Drupal 5 Views Recipes ReviewI am not a PHP expert and I barely know how to spell CSS. My first attempt at website development began three years ago with the decision to utilize Drupal. After three years of trial and error, the searching of forums, posting questions, hiring four different developers, installation and then un-installation of almost one hundred modules, and the purchasing of several reference books and videos, I would say that I still have barely scratched the surface of potential with Drupal.
So it seems to me that there are basically six levels or stages of Drupal knowledge and understanding that users (other than true professional developers) go through:
1. The Discovery phase where the user decides "This looks easy, how hard can it be to plug in a module?"
2. The Awakening phase where the user finds that Drupal is amazingly powerful.... with hundreds of ways to attempt to solve the problem and to really tweak their website, they must use and understand modules and possibly the basics of CSS. This is the stage where the user may even abandon Drupal due to the feeling of being overwhelmed.
3. The Acceptance phase where the user decides they if they want to really customize their site they may need to seek professional help.
4. The Disbelief phase where the user discovers that anyone with a computer can claim to be a Drupal expert and that they (the user) may in fact know as much as the Pro they have hired. This user is not afraid to wade into the fray, comfortable in the knowledge that the site can always be restored from a backup (you DID backup the site didn't you?).
5. The Semi-Pro - Feels comfortable with about 90% of the requirements for building an awesome website, but still discovers new ideas and processes through forums and books
6. The Pro - only occasionally needs help with the finer details of a particular code snippet or module customization, generally can figure it out without assistance
With these phases in mind, I would say that "Drupal 5 Views Recipes" is a fantastic resource for stages 1 through 5. Certainly some users within the different stages will gain more from the book than will others, but overall this is a cookbook with recipes designed to not only attain a particular result... but also to help remove the "tunnel vision" thought process for solving Drupal problems.
This book includes almost 100 "recipes" with specific examples of how to set up the modules to attain a particular result, plus the downloadable files enable copy and paste simplicity.
Topics/Recipes include, setting up the Frontpage, podcasting, Google proximity views, Blogrolls, tweaking themes, displaying charts, Photo Galleries, YouTube, Calendars, Popular Content pages, exposed filters, applying and creating patches, setting up Cron, a thorough discussion with examples for VBO (Views Bulk Operations), Google maps, formatting of queries, Panels, code snippets to tweak the PHP files, etc.
Though written for Drupal version 5, many of the workflows and module combinations will work equally as well in version 6 (although the user interface in v6 may be different in some cases).
As I mentioned earlier..when it comes to site development in general and specifically Drupal, I am NOT a Pro. I need instructions as well as a "Step One, Step Two, Step Three approach and that is what I really like about Marjorie's approach.
This will become a well-worn reference guide in my library of Drupal tools....I highly recommend it!Drupal 5 Views Recipes OverviewThis book will give you a long list of powerful recipes. It can be used by anyone who has a Drupal 5 web site, including original site developers as well as people who have inherited a Drupal 5 site. Some knowledge of HTML and CSS is required; PHP basics will be handy for some of the recipes.

Creating Interactive Web Sites with PHP and Web Services ReviewLet me start by saying that I did find this book quite helpful. It contains a wealth of ideas about topics that a Web site developer would want to know about. The author doesn't just talk about designing a Web site with static data. These Web sites really are interactive, which is the direction that many Web sites are headed today. For example, if you want to create a blog, Chapter 6 will get you started. Are you a merchant that wants to get started with online payments? Chapters 8 and 9 will get you started; although, they probably aren't the end of the journey because the book doesn't address security and privacy concerns. Even so, you can get a lot of information out of this book.
The book does have a few problems, one of which is the title. I didn't really see much in the way of real Web services coverage. Yes, there is a simple example of working with Amazon Web Services in Chapter 7, but that's not really a lot of coverage. The supposed coverage of Google Web Services in Chapter 7 doesn't deal with Google Web Services at all--it discusses how to create request URLs for the standard interface. Does this make the techniques less useful? No, I found them quite helpful, but this truly isn't a Web services book.
I found it a little jolting that the author has just barely introduced functions on page 17 and on page 18 you're already working with databases. I wouldn't consider this a book for the novice--it's not a gentle introduction to PHP at all.
The author also has a tendency to either omit necessary configuration details or mention them in passing so that a reader could easily miss them. For example, the reader needs a developer token to work with the Amazon example, yet the author devotes a single sentence to this topic and it's buried in a paragraph with other details. Consequently, even though the code probably all works, some readers have probably gotten frustrated trying to figure out the missing details.
Given what I know about the book now, it's still a very good purchase and will stay on my bookshelf. The author introduces too many good ideas and interesting concepts to ignore this book. Beginning Ajax (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThis book is really disappointing. The code examples are not at all well suited for the book's supposed target (starting level).
The first example (page 21) is too complex for a beginners' book *and* for a first chapter... and they even say so! (Quote: "Note that this example is quite complex.") I wonder, if they knew it was too complex to grasp at a first glance, why didn't they change it? They introduce even XSL without any need -this can only discourage a beginner. Believe me, I can think of a thousand better examples, and I'm not an expert in Ajax.
It doesn't get any better in the next chapters. The authors can't manage to explain fundamental things like the XMLHttpRequest object, which is an essential part of Ajax, and consequently should be an essential part of a book about Ajax for beginners.
So... I really don't recommend this book. I usually enjoy Wrox books, but I have to say this title is absolutely not worth the money. If you are a beginner, try Wiley's Ajax for Dummies instead. Django 1.0 Template Development ReviewDjango 1.0 Template Development lives up to its title by focusing on the template layer of the Django web application framework although it does go through some basics of setting up your project and some of the details of the Django request handling pipeline. There is very little coverage of models - just enough to give the sample project some data to work with.
There is good coverage of how templates are loaded and guidelines of how to develop views with plenty of tips on leveraging Django's many convenience features (like generic views) and organizing code for better manageability. There are examples for using and writing custom middleware, filters, and tags with special attention paid to best practices in security. A whole chapter is devoted to working with Django's pagination system. Explanations are well supported with the theory behind and examples that demonstrate the details of Django's behavior.
The area that I was hoping for a little more depth was in optimizing performance. Django gives the developer a lot of options of how to design the application. For example, in addition to the typical template "include" syntax, Django also supports template inheritance (where a child template can extend and override blocks of a page from its parent). There is not much information on the performance implications of deep template hierarchies. The caching chapter gives a nice overview of Django's different caching options and engines and general guidelines but perhaps the art of really tuning a site is the topic for another book.
I would highly recommend Django 1.0 Template Development for anyone who wants to efficiently build a clean and manageable template layer for a Django project. In particular, a developer who needs to make the display tier flexible and extensible (such as the book's example of managing a separate site skin for mobile browsers). Although the preface recommends the reader have a working knowledge of Django and Python, I don't think that is really necessary. There is just enough information to help the developer to understand the overall Django framework but the emphasis is definitely on displaying data.

Web Development Solutions: Ajax, APIs, Libraries, and Hosted Services Made easy ReviewWeb Development Solutions: Ajax, APIs, Libraries, and Hosted Services Made Easy by Christian Heilmann and Mark Norman Francis left me with mixed feelings. The title lead me to believe there would be some more in-depth information related to the topics, but in reality the end of the title should have been Using Wordpress. The majority of this book focuses on Wordpress and how each of the topics relate to the blogging platform.
The reason I had mixed emotions is because on one hand, the authors made it seem as though web development is so easy your Grandma could do it, while on the other hand sliding in some disclaimers about needing more knowledge on different topics. I think that this book would give someone just enough material to be dangerous, but not enough to really understand web development as a whole. This book is geared to the beginner in web development, so I was hoping for some more solid material.
With that out of the way, lets take a closer look at the book and its contents:
The first chapter simply discusses the reason for starting up a website in the first place. There are many different reasons for many different people as to why they start a site. Some start for financial reasons (make money and advertising), while others start to share photos with family and friends. This chapter discussed several of these reasons for starting a website.
Chapter two was where the book really started to take off. This chapter discusses the Dilemma of "Rolling your Own" Solutions. We also get a brief crash course in several aspects related to web development.
The author gets you started by installing a local server on your machine with PHP and MySQL. After this is completed, the authors walk through an installation of Wordpress as we begin our journey. Basically every chapter after this will use Wordpress in one way or another.
This is where things get somewhat fuzzy. The chapters related to Ajax, APIs, and Libraries all revolve around Wordpress. The topics are not discussed in depth, but merely show you how to install an array of different plugins available to the Wordpress platform. Flickr, Youtube, Odeo, and Google Maps--all of which are presented as plugins for Wordpress.
The last few chapters involved some good discussions on promoting your content, navigation and layout, and finally--how to get help when you hit a roadblock. The last chapter really made this book worth the read, as it discussed the different ways to get help, the places to go, and how to ask for help in the different communities. There are some very helpful and important tips in this chapter as you seek help from your peers and colleagues.
Overall, the book was not a bad read--it just left me with mixed emotions due to the title of the book. The authors are very knowledgeable and that shows in each of the chapters. Though I felt the book made things look so easy, the authors were sure to point out that the solutions there were not in-depth, but enough to get you started. If you are just beginning your trek into web development, then this book would be a good read to get you up and running in no time flat. However--for long term involvement in the web, or a more in-depth discussion of the topics listed in the title, you may want to grab a few more books.Web Development Solutions: Ajax, APIs, Libraries, and Hosted Services Made easy OverviewBuilding "Web 2.0"/Ajax" applications is all the rage right now, and there is a lot of complicated code involved, but a lot of budding web developers don't realize that most of the hard work is already done for them, and available on the Web, through JavaScript libraries to provide most of that Ajax/DOM Scripting functionality out of the box, Application programming interfaces (APIs,) and hosting services such as Flickr and YouTube to provide all they need to easily store and retrieve their media (be it images, video, or whatever.)All the developer needs to know is enough to successfully wire together all this functionality successfully and responsibly, and this book shows you how. It assumes no knowledge at the start, showing how to set up an effective development environment, then moving on to building up a complete professional "Ajaxy"/"Web 2.0" site step by step, all using ready made functionality available on the web, including storing, retrieving, and displaying content, images and video, and effective site navigation, all topped off with a beautiful CSS layout.But it doesn't stop here. The reader is also shown how to promote their content to attract visitors to their site, and how to find a hosting partner.The techniques contained within this book are becoming increasing more in demand by aspiring and existing web developers, all wanting to be a part of the new generation of the web.

Beginning Drupal (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewKnowing near nothing about Drupal, I wanted to find a book that would give me the big picture and help me develop a nuts-and-bolts working knowledge quickly. I saw so many titles online that I went to a physical bookstore so I could carefully look at the books and choose the most appropriate one for my needs. I looked at many books, and scanned the Introductions and Tables of Contents of several promising ones. I chose "Beginning Drupal" because it had a great balance of concrete examples, theory, and discussion of the implications of making various choices in Drupal.
After I purchased the book and began to actually use it, it became quickly clear that Wiley Publishing had not only jumped the gun in publishing a Drupal 7 book prematurely, but several other things really soured the experience for me. There was no discussion in the introduction about the fact that the book was based on early alpha and beta versions of Drupal 7, and that the installation instructions would install Drupal 6 which is so different that the exercises in the book are more confusing than helpful. Still, I persisted, trying to find the Drupal 6 equivalents to the Drupal 7 examples in the book. (of course this was not mentioned on the cover either, or on the web site. As a matter of fact, the promotional materials misleadingly call Drupal 7 the latest version, but don't mention that it has not been officially released yet). After I hit page 100, I realized that the UI differences were not the only problem. The book was not only unclear because of the version differences, but because the writer apparently didn't have the benefit of a conscientious editor to make the language clear. The grammar was sloppy, but worse yet, the meanings of many of the sentences were foggy.
I did switch over to using Drupal 7 beta, hoping that would help. In fact, it did help with many of the exercises, but there were also far too many instances in which the examples were confusing because they were based on earlier versions of Drupal 7. I looked at the "errata" published for the book, but they barely scratched the surface of the errors in the book.
I really liked the unfolding of concepts as the book progressed, in that sense the design of the book was brilliant. But it was sloppily executed, and there were numerous instances in which avoidable inconsistencies prevented examples from working the way they should have.
In summary, I'd say that this book was a well conceived but so poorly executed and rushed to market. It wasted more of my time and effort than any other "how to" book that I have ever encountered in my 4 decades in the computer business.Beginning Drupal (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewA thorough introduction that lessens the learning curve to building sites with Drupal 7

I bought this book again because the material is definitely good. I'm really bummed Friends Of Ed let it go to press with all these errors though. I mean, come on--I'm finding errors all over the place! That is a great disservice to Sambells. But I've decided the material is worth wading through the many, many copy editing oversights. I'm crossing my fingers I don't get stuck troubleshooting typos in the code that choke my browser. That could easily waste hours of my time.

I was pretty excited after I dropped the $50 or so to by this book because the contents are right down my alley. Unfortunately, I could hardly make it out of Chapter 1 for all the typos and editorial oversights. Here are a few as an example:
PG 34 -- "myVarialbe" instead of "myVariable"
PG 35 -- "when you retrieving" instead of "when you are retrieving"
PG 36 -- references a function called "initAchors()" that isn't used in the example code for that example. initAnchors() appears in the next example on the next page.
PG 37 -- number of iterations in loop changes from 3 to 5 from 1st example to 2nd example for no apparent reason - this is confusing and distracts from the point being made.
PG 37 -- Figure 1-7 shows three objects in diagram instead of the 5 needed (one for each loop)
This is all in just 3 pages!
This is the part of the book I started reading first so I assume the rest of the book is going to be as poorly edited/ proofread. This surprises me as I own over 5 or 6 titles from the Friend Of Ed series and I don't recall ever seeing so much as a typo in any of them.
Overall, I think the book shows promise. But I can't tolerate errors like this in a programming book. They are difficult enough to read already without having to figure out what the message was "supposed" to be.
I'm returning this book to the store. When it reaches a later edition I may give it another go. CMS Made Simple 1.6: Beginner's Guide ReviewI have been using CMSmadesimple (CMSMS) for 5 years or so. It's a very robust CMS (content management system) that is quite easy to learn in a basic way. To get more out of CMSMS though you need to know a bit more than you can easily pick up from just using the application, visiting the WIKI and user forums.
This book is exactly what a user new to CMSmadesimple would need to jump-start the learning experience. A web developer with more experience but no experience specifically with CMSmadesimple or the Smarty templating engine would also benefit from this book. To be sure, the measured pace of the book is perfect for a neophyte to CMSmadesimple.
The approach taken by the book is to teach you how to install CMSmadesimple and then how to build an example website from scratch using the book as your tutor. It walks you through each and every step, carefully assessing your progress along the way with end-of-chapter quizzes and a great method of delivering the content.
The book follows the procedure of telling you what you are about to do, telling you how to do it then explaining to you what you just did. For block-heads like me, it is the only way I learn well... by reading, doing and recapping.
All the major areas are covered including how to Install CMSMS, how to use the core modules, an understanding of how to use Smarty to build your templates, how to convert other website templates to work with CMSMS, a brief discussion of SEO and how to add e-commerce functionality and a discussion of Users and Permissions. There is a lot of information packed into this slender book. All of the information is presented in a no-nonsense, straightforward manner.
If you prefer reference types of books, this probably won't meet your needs as it does take a tutorial approach and is best consumed in a linear fashion. You -could- use it by jumping around from here to there if you just wanted to discover how to do some specific things such as adding a protected page to your site, easily implementing YouTube videos onto your pages or perhaps how to create a form with various types of input fields. But this book is not a reference book for CMSmadesimple. Rather it is a guided approach to learning the basics, and then some, of CMSmadesimple.
The author makes ample use of screenshots along the way. The code snippets are available from the publishers website, which is fortunate since no CD accompanies the book.
There are not many books dealing with CMSmadesimple and I was thrilled to find one that covered all the essentials in an easy to digest way. I'd highly recommend this to anyone contemplating the building of a website with CMSmadesimple. It will greatly enhance your early experiences with the application and explain some of the concepts that even I didn't have a firm grasp on until reading the book. In particular, the brief but helpful discussion of how the Smarty templating engine works is indispensable information.
I can't think of a better introduction to CMSmadesimple. I wish I'd had this book 5 years ago. It would have accelerated my learning greatly. And as an aside, if you are using WordPress to build websites but blogging is not your primary focus for the website, give CMSmadesimple a good look. It is really slick, has an active user forum and is continually undergoing development.CMS Made Simple 1.6: Beginner's Guide OverviewThis is a practical, hands-on book based around a case study website, which you will set up in this easy-to-understand introduction to using CMS Made Simple. I have several other books about drupal, including Pro Drupal Development, Second Edition (Beginning from Novice to Professional) and Learning Drupal 6 Module Development: A practical tutorial for creating your first Drupal 6 modules with PHP, yet I have found Leveraging Drupal to be the most helpful yet.
Leveraging Drupal goes into precisely the topics related to Drupal development which your average "working stiff" building Drupal sites runs into on every job: version control, the development and deployment process, upgrades, internationalization options, theming, etc. Included are helpful life-saving tidbits such as dealing with the infamous WSOD (php's white screen of death), checking out drupal via CVS, and setting up cron. It more than pays for itself in just the first three chapters.
One of the things I like most about the book is that the author treats website development with the same respect as any software project. From the book: "First of all, in a software project (and because of it's complexity, that is what a website application is), you are either controlled by circumstances or you succeed - but only if you can maintain your grip on things."
I would compare it to my other favorite programming book: Agile Java(TM): Crafting Code with Test-Driven Development (Robert C. Martin Series) by Jeff Langr. Leveraging Drupal is similar in that after reading and digesting it, you are a more mature developer than you were before.Leveraging Drupal: Getting Your Site Done Right (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewThis book is a step-by-step guide and a hands-on co-piloted experience for those trying to make Drupal powered websites work for them, and for their clients. Django 1.2 e-commerce Review"Django 1.2 E-Commerce" starts with a very ambitious goal: design, develop and deploy a functionam ecommerce web site for the fictional [...] company. Sounds great, doesn't it?
I started flipping through the usual introductory pages explaining what Django is and why use it for a project like this. It was all fairly brief which already led me to believe that knowledge of Django's inner works and basic setup and configuration was required to follow along.
Well, the instructions are not as streamlined as other programming books I've read and it could be fairly tricky to follow the examples and logic if you're not already familiar with how Django works. There are several typos in the example code as well, mostly due to missing spaces between the commands and arguments. Adding to the confusion is the style the author chose to deliver his explanation of specific code changes, displaying snippets of code that will leave the reader wondering what specific file is being discussed.
Now, if none of these things sound scary to you, you'll be happy to know that the project itself is fairly well designed and worth your time. It was also the first time I saw an example of integrating Django with Google Checkout to set up a "shopping cart" mechanism, and by the time you're done with the second chapter, you will have a very basic but functional ecommerce web site.
The subsequent chapters were a blur, talking about adding external modules and services to enhance your site's searching capabilities as well as exposing the data from your "store" via APIs and generating reports with ReportLab. The author also talks about making use of javascript to add that AJAX-y feeling that we've come to expect of most modern sites and how to take advantage of S3 storage to sell your product.
The last chapter finally walks you through a few different ways you can deploy your final project to the world out there. I thought it was interesting to see Fabric being mentioned as a driver for deployment, as I have been playing with it at work to help me perform a series of tests on several different hosts for QAing purposes. Come to think of it, this may have been the first time I've seen it mentioned in a book, so I'm glad that this project seems to be picking up steam.
Overall, even with the issues of poor proof checking of the source code and the "everything and the kitchen sink" approach to the first chapters, if you're not new to Django and need to get some ideas on how to design and develop an ecommerce website, you may want to check out this book. Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP, ColdFusion, and PHP: Training from the Source ReviewI have quite a bit of experience building static sites and pages and realized the importance of expanding my understanding of building dynamic sites. I have a pretty good understanding of using Dreamweaver but am just getting started on using Dreamweaver CS3. I was hoping to get a better idea of how to use all of the new features in CS3 while also specifically learning php. I got more than I bargained for. Specifically, I was not aware of the differences between ASP, ColdFusion and PHP. Now, I have a much better feel of which one to use for different situations.
One of the things that struck me right away is that anyone, regardless of your current level of experience, that is interested in using Dreamweaver can start out with this book. For those of you who already have Dreamweaver experience, you can speed through a few of the first parts but it is always great to see how someone else approaches things.
The tutorials and sample files were great and very easy to use - very intuitive and the sequential steps made lots of sense. I am still in the process of implementing all of the things I am learning. As a result of using this book, I am now planning to revise an existing static site and launch a new dynamic site. I love the way the book is written - very practical. I almost feel like the authors are having a dialog with me all along the way.

As this book was obviously written a couple of years back, a lot of information is out-dated. I had to jump through quite a number of hoops, looking for info and tips on the web, to get the project going. There are numerous errors starting from using Maven to create a Tapestry 5 project all the way down to attributes of form tags. While some of these errors are minor and are caused by the continued evolution of Tapestry 5, they put a considerable damper on my learning process and make it unnecessarily frustrating.
A major omission from this book is the integration with any ORM tool such as Hibernate. In my opinion, this leaves the book "half-baked." After going through this book, one would not be able to create a "real" project that include DB persistence. Practical Rails Social Networking Sites (Expert's Voice) ReviewThe is essentially a programming cook book with recipes centered on social networking functionality. That being said - this is not a "getting started on rails" book; you should have some idea of how to use rails (but you dont have to be an expert).
Here are some of the recipes: developing a CMS, blog with RSS, blog with web services, a forum, photo gallery (probably would have been better if this one had used Amazon's S3), adding tag functionality, creating a mobile version of your site, XFN, ...
Unless you're a broke student debating between this and food, I'd get this book. There are decent examples that are useful to see. It's pretty good considering Amazon's cheap price and considering this is the only book out on Rails related to social networking sites (as of when I wrote this review).
Update: I've now read the other Ruby on Rails Social Network Book: RailsSpace. In my opinion I would get both. However if you have to choose one it would depend both on your skill level and taste. Would you rather have more subjects covered with less material, or would you like less subjects being covered more in depth. Joomla 1.5 Template Design ReviewI, too, can only give this book two stars, which is unfortunate, because had a little bit more care been taken this could have easily been a five-star book.
The main reason I can only give the book two stars is due to the same concerns that have been previously expressed...the code and style sheets are not in sync with the text of the book (and I'm only in Chapter 2). I've had to constantly replace the code and style sheets I've typed in from the book with the code and style sheets downloaded from the site. More often than not, changes have been made to the code or style sheets as the book progresses without the author even indicating that such changes have been made. This is not something that someone who has purchased this book should have to contend with.Joomla 1.5 Template Design OverviewThis book covers the "how-tos" of creating templates for Joomla! 1.5. There is also advice about what works and what to consider when working with your Joomla! 1.5 template. Because this title is about Joomla! 1.5 templates and not about CSS or semantic XHTML, an understanding of established and current XHTML and CSS techniques for achieving compliant, semantic, and accessible designs is assumed. However, quality references and links are always given so the reader can learn more about any specific CSS or XHTML technique discussed if they are unfamiliar with it. This book is aimed at web designers who want to create their own unique templates for Joomla! 1.5. Readers should have a basic knowledge of Joomla! 1.5 (Building Websites with Joomla! 1.5 by Hagen Graf from Packt Publishing will help you with this) and also basic knowledge of table-less CSS and XHTML techniques, as well as using Dreamweaver or other text/code editors for coding purposes.

Web Site Cookbook: Solutions & Examples for Building and Administering Your Web Site (Cookbooks (O'Reilly)) ReviewThe author says this is the book he wished he'd had when he started building websites ten years ago. I agree. The book is structured as a series of problems posed, with solutions, a discussion, and related links for follow-up. Some of the problem/solution match-ups certainly sometimes read like notes kept handy after some bit of knowledge was learned the hard way.
The book is written for those who make a living by designing, developing, maintaining, and marketing Web sites for themselves or other people. The exclusive focus is on the familiar world of LAMP -- Linux/Unix with Apache, MySQL, and PHP.
The author shares lots of handy code snippets (mostly PHP) to deal with technical issues but he does not neglect the soft skills, such as approaching the information architecture of a proposed site -- and marketing the finished one.
Addison goes into as much depth as is necessary to solve a problem and resists the temptation to go further. He clearly keeps up with best practices. I was impressed that his advice for a printer-friendly site is to use print media CSS. Most sites, even new ones, use more expensive and labor-intensive methods, like adding middle-layer software or creating separate content versions.
Quibble: the book does not mention, nor do the publisher's or author's sites offer any way to download the code snippets and the lists of related links.
