefit out of it. The book is particularly useful if a reader needs to put together a cohesive argument to someone else (e.g. upper management) that analytics (basically measurements) can help with making a company's website more profitable. To that end, the book does a great job!Actionable Web Analytics: Using Data to Make Smart Business Decisions OverviewKnowing everything you can about each click to your Web site can help you make strategic decisions regarding your business. This book is about the why, not just the how, of web analytics and the rules for developing a "culture of analysis" inside your organization. Why you should collect various types of data. Why you need a strategy. Why it must remain flexible. Why your data must generate meaningful action. The authors answer these critical questions—and many more—using their decade of experience in Web analytics.

Social Media Metrics Secrets ReviewNo book, no person, no tool contains a silver bullet for measuring and analyzing social media, and Lovett doesn't claim to do so anywhere in his book. One of many quotable quotes to that effect actually leads off Chapter 7: "If you flipped straight to this chapter in hopes of finding the magic solution for calculating the return on investment (ROI) in social media, let me put a pin in that thought balloon straight away." But, what the book *does* offer, and offers in spades, are a range of frameworks and pseudo-formulas ("pseudo" in a good way -- allowing for differing business environments and for a diverse range of social media channels, some of which, likely, do not yet exist) for approaching the *meaningful* measurement of social media, rather than simply the spitting out of readily available data. And, beyond simply offering the bromide of, "Tie your social media efforts to business results," Lovett provides a range of smart approaches (SMART being one of the time-tested approaches offered...and Lovett extends that to a SMARTER approach) *actually* measure performance and analyze results in the messy, messy world that is social media.
The book also covers a range of topics that are adjacent to the core mechanics of social media measurement -- eloquently articulating the social media imperative (if you are a marketer who still doubts whether the phenomenon is "real" and need further convincing), explaining how and why the "marketing funnel" is broken (it really always has been...but social media has really brought that to light and made the funnel paradigm an unworkable construct), assessing how businesses are fundamentally changing the ways they operate and interact with consumers, and even sounding a cautionary note when it comes to consumer privacy.
It's not a book to sit down and skim in an evening (although it is nicely modularized so that individual chapters can stand alone), but, rather, one to sit down and read with a highlighter, a pen, and a notepad, and Post-it flags for key pages (or...a Kindle and digital note-taking devices...but this review is for the paperback version!).Social Media Metrics Secrets OverviewInvaluable advice on analyzing and measuring the effects of social media
Do you wish you could sit down with an expert to figure out whether or not your social media initiatives are working? With Social Media Metrics Secrets, you can! Expert John Lovett taps into his years of training and experience to reveal tips, tricks, and advice on how to analyze and measure the effects of social media and gauge the success of your initiatives. He uses mini case studies to demonstrate how to manage social operations with process and technology by applying key performance indicators, and assessing the business value of social media.
Highlights how social media can impact all aspects of your business and transform the way you quantify successful interactions with customers
Shares innovative techniques for managing the massive volume of social analytics data by putting data to work in ways that contribute to your organizational goals
Details techniques for adopting a Social Analytics Framework for understanding evolving consumer behavior necessary to compete in a socially networked future

Website Optimization: Speed, Search Engine & Conversion Rate Secrets ReviewThe first line of the preface to this book reads, "We've had a website for years now, but it hardly pays for itself." This book aims to solve the mysteries that many site owners feel about the performance of their website. Some owners don't know any better, some don't know where to start, and still others rely on false metrics to make their site seem as though it is doing better than it actually is. This book doesn't contain myths. This book doesn't contain "feel-good" stats about websites. This book contains in-depth information related to every aspect of your website, and how you can turn your website into something that works for you and, ultimately, achieves the goals you set in the beginning. This may be a financial goal and your website is responsible for driving sales. This may be a social networking goal, where you want to nurture a growing community. This may be an advertising goal, where you can optimize your site for advertising campaigns. The core of this book will help you, no matter what the goal of your website. Andy King has done an incredible job of thoroughly covering the areas of performance, optimizing these areas, and then properly analyzing the results.
This book is divided up into two parts: Search Engine Marketing Optimization and Web Performance Optimization.
SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING OPTIMIZATION
Natural Search Engine Optimization
Anyone who has ever been in charge of optimizing a website for search engines can attest to the many challenges they may be presented with. These challenges are, often times, unique to any given project. Andy starts off the book by introducing natural, or organic SEO. He explains the benefits, shows some of the core SEO techniques, and wraps it up into a very thorough ten step process to achieve higher search engine rankings. He covers many aspects such as using a professional design, the pitfalls of Flash, and lists out some of the barriers to SEO. I personally liked that he took the time out to explain what a professional design looks like. He introduces the concept here, and then goes into more depth in a later chapter. I have always seen this as one of the most important aspects to your SEO campaign. Having a solid look, feel, structure, and organization will ultimately help both humans and bots find your important content. I also liked the fact that he had a nice section devoted to Microformats while explaining the benefits of Meta Data.
Natural SEO Case Study: [...]
So how do we know what he says is true or even works? The next chapter dives into a case study. Enough talking about what works, let's see some real world examples. This specific example, [...], took a site that was not professionally designed, and turned it around into something much more meaningful. While the copywriting was re-organized, much of the re-structuring took place in the markup. By employing quality markup, he was able to achieve better results, as things were all put into context. He makes brief mention of using the Lynx test to make sure things make sense. Strip your styles away. Strip your behavior away. Does the content make sense at the core? By re-working the core structure and copy-writing, they were able to see much better organic SEO results than the first iteration. This is just the first step.
Pay-per-Click Optimization
What we have seen in the previous chapters were methods and techniques of natural, or organic, SEO. These techniques revolved around the things that could be instantly done without putting money towards any campaigns. Organic SEO was about setting a good solid foundation for your website. Now that we have that solid foundation, we can look to setting up a pay-per-click campaign. PPC advertising revolves around setting appropriate goals, and targeting the right keywords for the right audience. I found this chapter to be one of the most important chapters in the entire book. I read through it twice. He breaks down setting up PPC campaigns, and then monitoring their health. He has things broken down to their mathematical equations to let you truly gauge your campaign. He mentions many helpful resources and tools for selecting your campaigns, A/B testing your campaigns, and then making sense of the results. He also mentions some of the struggles you will ultimately face while trying to manage a campaign, and some things you can do to alleviate the pain.
PPC SEO Case Study: [...]
Again, instead of just talking about what you could or should do, Andy presents us with another Case Study to put his words into action. Here was the kicker for me: This case study wasn't all about the success of the campaign. He presented the campaign, setup the pricing, and then dove into integration. However, this was for items that were in a very competitive market. While improvements were seen, they didn't always come easy. The end of this case study was not a magical story of success, but a story of planting a seed and nurturing your campaigns - even in a competitive market.
Conversion Rate Optimization
At first glance one might confuse this with PPC Optimization. Andy defines CRO as
[...] the art and science of persuading your site visitors to take actions that benefit you, by making a purchase, offering a donation, or committing to some positive future action.
This chapter presents us with the social aspect of being on the web. We started with a core foundation, and moved to setting up campaigns based on our keywords and target market, now we look to converting the visitors into users of our site. This involves an array of tactics that revolve around the Psychology of Persuasion. This psychology is broken down into many useful strategies and topics. Next up he provides us with an exhaustive list of factors to maximize your conversion rates. Each of the 10 factors he mentions are discussed in great detail. He wraps the chapter up with important advice to Test Everything. All of the lists, and understanding how users make decisions, are useless unless you can test against them and make sure you are still achieving your goals. He shows how to test each aspect by using your analytics, but ultimately each scenario will be different based on the needs.
You have just finished the first half of the book, and you studiously implement the suggested plans and techniques. You find out they were successful and brought loads of traffic to your website, only to have your website crumble under the load. Now it's time to shift gears to a more technical aspect to find out how we can optimize our Markup, our CSS, our JavaScript and Ajax, and our Server.
WEB PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION
The two-fold nature of this book may turn certain people on or off, but all of this comes under the umbrella of optimizing your site. I encourage you to read (and possibly re-read) through the different areas, even if they may seem too deep. While the first part of the book was about keeping your visitors happy, this half makes sure your server is happy.
Web Page Optimization
This chapter seems to be a quick overview of what is to come in the next few chapters. He gives a brief introduction into some of the common performance problems that servers can face, and then gives us a list of things we can do to optimize our site for the request and response life-cycle. This list is exhaustive, but many of the items are discussed in more detail in the coming chapters. This is just to get your feet wet and understand some of the common pitfalls. These include items such as optimizing your markup and removing the load of tables, optimizing your images for display on the screen, optimizing your CSS and using things such as CSS sprites to keep your styles lean and re-usable, and optimizing your JavaScript.
CSS Optimization
Some of these items may be commonplace for different developers, but include a good discussion nonetheless. He breaks down the anatomy of a CSS file and the rules inside of them. He advocates the use of a Reset Stylesheet, and then dives into another list of ten things you can do to optimize your CSS. This chapter is about not just taking CSS from a WYSIWYG output, but truly crafting your CSS to fit your needs. It's about making the CSS readable, re-usable, and taking advantage of the Cascade that we have. Simply accepting the output of an editor isn't enough. I have said it before, and I'll say it again: There isn't an editor out there smart enough to understand your cascade and needs. The advantages of crafting your own CSS means that it's more extensible, maintainable, and semantic. You can group items as your needs require, and by using the cascade and CSS2.x and CSS3 selectors you can begin to achieve an array of different effects that would otherwise be achieved through dirtying up the markup (content layer).
Ajax Optimization
Ajax became all of the buzz for a while. Everyone wanted it, but very few fully understood all of the impacts that it had on many outside factors. This chapter starts off listing some of the common problems with Ajax, and then lists out some proper applications of Ajax. Remember, the goal here isn't to just use Ajax for the sake of using Ajax, but to use it tastefully where it will ultimately enhance the user experience without negatively impacting your SEO visibility. This chapter also breaks down a list of many items you can do to optimize your JavaScript while building your Ajax applications. As with CSS, much of this refers to writing the JavaScript yourself (or assessing and relying on one of the many great frameworks out there) and keeping optimization at the forefront. Don't just accept the output from an editor, you can take the extra steps to make sure your JavaScript is performance friendly for the visitor. For small tasks, this...Read more›Website Optimization: Speed, Search Engine & Conversion Rate Secrets OverviewRemember when an optimized website was one that merely didn't take all day to appear? Advanced Web Metrics with Google Analytics ReviewBrian Clifton's Advanced Web Metrics with Google Analytics should, for all intents and purposes, have the term "Advanced" in bold, possibly in a gigantic type font with fun colours and exclamation marks.
The first 3-5 chapters start innocently enough, and if you have been involved in web analytics or read any other material on the topic you will find it largely rehashes what you already know with a few nuggets of gold throughout. For instance, Brian's discussion as it pertains to Google's tracking of data and its privacy implications offers a wonderful metaphor relating to personal identifiable information, though his emphasis curiously seems to be trying to convince the reader, rather than positioning it as a tool that one can use to assuage stakeholders or individuals who are not sold on analytics.
Chapter 4, which aforementioned is innocent enough, gives one a glimpse of what is to come when Brian delves into a discussion on regular expressions (in order to filter data via GA's inline filter). If you are unfamiliar with a command line interface, advanced search expressions or anything of the sort, good luck. Even if you are, this section comes WAY out of left field and perhaps could have been saved for later, but the information itself is useful and I've been utilizing a number of the expressions ever since.
Chapter 7 is where this book really begins, and Brian starts it off by giving an in depth explanation of how Google tracks pages and summarily applies that logic to show how one can track things like dynamic URL's (rewriting them along the way), tracking file downloads, partially completed forms (cool stuff), and E-Commerce settings (with some neat tricks and workarounds for frequent issues and problems), Flash, and a whole host of things. All of this is done very clearly, but if you don't have some technical aptitude/background, you're going to struggle.
After the largely technical Chapter 7, Brian shifts back into a less technically focused discussion on best practices, including a fantastic write up on goals and funnels (including excellent examples for both). His knowledge and ability to write in a clear form is particularly visible when he discusses segmentation, which, while other authors have done a good job championing, Brian, at least to me, easily blows them out of the water. If you're not technically inclined, this is a great section, though you may still be a bit perturbed by the depth of the filter settings.
Chapter 9 is worth the purchase of this book alone, IF you can follow it. For reference, it's prefaced with the words "In this chapter I assume you have a strong understanding of JavaScript" and it holds true. In this chapter you learn a whole whack of cool things, and I literally have a pile of notes sitting on my desk as a result. Brian goes into everything from adding custom search engines to your GA results, tracking error pages and broken links and tracking referral url's from pay-per-click networks to differentiating links to the same page via site overlay. There's just tons of great tricks and tips in this section, and it's clear to anyone with a clue that not only does the author of this section have an understanding of Google that vastly exceeds your own, but that he can write about it in a clear, easy to understand (given the nature of the topic) way.
Chapter's 10 and 11 are also excellent, and one does not need to be overly technical to understand them. The former discusses KPI's in an extremely clear, helpful manner and even discusses creating reports based on specific job roles. In the process, Brian reveals a bunch of custom KPI's that he has created that are fantastic--which is to say, if you are reading this section do not skip a job role just because it's not applicable, there's lots of gold to be mined.
Chapter 11 focuses on real world tasks, such as diagnosing problem pages, delves deeper into funnels and how to use Google optimizer and is a great read that, no matter who you are, I promise you will learn something from.
In summary, if you are technically inclined and can follow some of the more esoteric topics, this book is an absolute must have--buy it right now. If you are not so technically inclined, there is still lots of value in chapters, 8, 10 and 11 which in my opinion still would merit a purchase, but of course, you are not getting the same value. So, as I said to begin this admittedly long review, this book is phenomenal, but there is one big caveat. You need to have some technical knowledge to truly appreciate how much valuable information it provides.

Digital Impact: The Two Secrets to Online Marketing Success ReviewGenerally, I do not think much of books touting an "x" number of solutions, and less so those claiming access to secrets or arcane knowledge. But my quick flip to the introduction on page 4 grabbed my curiosity and I read it all. No regrets. Overall, an easy read, infused with several empirical datasets...(No surprise here, Ramsey has access to all eMarketer's stats anyways).
Quite impressed with the broad scope and the well thought-out perspective on effective digital advertising. I know from experience that articulating a "universal theory" of digital measurement is not an easy feat, even for experienced analytics professionals. But this book made a commendable attempt. With this strong opening on analytics and content established in the first couple of chapters, the book proceeded to weave the concepts into its discussion of the common channels any digital marketer strives to harness today--display, email, search, mobile, and video.
Audience new to or interested in digital analytics or digital marketing should find this book educating (and entertaining in certain respects), providing a good foundation for understanding other content they may encounter on the several good blogs and articles out there. The advanced digital analytics or strategy professional will find the book refreshing and will certainly pick up additional perspective that will serve him/her well as we all navigate this highly dynamic digital space.Digital Impact: The Two Secrets to Online Marketing Success OverviewWin online by attracting the right customers and getting the right performance measurement
Digital Impact answers the critical questions marketers have about connecting with and influencing consumers online. Written in an easy-to-read, approachable format, this helpful guide presents provocative content along with practical, commonsense methods that can be followed by any businessperson at companies of all sizes. The discussion hones in on two keys to success: building a performance measurement approach that will let you get maximum impact out of your online marketing and ad dollars, and creating magnetic content that attracts customers and keeps them engaged with your brand.
Leverage trust and build ROI in social media and mobile spaces
Get actionable data, best practices, cases studies, anecdotes, practical coaching tips and strategic insights

Landing Page Optimization: The Definitive Guide to Testing and Tuning for Conversions ReviewThis book may be the best thing since sliced bread for you, or can be practically useless. It has an extensive focus on Joe web surfer's persona, on why and how he behaves on the web. It also explains basic concepts such as A-B split testing, ROI, and gives a few examples from author's consulting background. There's a few mathematical formulas, which I am sure are excellent for marketing folks.
But what completely lacks from this book is THE WHAT and THE HOW. The "Uncovering Problems" section is surprisingly small and has no real value. It is explainable - the later part of the book is nothing but a marketing promo of author's consulting business. This costs author 1 star in my review.
The second star I remove because this book is completely useless for small to medium business. If you are a company with under $20 million in revenue - which is where 99% of websites belong - this book is not going to help you much.Landing Page Optimization: The Definitive Guide to Testing and Tuning for Conversions OverviewHow much money are you losing because of poor landing page design? In this comprehensive, step-by-step guide, you'll learn all the skills necessary to dramatically improve your bottom line, including identifying mission critical parts of your website and their true economic value, defining important visitor classes and key conversion tasks, gaining insight on customer decision-making, uncovering problems with your page and deciding which elements to test, developing an action plan, and avoiding common pitfalls. Google Analytics 2.0 ReviewI have read a ton of guides and information on Google Analytics, have taken a 6 week training course (provided by ROI Revolution who happen to be mentioned in this book as it would have it) and have used it for my companies sites as well as some of my clients. I had never read the first version of this book due to the not-so-flattering reviews of it so I decided to take a look at the latest version to see what it had to offer and if it had any useful content I had missed.
After reading it I would say that it is a useful basic guide for anyone getting started with Google Analytics as well as for those looking to brush up on their knowledge and to have a handy guide. There are also some solid, advanced topics they cover in the book such as regular expressions, advanced filters, as well as many side bars and notes during chapters. However, some of these advanced topics feel like they have been thrust upon the reader under the assumption that the reader already has some understanding of some of the advanced topics. I feel as there was not enough back-story to properly introduce some of their advanced topics and many times the location of these advanced topics messed with the flow of the book; they were introduced at times when the section of the book you were reading was rather basic.
The flow of the book (and the interesting tone at some points) seemed a bit off to me and one of the biggest things in Google Analytics was completely left out or barely even touched upon and that was setting up tracking for an E-Commerce site. There is a lot that goes into this (though it is not necessarily difficult but there are many different variables and codes you will need to know and utilize) and you truly need to assess your website and how it is structured before setting up the tracking code, the hidden form and some of the other utm functions (too little time and space to explain all that here). I was very surprised, and quite dissapointed actually, this was completely left out as it it really is a huge part of Google Analytics. They also did not mention or explain many of the other different variables and codes that allow you to more fully take advantage of Google Analytics and make it work just right for you and your business.
Not a bad basic guide to have handy for understanding the reports and some other things but really surprised at how much they left out for the sake of some of the really basic stuff they left in or espoused upon way too much. There are other resources you will need to truly grasp the whole setup process for more complex websites; this book makes it all seem so simple and basic as it doesn't explain that all too well.Google Analytics 2.0 OverviewSite statistics give you raw numbers, but Web analytics crunch those numbers into meaningful metrics you can actually use. Here's what's new in Google Analytics 2.0, such as cross-segment reporting and drilldown content that enhance analysis. Learn to set up Analytics and choose filters, explore goals and goal-setting, use customizable dashboards and date ranges, and master basic analytics and Web statistics concepts. Examine every aspect of available reports, learn to use those best suited for e-commerce sites, and more.
BONUS: Each copy of Google Analytics 2.0 includes a $25 Google AdWords gift card compliments of Google. With this $25 gift card , you can attract new customers to your website on Google's dime.

SEO Warrior ReviewI just finished reading SEO Warrior today. I'm a professional developer (mostly systems engineering in C, python, and java), but I dabble in best-practices web design on my spare time for fun. I picked up a copy of this book as I've heard a lot about "SEO" in the industry, but wasn't sure whether or not it was something real, or just a buzz word.
The author of this book, John I. Jerkovic does an excellent job not only detailing exactly how SEO works, but also why it works, what is good, and what is bad. The book starts out by proving certain SEO elements are legitimate, by using some perl program to perform a large amount of searches for popular keywords, then compare HTML elements of the top ranked sites to see what they have in common (keyword density, title element, meta tags, etc.) In my opinion, this alone was worth the money, as it clearly shows by real-world example, that SEO does work, and proves what elements are more important than others.
The material covered is very thorough (and at times, a bit too wordy), and will leave you with no questions unanswered. The author covers:
- tools to help you test your websites for SEO
- how to use google, yahoo, and bing searches to look for competitors
- how to use google, yahoo, and bing optimizations elements in your HTML pages to promote "organic SEO"
- how to avoid search engine spam
- how the nofollow attribute works
- how to create a sitemap
- how to write a robots.txt file
- where to look for relevant information on SEO
- how to use advertising to your advantage
- how to get money by showing ads on your website
- how to find and detect blackhat SEO
- how to use social media sites (twitter, facebook, etc.) to establish your brand
and a good deal of other topic.
The book is a bit thick, coming in at around 400 pages of content, but has quite a few diagrams illustrating google, yahoo, and bing webmaster tools (among other things), which take up ~5 -> 10% of the total pages. It is a very easy read, not very heavy on coding, but also not too high level.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who does web design themselves, and is interested in making their pages popular, but doesn't really know anything about SEO. The book teaches you everything you'll need to know, and takes you from nothing to everything in a few days.

Google Analytics ReviewI had low expectations for this. After all, Google Analytics has very detailed help pages and you can find specific pages for all of the major concepts covered in this book. So what's the point?
Well, maybe there is a point. First of all, someone new to Analytics may prefer the structure of a walk through. But even someone who has been using Analytics from the day they turned it loose in December of 2005 (that's me) can benefit from the specific examples and gotchas detailed here.
For example, I had never thought of tagging links I send out in emails. I don't know why, and it's not that Google's help pages don't mention that. But their page on link tagging is very Adwords oriented, so I missed that you can tag any link. After reading this book, I have even tagged some internal site links so I can easily see if they get used.
I also hadn't thought about tracking outgoing links. Oh, I knew I could, but again I just didn't ever do it. For reasons I can't entirely explain, the section of this book that ytalks about that made me realize that there actually are a few outbound links I would like to track!
The only complaint here is the same complaint I have about far too many books: excruciatingly boring detail in the beginning that far too quickly ramps up to off-hand references without detailed explanation. I do not know why so many technical books exhibit this same pattern, but I suspect it's probably because the basic stuff is easy to detail and the more tech stuff would just get far too complicated. That's fine, I get it, but leave out the detail on the basic stuff. Nobody who is interested in the more complicated subjects needs the detail of the basics!
I do think the book would have a wider audience if it didn't ignore Adsense entirely. The author is probably accustomed to dealing with large sites that don't care much about that, but for many of us little guys, Adsense is an important part of our site income. A bit of attention wouldn't have hurt, I think.
Other than that, this is very good. I picked up some references to tools I did not know about, got some hints that I do not remember noticing in the Analytics Help pages, and have some new ideas percolating in my head.
By the way, this book led me to the author's Analytics Talk blog at [...] I have been enjoying reading that, probably even more than the book.Google Analytics Overview

Web Analytics 2.0: The Art of Online Accountability and Science of Customer Centricity ReviewAs with most books, I started by taking a look at a few sample pages of the book before getting deep into it. My first data point was page 248: where Avinash describes elegantly a case study on measuring offline applications using Google Analytics. Exquisite. Than, on page 279 he shows how to analyze video influence on revenues. Amazing.
After leafing through the book for a while I went back to the beginning and I really enjoyed the way Avinahs Kaushik links the content; bringing basic and important concepts and very advanced techniques side by side. The book has a friendly tone, i.e., it feels like walking down the street and talking to a friend. Avinash knows when to soothe the reader and let him know that this might be frustrating or difficult, he does not pretend to give all the answers.
A central theme on Avinash philosophy also in his previous book (Web Analytics: An Hour a Day) is that people will bring change, not tools. So, even though he proposes several techniques for choosing vendors, he puts in in its place: if you don't have people, you better look for them, no tool will help you. For every $100 you have, you should invest $90 on people and $10 on tools.
This book describes a holistic approach of the Web Analytics field which he defines as "the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data from your website and the competition, to drive a continual improvement of the online experience that your customers, and potential customers have, which translates into your desired outcomes (online and offline)."
The book treats all the aspects that need to be understood in order to have a successful web strategy: clickstream data, testing, Voice of Customer, social, mobile, video, you name it. In addition, you will learn about planning and growing a web analytics career, so if you are serious about your career, this book is for you.
