Poor Richard's Branding Yourself Online ReviewThe Internet offers a lot of "get rich quick" schemes, and advice based on 20th-century advertising techniques. However, what worked in the past century and before the Internet, is not working now. From "Cluetrain" to "Gonzo Marketing," there's ample proof of that.
But, if you're self-employed and/or building your online identity... how do you start? And, if you've been online for awhile but you're somehow missing the boat--or at least your audience--what do you do without a corporate advertising budget and webmaster/advisors to help you?
The answer is simple: You get this book. And read it. I've read Chapter Two at least ten times, and I'm still making notes about what I'm changing on my own website (online since 1995, and boy-oh-boy have I made mistakes! *sigh*).
Baker's books are not for wimps. And, they're not the sitcom version of business, where you spend a few days creating a by-the-numbers clone of others' websites, and then sit back expecting income to flood in like clockwork.
Instead of being a book that you read, say, "Oh, that made some good points," and then put on a shelf to collect dust, this is a book that you'll read, re-read, and keep close to hand. Baker's book is information-packed. There is no way that you'll learn it all in one reading, or even two.
This is easily in the top five books that everyone who is (or wants to be) in business online MUST own. Sure, you can read the sample chapters at Baker's website, or take this book out of the library, but it contains too much important advice for that. And, you'll refer to it often, as well.
Buy this book. Roll up your sleeves and do what he says. It's how to succeed on- and offline, in the 21st century. It's not your parents' business era anymore. Learn the new rules in this book, and give yourself a genuine chance for success.
Baker's information would be cheap at ten times the price; it's already helped me to increase the daily hits at one of my websites from 500/day to over 800/day. And, I'm still on Chapter Three!Poor Richard's Branding Yourself Online OverviewWhen promoting on the Internet, a personal approach is ideal. Although glitzy advertising may still work in the offline world, when people go online, they don't connect with logos, theme songs, or mission statements. They connect with people. And when lots of people know who you are and what you stand for, you are in an incredible position to better your life and profit from your notoriety. That's the essence of the brand called YOU.This book gives you the essential tips and tools to effectively create a brand name for yourself and use the Internet to tell the world about it. You'll discover:*What personal branding is, why you need it, and how to use it to further your goals*The best ways to determine the perfect brand image and the methods for hammering home that image so it makes the most impact in the least amount of time*Effective online and offline strategies for branding your image and identity onto the computer screens and into the consciousness of the massesYou may be asking, "Why do I need to brand myself online? How does it benefit me?" The answer is that branding allows you to take control of your online identity and influence the impression that people have of you, which helps you accomplish the following objectives:*Establish yourself as an expert in your field*Connect with like-minded people on a large scale*Focus your energies on feeding your life's purpose*Build a solid reputation within your industry*Become self-employed doing something you enjoy (or gain credibility and be in a better position to land the job you really want)*Increase your notoriety and improve your perceived value in the marketplace*Develop your circle of influence within a business niche*Earn praise and recognition from a growing number of people who embrace your message*Become a celebrity in your chosen fieldIf you're an artist, branding helps you connect your name with your technique and attract more (and more paying) fans. If you're a Web designer, branding allows you to mix your attitude and distinct perspective with your technical skills so more people hire you. If you're a writer, branding paves the way to reaching a loyal readership without having to kiss the, err...feet of a major publisher.Poor Richard's Branding Yourself Online not only explains why you will benefit from establishing a personal brand; it also explains how you determine your brand identity. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:What are your personal strengths and weaknesses? What are you passionate about? What are you knowledgeable about? What solutions do you provide?Once you have learned how to effectively position yourself, define your focus, and develop a "fan-club mentality," the author delves into ways of promoting the brand you. You'll find out how to:*Maximize e-mail for brand delivery—there's more to it than just creating a signature file*Design your Web site for brand impact, includes tips on content, design, and interactivity*Exploit the e-zines and Web sites of others*Publish e-books and e-mail newsletters to distribute your message*Brand by networking in mailing lists, discussion forums, message boards, and other online avenuesThroughout the book are examples of people who have successfully branded themselves. Appendix A, "Online Success Stories," offers a Q&A with some of the most well-known personalities on the Internet. These examples provide insight and inspiration, and illustrate the following:*They build trust by conducting themselves honestly and with integrity.*They are clear about who they are and what they offer; they have a consistent theme.*They use repetition to maintain visibility and create familiarity.*They are available—it is easy to contact them and they respond within a reasonable amount of time.*They touch people by inspiring them, revealing personal experiences, taking a stand on an issue, etc.*They teach people with free articles, resources, and information on their Web site.*They exploit third-party endorsements and awards. In advertising terms, branding is the image created in the minds of people when they see or hear a name, product, or logo. With all of the competition on the Internet, companies realize the critical importance of corporate branding. They understand that people are more likely to buy from a company they know or recognize. The same holds true for individuals. The Internet provides an excellent, cost-effective tool to gain recognition, whether you want to become a celebrity or expert in your field, or simply hope to promote a business, idea, or cause. If you're looking for a book on corporate branding, look elsewhere. If you seek low-cost, high-impact tactics to establish a rock-solid identity for yourself online, this is the resource you need.

Blogging in a Snap (Sams Teach Yourself) ReviewBlogging in a Snap
By Julie C. Meloni
SAMS Publishing
ISBN 0-672-32843-7
270 pages
Price: US $24.99, CAN $34.99 £17.99
If you've been thinking about starting your own blog but haven't figured out how and where to begin, Blogger.com is a very popular place to check out. Its simple user interface can get you up and blogging in no time.
Though the set up instructions for Blogger.com is are relatively easy, Julie Meloni's Blogging in a Snap explains the obvious and not so obvious ins and outs of blogging on Blogger.com. She takes you through the process of setting up your account, selecting a template, configuring your comments settings, creating your blogging profile, naming your blog, writing and publishing your first posts, and bringing potential readers to your site.
If you've already begun a blogging on Blogger.com and you want to expand your use, Meloni explains how to modify your template using HTML and CSS codes, how use third-party tools, and how to create a moblog, a type of blogging done with your cell phone. I was surprised that she doesn't explain how to edit the link list, which is an essential part of every Blogger template. Unlike other blogger platforms, Blogger requires that you manually add links in the template itself using HTML code.
I've visited many Blogger.com websites and noticed a number of new bloggers who seemingly don't know how to modify their site, such as the elements in the sidebar. They haven't learned how to add links or change the names of the subheadings. Perhaps the reason for this is because they have to open up and modify the blogsite's template. Users with little or no knowledge of HTML code might even wonder why they have access to this coded template. What on earth do you do with language that looks like this:
Meloni tries to demystify the template code and show you ways to customize your Blogger site. Like other SAMS Teach Yourself books, Melon's step-by-step instructions include numerous screen shots that reflect and expand on what she explains in her textual instructions.
She includes the template code for one of Blogger.com's basic templates and identifies and explains its major elements, like the header, sidebar items, the comments-related area, and the metadata. Her best instructions are when she takes you step by step through a particular template modification, like including images in your blog posts, adding tables, displaying recent comments and adding a blogroll on your main page. However, some of her other perhaps more advance HTML and CSS modification strategies are too brief and could use more explaining or a second book for intermediate and advance users.
Learning and using HTML and CSS code can be daunting for many users. Working through this book gave me the idea to print out a copy of my Blogger template and peruse it using Meloni's guidelines. There's little risks making modifications to your template if you back-up a copy of it and use the preview button before saving your changes. I also magnify my template on my computer screen (using Command-+) so I can better read and modify selected code. The template window also includes a button to clear the edits you make in it.
Meloni goes to explain how to use many other and newer tools found on the Internet. For example, how to use your Flickr account to insert images and messages in your Blogger site. And setting up a Google ads and affiliation links if you're interested in making a few bucks with your blog.
A useful Appendix further explaining HTML and CSS fundamentals is included, but a list of additional resources might have been valuable for intermediate bloggers.
Overall, Blogging in a Snap is a good introduction if you want to set up an account with Blogger.com (other platforms are not covered.) The instructions are clear and concise, and Meloni has set up a Blogger site to promote and make updates to her book.

Internet Marketing-Profits That Lie Hidden In Your Website: How To Triple Your Web Sales In 25 Days ReviewThis book is from a guy that makes a living from creating ads that sell. That is his real job. He does it for online and offline clients. So while he goes about his daily business he amasses tons of information that he eventually decided to put into a book to sell. I don't get the idea at all that this is some guy who makes a career out of writing Internet marketing guides. As you go through the material you begin to realize something: The guy really knows what he is talking about. You can tell by the examples in the book that he does this stuff both offline and online.
The book is very, very good for those wanting to learn marketing techniques online. Honestly it's like a textbook. In many respects he pulls back the curtain on marketing tactics. I found it helpful for understanding why marketers write the way they do. From the long sales copy to bold claim headlines to web page layouts. Sure we all know that headlines matter, buyers like long reads, etc. But Lance explains it in a way that makes sense and gets you thinking how to implement the tactics in your own sites and landing pages.
The book is full of examples from email writing to headlines to layouts. There is so much information on how to create the right advertisement. If you are doing PPC ads and landing pages then this book is for you. If you have a website and are trying to sell something then this book is for you. OK, if you are already making $5K a month then it's probably not for you. But if you are just starting out trying to sell things on the Internet or are making a humble sum of cash then I really believe that a book like this will help. I've read quite a few PPC ebooks and none are close to this. I believe it is because Lance is actually a professional sales copy writer for both online and offline clients. And you know, PPC success is really all salescopy.
You know how marketers will say that you need to do "X" to convert more sales? And you sit there wondering why? And you get the sense that the joker has no clue why either, but he says so because that's what "they" say works, or learned it from someone else, or saw an example from another salespage. Well Lance explains the why, for every step of building a salespage. You'll read through the manual and think "ah, that's why I'm told to do that", or "so that's why this is suppose to convert better". You get the sense that the guy is simply a pro at what he does and has answers for building webpages that sell.Internet Marketing-Profits That Lie Hidden In Your Website: How To Triple Your Web Sales In 25 Days OverviewDirect Web Sales Start with Good Web Design Many small business owners believe all that is needed for good website design is to hire a graphic artist to produce an "online brochure" for the company. That's fine, if you have no intention of using your website to generate actual sales. If your purpose is to make a direct sale through your website, it is crucial that you understand what good website design really is.In Internet Marketing: Profits That Lie Hidden in Your Website, you'll discover how to design a direct sales website, how to write profitable sales copy, how to optimize your website for the major search engines-such as Yahoo, Google, MSN, and AOL Search-and how to use Google Adwords to your advantage. You don't need flash animations or fancy graphics to have a good website. Good design is all about focusing your marketing message exactly as you want it, and presenting it in such a way that when your customers do arrive, they'll be ready to buy.

WordPress 2.7 Complete ReviewThis book helped me figure out how to convert an existing site to a WordPress theme, an especially challenging project since my existing html page design didn't have any clear header, middle, footer arrangement. I was able to figure out where I wanted to take things with my own theme development mostly from reading Chapter 6. (Getting under the engine with the WP template tags is far more empowering than following a tutorial that has you start out by fiddling around with an image in Photoshop.) Well written, too.WordPress 2.7 Complete OverviewWritten in a clear, easy-to-read style, the book takes you through the essential tasks required to create a feature-rich blog as quickly as possible. From initial setup to customizing modules, each task is explained in a clear, practical way using an example blog developed through the book. This book is a guide to WordPress for both beginners and those who are slightly more advanced. It's for people who are new to blogging and want to create their own blogs in a simple and straightforward manner, and it's also for people who want to learn how to customize and expand the capabilities of a WordPress web site. It does not require any detailed knowledge of programming or web development, and any IT-confident user will be able to use the book to produce an impressive blog.

Web Development Solutions: Ajax, APIs, Libraries, and Hosted Services Made easy ReviewWeb Development Solutions: Ajax, APIs, Libraries, and Hosted Services Made Easy by Christian Heilmann and Mark Norman Francis left me with mixed feelings. The title lead me to believe there would be some more in-depth information related to the topics, but in reality the end of the title should have been Using Wordpress. The majority of this book focuses on Wordpress and how each of the topics relate to the blogging platform.
The reason I had mixed emotions is because on one hand, the authors made it seem as though web development is so easy your Grandma could do it, while on the other hand sliding in some disclaimers about needing more knowledge on different topics. I think that this book would give someone just enough material to be dangerous, but not enough to really understand web development as a whole. This book is geared to the beginner in web development, so I was hoping for some more solid material.
With that out of the way, lets take a closer look at the book and its contents:
The first chapter simply discusses the reason for starting up a website in the first place. There are many different reasons for many different people as to why they start a site. Some start for financial reasons (make money and advertising), while others start to share photos with family and friends. This chapter discussed several of these reasons for starting a website.
Chapter two was where the book really started to take off. This chapter discusses the Dilemma of "Rolling your Own" Solutions. We also get a brief crash course in several aspects related to web development.
The author gets you started by installing a local server on your machine with PHP and MySQL. After this is completed, the authors walk through an installation of Wordpress as we begin our journey. Basically every chapter after this will use Wordpress in one way or another.
This is where things get somewhat fuzzy. The chapters related to Ajax, APIs, and Libraries all revolve around Wordpress. The topics are not discussed in depth, but merely show you how to install an array of different plugins available to the Wordpress platform. Flickr, Youtube, Odeo, and Google Maps--all of which are presented as plugins for Wordpress.
The last few chapters involved some good discussions on promoting your content, navigation and layout, and finally--how to get help when you hit a roadblock. The last chapter really made this book worth the read, as it discussed the different ways to get help, the places to go, and how to ask for help in the different communities. There are some very helpful and important tips in this chapter as you seek help from your peers and colleagues.
Overall, the book was not a bad read--it just left me with mixed emotions due to the title of the book. The authors are very knowledgeable and that shows in each of the chapters. Though I felt the book made things look so easy, the authors were sure to point out that the solutions there were not in-depth, but enough to get you started. If you are just beginning your trek into web development, then this book would be a good read to get you up and running in no time flat. However--for long term involvement in the web, or a more in-depth discussion of the topics listed in the title, you may want to grab a few more books.Web Development Solutions: Ajax, APIs, Libraries, and Hosted Services Made easy OverviewBuilding "Web 2.0"/Ajax" applications is all the rage right now, and there is a lot of complicated code involved, but a lot of budding web developers don't realize that most of the hard work is already done for them, and available on the Web, through JavaScript libraries to provide most of that Ajax/DOM Scripting functionality out of the box, Application programming interfaces (APIs,) and hosting services such as Flickr and YouTube to provide all they need to easily store and retrieve their media (be it images, video, or whatever.)All the developer needs to know is enough to successfully wire together all this functionality successfully and responsibly, and this book shows you how. It assumes no knowledge at the start, showing how to set up an effective development environment, then moving on to building up a complete professional "Ajaxy"/"Web 2.0" site step by step, all using ready made functionality available on the web, including storing, retrieving, and displaying content, images and video, and effective site navigation, all topped off with a beautiful CSS layout. But it doesn't stop here. The reader is also shown how to promote their content to attract visitors to their site, and how to find a hosting partner. The techniques contained within this book are becoming increasing more in demand by aspiring and existing web developers, all wanting to be a part of the new generation of the web.

How to Promote Your Music Successfully on the Internet: 2007 Edition ReviewNot only is the best publication about how to sell your music on the internet that I have ever read, but the information contained within this literary gem will be of great value to anyone wishing to make music a carreer. I have purchased other books regarding the music industry and how to succeed but this by far outstips the others by a mile. You can buy this book with confidence, the author is who he says he is....a genuine musician...with the same hopes and aspirations as his readers and like his readers he likes to cut through the waffle. I can't rate the book or the author highly enough. How to Promote Your Music Successfully on the Internet: 2007 Edition OverviewThe Internet is an incredible promotional tool for musicians. You can get radio play, grow a fan base, create a distribution channel and sell CDs and music downloads all online. Imagine how much music you'd sell if *thousands* of people heard your music every day? Most musicians, however, have no idea where to begin when it comes to online promotion. Some get as far as putting up a web site, but stop there. That's where this book will help. David Nevue, an independent musician like yourself, uses the Internet to generate well over $60,000 a year in music-related sales. Today, David is doing the "music biz" full-time, having quit his "day job" in 2001 after making more money selling music online than working for a corporation! In this book, David will take you step by step through the same marketing strategies he's used since 1995 to promote his music successfully on the Internet. Now you too can build your own music career using the Internet -in your own time and on your own terms.

How to Do Everything with Web 2.0 Mashups ReviewThis book reminded me of Marine Corps boot camp. We did a lot of stuff, but only just enough to say we did it and not enough to learn anything from it. This book tries to cover far too many topics in a very short space. We used this book for a class I took the summer before last. It is not even really a good introduction as it leaves out many particulars needed to understand what is going on. I had to do quite a bit of internet research just to figure out much of what this book purported to teach. I say skip this book and get some more thorough books on the individual topics. How to Do Everything with Web 2.0 Mashups Overview

Reading the Web: Strategies for Internet Inquiry (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) ReviewI was required to read this book for a class I was taking. At first glance I thought it would be "just another textbook." However, I quickly realized what a goldmine of information and guidance the book delivers. It takes a huge concept and breaks it down into readily usable applications. Too often I will find great theory resources, but they will lack the day-to-day nitty gritty of application. This book has the theory, the steps, the handouts, even the lesson plans. I found the readability engaging and direct. Great resource and great introduction into the miasma of inquiry-based research and 21st literacy skills. Thank you, Drs. Eagleton and Dobler, you have given me a launch into a whole new curriculum!Reading the Web: Strategies for Internet Inquiry (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) OverviewPacked with ideas and instructional activities that cut across all content areas, this engaging book provides a comprehensive framework for promoting vital Web literacy skills in grades 3-8. Teacher-friendly special features include helpful graphics, sidebars, practical tips, and nearly 100 reproducibles. Using a research-based, classroom-tested model of Internet inquiry, the authors explain the "whats," "whys," and "how-tos" of helping diverse learners: *Locate useful information sources on the Web*Navigate the contents of a website*Critically evaluate what they read online*Synthesize the results of an Internet inquiry*Express new knowledge in their own words

Internet Marketing For Free: The Guide: Internet Marketing To Go Review
This book was OK. It had the potential to be a great little book on Internet marketing. However, I just had too much trouble digesting it. I did not see any reason to split the content into three parts, 21 chapters, and an appendix. And there were typos - more than just a few. On top of that, I found the book to be incredibly wordy. And the journalistic style of writing is adequate for newspaper articles, but not for something sold as a book. There were many one-sentence paragraphs throughout. And the page formatting left me thinking I was reading a text file that had been converted to PDF.
If the author had organized the book into eight chapters as follows, and done a nice job of developing a theme in each chapter, then I suspect the book would deserve at least a 4-star rating.
1. Search Engine Optimization
2. Article writing & submission
3. Blogging
4. Posting on online directories
5. Posting press releases on PR directory sites
6. Posting on free classifieds sites
7. Social networking & forums
8. Affiliate programs & Joint ventures
Unfortunately, the book is not so neatly organized. And there are numerous "bonuses" refered to in the book. When I buy a book I expect everything in it to be something I paid for. I don't need to be told I am getting a bonus here and a bonus there.
I was able to get through parts 1 and 2 of the book before I started just skimming the text. There really is a lot of good content in this little ebook masquarading as a POD special. The author qualifies as an infopreneur and she speaks from real world experience in much of what she talks about here. There are a ton of URLs that any infopreneur would probably like to get their hands on. Whether they will be good links in a year or two I don't know. But the raw content in this little tome saves it for me. Otherwise I would have really tanked its star rating. 3 stars!Internet Marketing For Free: The Guide: Internet Marketing To Go OverviewInternet Marketing for Free: The GUIDE will teach you what you need to know about internet marketing. You'll learn the latest internet marketing techniques:*Search engine optimization*Article Marketing*Blogging*Free Classifieds and Pay Per Clicks*Joint Ventures*Press Releases*Affiliate Program Management*ForumsThe best part is that each of these internet marketing techniques are completely free to do. All you need to do is spend a little time setting up your marketing campaigns. Apply these techniques consistently to your sites, and you'll drive all the targeted traffic to your sites you need, and you'll do it on a zero marketing budget.

Web Site Cookbook: Solutions & Examples for Building and Administering Your Web Site (Cookbooks (O'Reilly)) ReviewThe author says this is the book he wished he'd had when he started building websites ten years ago. I agree. The book is structured as a series of problems posed, with solutions, a discussion, and related links for follow-up. Some of the problem/solution match-ups certainly sometimes read like notes kept handy after some bit of knowledge was learned the hard way.
The book is written for those who make a living by designing, developing, maintaining, and marketing Web sites for themselves or other people. The exclusive focus is on the familiar world of LAMP -- Linux/Unix with Apache, MySQL, and PHP.
The author shares lots of handy code snippets (mostly PHP) to deal with technical issues but he does not neglect the soft skills, such as approaching the information architecture of a proposed site -- and marketing the finished one.
Addison goes into as much depth as is necessary to solve a problem and resists the temptation to go further. He clearly keeps up with best practices. I was impressed that his advice for a printer-friendly site is to use print media CSS. Most sites, even new ones, use more expensive and labor-intensive methods, like adding middle-layer software or creating separate content versions.
Quibble: the book does not mention, nor do the publisher's or author's sites offer any way to download the code snippets and the lists of related links. That is very odd for a book of this nature and I hope the author corrects the oversight for readers soon.Web Site Cookbook: Solutions & Examples for Building and Administering Your Web Site (Cookbooks (O'Reilly)) Overview
The total number of web pages today has been estimated at over 3 billion, spanning millions of individual websites. Not surprisingly, there is tremendous pressure on web developers and designers to remain current with the latest technologies.

The Web Site Cookbook from O'Reilly covers all the essential skills that you need to create engaging, visitor-friendly websites. It helps you with the practical issues surrounding their inception, design, and maintenance. With recipes that teach both routine and advanced setup tasks, the book includes clear and professional instruction on a host of topics, including:

registering domains
ensuring that hostnames work
managing the directory
maintaining and troubleshooting a website
site promotion
visitor tracking
implementing e-commerce systems
linking with sales sites

This handy guide also tackles the various elements of page design. It explains how to control a reader's eye flow, how to choose a template system, how to set up a color scheme, and more.

Typical of O'Reilly's "Cookbook" series, the Web Site Cookbook is written in a straightforward format, featuring recipes that contain problem statements and solutions.A detailed explanation then follows each recipe to show you how and why the solution works. This question-solution-discussion format is a proven teaching method, as any fan of the "Cookbook" series can attest to.

Regardless of your strong suit or your role in the creation and life of a website, you can benefit from the teachings found in the Web Site Cookbook. It's a must-have tool for advancing your skills and making better sites.

The Online Millionaire: Strategies for Building a Web-Based Empire on eBay and Beyond Review"The Internet is no longer an uncharted business frontier"... the first words I read.
The Online Millionaire is a how-to that zeroes in on this idea.
Serving up lessons on everything from eBay to building your own website author Amy Joyner backs up theory with stories from the front lines. Lacing each chapter with stories retold by online millionaires, Joyner's 101 approach (with sub-chapter headings like The Lowdown and How It Works) may not appeal to the Internet enthusiast, or anyone under the age of 16, but will be a breath of fresh air to the web-challenged. Joyner keeps it simple and paints with broad strokes . . . so for me - a member of the latter group, Millionaire helped break down the intimidating and self-imposed barriers I have towards the Internet. I couldn't build a website before reading this book and I probably won't anytime soon, but the curtain has been pulled and the mystery revealed.
The Online Millionaire: Strategies for Building a Web-Based Empire on eBay and Beyond OverviewThis book will show you how to become the next huge online success story"Your goal as an Internet entrepreneur should be to have a presence on everyWeb-based marketplace where your customers and potential customers shop. In The Online Millionaire, I'll introduce you to the most popular online channels and reveal the tricks of the trade for excelling in these marketplaces."You'll learn the ins and outs of selling on eBay, Amazon.com, Yahoo!, Overstock.com, and other auction marketplaces. You'll also read about how to use search engines and comparison-shopping sites to attract customers and drive sales. Plus, you'll find out how to go about building your own professional e-commerce store, along with proven ways to make money promoting other companies on your site."While it is still the 800-pound gorilla of e-commerce, as you'll realize by the timeyou reach the final pages of this book, online entrepreneurs now have many other options to reach buyers beyond eBay. I'll show you exactly how to launch your own multi-channel online marketing empire, regardless of the types of products you sell. You'll discover how each online channel works, what it costs to sell there, how to get started, and what products sell best."So, let's get started on this journey to creating a thriving online business that can put your company front and center on all of the world's top e-commerce sites."--From the Introduction

Pro Web 2.0 Mashups: Remixing Data and Web Services (Expert's Voice in Web Development) ReviewKudos to the author and publisher for this release.
This book is a tour de force of the subject of Mashups.
I was looking for a good book on this subject so that I could introduce it to students as part of an extra-curricular technology program in NYC and this book is perfect.
In a sentence, Mashups are created by taking data from one or more sources and making something new and useful from them.
In my opinion, the subject is very important because there is a vast amount of data that is available now. Today the challenge is not just finding data but putting to use. This book shows you how to do that.
The author's writing style is excellent, mixing theory and applications. The book is filled with hands on examples as well as references for research in each of the areas.
I believe that this book can be read by anyone interested in the subject, regardless of their technical background. For those that want to create Mashups without programming, this book shows you how. For those that want to delve into programming, everything that you need is covered including AJAX, PHP, various data formats and how to parse them, various Javascript libraries and more.
The book is laid out in four parts:
1. Remixing Information Without Programming
As the title suggests, the chapters in this section require no previous programming experience. The author walks through some specific examples, introduces terminology and analyzes how sites like Flickr and del.icio.us work so that you can get the most out of them. Tools such as Yahoo! Pipes (a browser-based visual application for Mashups and Remixing) are explored. Following along with the discussion the reader can put together a Mashup or Remix by simply understanding the concepts and using tools, but not having to delve into coding.
2. Remixing a Single Web Application Using Its API
For the person who wants to code, this part of the book jumps right in discussing the Flickr API, PHP usage, XML processing and more. From there the discussion moves to other APIs and using AJAX/Javascript widgets.
3. Making Mashups
This section starts by delving into the ProgrammableWeb website. Showing how to find what resources are available, studying existing Mashups via which APIs they use and how to go about creating new ones. From there XMLHttpRequest and Javascript libraries such as YUI are covered and a step-by-step example is given using the previously discussed techniques. Lastly, the author addresses issues around implementing Mashups on your site including standards, accessibility and your own API. I was glad to see these topics covered as sometimes in the haste of getting something online, they can be overlooked.
4. Exploring Other Mashup Topics
This final section of the book covers a large range of interesting topics such as Map-based Mashups, Social Bookmarking, Calendars, Online Storage, Desktop and Office Suites, Embeddable Data Formats and Searches.
As you can see, there's a lot of information covered in this book. In my opinion, everything that one could want on the subject and written in such a way that you want to keep reading, exploring and creating your own Mashups.
I highly recommend this book - so far, it has been my favorite read of 2008!Pro Web 2.0 Mashups: Remixing Data and Web Services (Expert's Voice in Web Development) OverviewMashups are hugely popular right now, a very important topic within the general area of Web 2.0, involving technologies such as CSS, JavaScript, Ajax, APIs, libraries, and server-side languages (such as PHP and ASP.NET.) This book aims to be the definitive tome on Mashup development, to stand in the middle of all the other, more API specific books coming out on Google Maps, Flickr, etc.The book shows you how to create real world Mashups using all the most poplar APIs, such as Google Maps, Flickr, Amazon Web Services, and delicious, and includes examples in multiple different server-side languages, such as PHP, Java, and .NET. It will have a large target audience, but still deliver an effective and engaging learning experience, regardless of the specific technologies the reader prefers to use.

Web Content RX: A Quick and Handy Guide for Writers, Webmasters, eBayers, and Business People Review
I breezed through "Web Content Rx" in an afternoon. The book's advice is as simple as its layout. Some of the points, however, are repetitive: use white space generously, utilize bullet points and write simply. Nevertheless, "Web Content Rx" could not have arrived at a better time. As a veteran journalist, English's book showed me that web writing is NOT writing for print publication. Thanks to the easy-to-understand manual, I was able to rewrite the text on my website, [...], almost as effortlessly as I was able to read this book. "Web Content Rx" was like a personal instructor that led me through the process and saved me hundreds of dollars that an expert web copywriter would have charged.

Head First WordPress: A Brain-Friendly Guide to Creating Your Own Custom WordPress Blog ReviewI absolutely love the Head First Series of books and, while they are not the most in depth and complex books on a subject, I consider them the most user friendly way to quickly and easily learn a challenging and difficult topic. So when I learned they were coming out with a book on Wordpress I quickly preordered it and then waited, and waited, and waited until...now. At last the book arrived and I'm not disappointed. For the average user (and let's face it, even the above average user) this is everything you need to know about how to install and use Wordpress for all but the most advanced website tasks.
While most people will choose to install Wordpress using the "one click" installation service offered by their hosting provider, the Headfirst book starts with a detailed description of how to download and install it the old fashioned way...manually. Even if you were to choose not to use the "one click" method (which I would advise against), reviewing this section gives you a good idea of the nuts and bolts of your Wordpress installation.
Next they cover the basics of posting and using images in your posts, including basic problems, troubleshooting and even covering file permissions. When it comes to changing your blogs appearance they do a very good job of describing templates, including third party templates, and also provide a solid overviews of HTML, PHP and CSS and how you can use it to modify your sight. Widgets are covered in depth as well.
The aspect of Wordpress I was most interested in learning more about was how to use it as a Content Management System (CMS) and the book covers the subject well, including a very good discussion on how to structure your website, how to modify your permalinks, set up the navigation bar and to use the visual editor.
There is an entire chapter devoted to embedding and handling video on the site which I felt was very important. Again, they covered not just how to embed video, but how to keep the video on your site organized and well structured, as well as various plugins that can be used to add extra functionality to the site. One part I didn't expect was the information on how to podcast, which I thought was interesting. This was covered in conjunction with advice on setting up syndication and using Feedburner. I personally have never done any podcasting, but it's nice to know that the information is there if I need it. I did appreciate the discussion on syndication however and thought it made getting set up on Feedburner easier and less confusing I remember it being.
There is a chapter devoted to Wordpress security which, having suffered from malware and virus attacks on my Wordpress blogs in the past, I thought was a good idea. One can never be too secure when it comes to the Internet and the advice in this chapter is solid.
If your new to Wordpress this is a excellent book to get you started. I highly recommend it. I found this more user friendly and readable than any other Wordpress book I have read or reviewed. If you use Wordpress but want to understand it and get more out of it I highly recommend this book as well, especially if you want to learn how to go into the code to modify the appearance of your site. IF you want to use Wordpress to it's full functionality get this book.Head First WordPress: A Brain-Friendly Guide to Creating Your Own Custom WordPress Blog Overview

Conversation and Community: The Social Web for Documentation ReviewAnne is a technical writer who has done a considerable amount of work with FLOSS Manuals in documenting the OLPC laptop, and is obviously well-versed in both open-source documentation and social media. The book is designed to give technical writers and other information developers an overview of the tools and techniques available now for documenting products and communicating with end-users through social media and other non-traditional methods.
As a technical writer and community manager, I am exactly the target market for this book, so it is no wonder that I think it is an excellent resource that is long overdue. What surprised me was the depth with which she covered her subjects, the extensive yet highly selective quality of references in the book, and the sheer number of strategies that I hadn't yet encountered even as a professional in this area.
The most important point Anne makes in the book is that documentation as we know it is changing dramatically. Practically all of the basic tenets of technical documentation are in question. Users depend far more often on advice from random strangers via mailing lists, community forums, and search engines than they do on the technical documentation that comes with the product. I have seen this to be true even for highly technical concepts and tools. This is not news to anyone who has ever used Google to find the answer to a technical question rather than looking in the docs, but it was fascinating to see that phenomenon addressed in such a way that my opinions of it were actually changed. Like many technical writers, I have a lingering fear that I will someday be obsolete and that my job of communicating technical issues to users of technology will be taken over by amateurs in ad-hoc communities. Anne gently reminds us that it is the quantity of information that is skyrocketing, not the quality, and that our jobs as technical communicators are more important than ever in making that information "findable", even if that means abandoning what we traditionally think of as documentation. What I took away from this aspect of the book was the overwhelming necessity to make human connections, even in technical documentation, an idea that resonates strongly with my own role as a community builder. Chapter 3 spells it out best as "Defining a Writer's Role with the Social Web".
The book catalogs the available tools and strategies from several different viewpoints based on documentation strategy---in other words, use cases---rather than simply providing an annotated list. Anne specifically points to references and in-the-trenches stories that underscore her points in a very effective way. The subject that brought me the most "aha!" moments was that of wikis. I use wikis on a daily basis, but there were certain aspects of them that I had overlooked. There were so many interesting references in all sections that I felt compelled to stop reading the book and follow them, which is not a criticism of the writing but rather of the sheer amount of information out there. The consistent, confident, professional tone kept me riveted to the book, but I am now going back over every page and following links.
I highly recommend this book to both technical communicators and those involved in social media and community. My copy is going straight to my boss' desk.Conversation and Community: The Social Web for Documentation OverviewConversation and Community: The Social Web for Technical Documentation, industry expert Anne Gentle's new book, brings the tools of the Social Web to technical documentation. She looks at the most important Web 2.0 tools, including blogs, wikis, micro-blogging, and syndication, and shows how they can be used to foster conversations and a community with your customers.Through examples and her own hard-won experience with these technologies, Gentle provides practical guidance for technical communicators, marketers, and anyone who wants to use the Social Web to interact with customers.
