Let's Connect: A Practical Guide for Highly Effective Professional Networking ReviewLet's Connect is the first book I would recommend to someone if they would like to learn how to build an effective and efficient networking strategy. After reading the book for the first time you have many networking tips you can immediately apply. After that the table of contents helps the reader very well to go back to the part of their networking strategy they want to improve further. Since I have been an avid networker for years, the tips about networking on an event were more a good reminder (and I even discovered some tips to fine-tune some of my skills). What was rather new for me was the Golden Triangle of networking and also networking via online business networking websites. They helped even me to take networking to a higher level !Let's Connect: A Practical Guide for Highly Effective Professional Networking OverviewNetworking becomes more and more important. But how do you go about it in practice? Let's Connect shows you how. These are but a few questions answered in "Let's Connect!" 1. How do I tap into the power of my network to reach my goals faster? 2. Which steps can I take to establish and maintain a relationship? 3. What is the best question in networking? 4. Is it really a small world and if so, what does that mean for me? 5. How do I prepare for a networking event? 6. How do I start and end a conversation at an event? 7. Which tools can I use to network more efficiently? 8. What is online networking and how do I go about it? 9. Which follow-up actions can I take? 10. How do I introduce two people at an event or via e-mail?

Buzz Marketing with Blogs For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) ReviewSince I've been blogging (http://www.twduff.com) for quite awhile, this is almost like reading a book to see if you're doing anything wrong. Still, Susannah Gardner does a good job with Buzz Marketing with Blogs For Dummies (Wiley).
Chapter List:
Part 1 - Getting Started with Business Blogs: Checking Out Business Blogs; Discovering the Buzz about Buzz Marketing; Building a Business Blog
Part 2 - Setting Up a Business Blog: Picking a Blog Solution; Setting Up a Hosted Blog; Taking Control with Independent Blog Software
Part 3 - Minding Blog Etiquette and Culture: Understanding Your Audience; Joining the Blogosphere; Avoiding Business No-Nos
Part 4 - Positioning Your Blog: Finding a Voice; Promoting Your Blog; Staying on the Right Side of the Law
Part 5 - Making the Most of Your Blog: Adding Value to a Blog; Making Money with a Blog; Going Beyond Blogs
Part 6 - The Part of Tens: Ten Dry-Spell-Breaking Ideas; Ten Traits of a Good Blogger; Ten Blogs You Should Know
Part 7 - Appendixes: Glossary; Using the Book Blog; Hosted and Independent Blog Solutions; How URLs Work; Case Studies; Index
Based on the title of this book, you'd probably assume that this is geared more for the business use of blogs. And in a significant sense, it is. But that's not to say that the serious personal blogger won't learn a number of things here. Gardner does a good job of taking the reader from "what is a blog" through the reasons they can be very important, and finally ends with the things you need to know to keep your blog fresh and inviting. You'd probably figure out many of these rules on your own, but the blogging world can be unforgiving. Make a mistake involving deception, and you may never get your audience back. Have your blog be nothing more than press releases, and no one will show up.
She also does a good job of bridging the theory and the practical. In addition to all the knowledge you need to understand blogging, she also takes you through some potential blogging software choices and shows how you'd use them to set up a blog. Granted, it's not a comprehensive instruction manual on how to install and configure any one blogging package, but the reader will get an idea of what it takes.
I also mentioned it's a good book for the serious personal blogger. I use my blog to share information with various audiences, but it's also a personal marketing tool. Therefore, many of the same "rules of the road" that she covers apply to me. I'm concerned about finding my voice and style, how to attract readers, and knowing whether or not my audience is getting value from my writings. While I've learned much of what she writes about on my own, I'd have come much further much faster if I had this book a couple years ago.
Good stuff, and highly practical. A very good selection to give to your boss if s/he wants to investigate the subject. Just make sure you explain that "For Dummies" isn't personal...Buzz Marketing with Blogs For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) OverviewIn this instant-communication world, buzz means business! And one of the greatest ways to get customers and potential customers buzzing about your business is with a Web log, commonly called a blog. Blogs can help you:
Introduce the people behind your business
Discuss relevant issues
Provide a clearinghouse for information and expertise
Show your business as a good corporate citizen
Support an exchange of ideas
Get honest feedback from your customers
Affect public opinion

If you're new to blogging, or if you know the mechanics of a blog but want some help refining and targeting yours, Buzz Marketing With Blogs For Dummies will get you going right away. An expert blogger shows you the ins and outs of putting together a professional-looking blog, walks you through the jargon, helps you decide what your blog should do, and even explains various software solutions. You'll find out how to:
Set up and maintain a blog, write in blogging style, and observe blogging etiquette
Define your audience and target your blog to reach them
Involve your customers, earn their trust, educate the public, and build community
Avoid possible legal pitfalls while keeping your blog interesting
Encourage contributions and links to your blog
Use images and design an eye-catching format
Optimize your blog for top search engine ratings, track your results, and measure your success

Written by Susannah Gardner, who has taught online journalism, directed multimedia efforts, and provided custom Web solutions to clients, Buzz Marketing With Blogs For Dummies even shares tips from the experts who establish and maintain some of the top-rated business blogs. You'll discover the secrets of success, how to spot and solve problems, what software can enhance your blogging life, and a whole lot more. It like having a staff of experts on call!

The Wild Idea Club: A Collaborative System to Solve Workplace Problems, Improve Efficiency, and Boost Your Bottom Line ReviewMarilyn, former school counselor
"The Wild Idea Club" presents an excellent format for brainstorming. While the book aimed at solving problems in the workplace the ideas would be equally valuable in an educational setting. Brainstorming is an effective way to discuss what to do about bullying, having more time for recess or lunch or getting along with teachers etc. Wish the book had been available when I was moderating group sessions with students. The Wild Idea Club: A Collaborative System to Solve Workplace Problems, Improve Efficiency, and Boost Your Bottom Line OverviewImagine a workplace where employees don't complain about problems but instead work together in idea-generating clubs to present positive solutions. The Wild Idea Club will help you get there there, by providing managers with an easy, step-by-step approach that harnesses the collective genius of their people to drive innovation, improve efficiency, and increase morale. In tough times like these--with managers facing increasing pressure to get more done with fewer people and less money--encouraging employees to work together to tackle tough issues on their own is not a luxury, but a survival tool. When people start seeing possibilities instead of problems--and can present their solutions to decision-makers who care--something amazing happens: They find themselves actually working together toward a common goal that benefits everyone and their organization. The Wild Idea Club is a guide, a method, and a tool that provides:* Everything a manager needs to get a Wild Idea Club (or three) up and running in his or her organization--and keep it going.* Tips and techniques to help your people generate ideas and select the best ones.* The best ways to capture, record, research, and follow through on the solutions generated by a Wild Idea Club.* Strategies to help your people pitch their ideas.* And much more.Written in a loose and light style, each chapter presents one facet of the concept, illustrated through a story based on real-life examples of Wild Idea Clubs in action. This book will help anyone learn exactly what's needed to create a club in his or her company, no matter its industry, size, or history.

Selling to the Government: What It Takes to Compete and Win in the World's Largest Market ReviewThis book is one of the best books I have read about federal sales and marketing; in fact, in anticipation of its release I actually pre-ordered a copy. As a consultant and trainer with over 25 years of government logistics, contracting, and sales & marketing experience, I find this book to be an accurate and informative guide to companies that are new to the federal marketplace, as well as for those that are currently selling in the federal marketplace. Each chapter is full of detailed information and steps to successfull federal business development, and ends with a comprehensive checklist of things to do (each checklist is "spot-on"!). Real life stories and experiences by the author, industry experts and successful company leaders make this a must have for any company that wants to strategically grow their federal sales business. Also the 36 page glossary of terms is a gem all by its self, as it describes commonly used government sales, contracting and marketing terms and acronyms that can overwhelm a federal busines novice. I only have a few books about government sales on my bookshelf and I have two of Mark Amtower's.

Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling ReviewThis book isn't as bad as some reviewers have written or as good as others have raved about. This book isn't for salespeople and because of that I was disappointed. This book is for professionals that have to "book themselves," such as public speakers, lawyers, accountants and the like. In some ways if you don't already know what this book teaches you better get a job. However, as the E-Myth points out there are plenty of people that are good at what they do but are clueless about how to get themselves business. If you fall into this category this is a good book to read and implement.
Port's book is long and at times wordy but a fun and easy read. There are diamonds here but you have to mine through a lot of ore to get at them. The book is well written and conversational. I can see why Mr. Port has a successful career. This book is perhaps a good first read if you're considering starting your own business or want to get more clients. For a solid and measurable program I recommend "Get Clients Now" by C. J. Hayden or "Get Business to Come to You" by Sarah and Paul Edwards.

Social Media Success: Practical advice and real world examples for social media engagement using social networking tools like Linkedin, Twitter, Blogging and more ReviewTime to come out from under your rock. This book is aimed squarely at business owners and people inside organizations who need to get up to speed and succeed. Janet has spend years in the trenches breaking it all down for beginners and making this seemingly overwhelming subject accessible to the point of mastery.
In Chapter 1, What is Social Media? You will get a great layman's definition of where these sweeping changes came from and what you need to know about them now in order to even discuss them intelligently. And in this first chapter you discover something very important: this is not some happy "feel good" book about social media as so many of them are. The author does not pull punches and tells it straight, and I for one really appreciated that. Disillusionment is a powerfully enervating force, but you get a straight deal in this book. Even in Chapter 1, she discusses social media backlash. Good stuff.
Chapter 2, Quelling the Naysayers, is super important for those who work in organizations where you know you have to "sell" social media to others and try to bring them on board. Making cogent and persuasive arguments for adopting a social media strategy may not exactly be your strength, but this chapter gives you the ammunition you need.
Chapter 3, Inbound Marketing vs Outbound, explains these two concepts very well. Understanding inbound marketing is key to online marketing success, because that's practically the only kind of marketing you can do online.
Chapter 4, It's Not About You, makes the important point of what kind of mindset and attitude to have in order to achieve social media success.
Chapter 5, Building Your Social Media Network, starts to get into the nuts and bolts of specific strategies and tactics that work. It also deals with a number people have been tossing around a lot, lately, called "Dunbar's Number." This is supposedly the limit of how many people you can know and remember.
Chapter 6, Finding Your Network, is about how to successfully connect with the right people in the vast space of social media and networks. In this chapter you'll learn about specific online and software tools you can use to target the correct topics in social media. This is something many people get wrong, and then they think social media itself is a waste of time. Nothing could be further from the truth; they just didn't know what they were doing.
Chapter 7, Choosing the Right Venues, gives you guidelines for deciding on sites and tools to use.
Chapter 8, Set Some Rules (Or at Least Some Guidelines) helps you craft your social media policies in a way that protect organizational interests while also creating maximum marketing benefit for the organization. This is another disaster area for most companies, but this info will steer you through it easily.
Chapters 9 - 15 Cover all the popular social media sites and general tools on the web and provides you with a winning game plan to tackle each one if it's right for your organization to use. Covered are Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, FriendFeed, video, and blogging.
Chapter 16, Creating Your Social Network, dives into what kind of information should be in social media profiles, talks about social bookmarking sites specifically (a subset of social media), and also discusses automation.
If there's a downside to this book, it's that it doesn't make it obvious the book is aimed at business people in organizations, rather than single-person businesses or non-business people. That doesn't mean they won't benefit, but there's information in the book that wouldn't apply to them.
The work I do online is similar to what Janet does, and in fact I know Janet because we've worked together on several projects. That's how I know that what she's saying in this book is good material. As I read it, I thought to myself there was much in it I could not have said better myself. Am I "biased?" I have nothing to gain from a positive review of this book. The book is simply worth your time.Social Media Success: Practical advice and real world examples for social media engagement using social networking tools like Linkedin, Twitter, Blogging and more OverviewSocial media can do amazing things. It can create an environment where your friends and followers and even your own customers become evangelists and act as a virtual sales, support and marketing teams. A Survival Guide to Social Media and Web 2.0 Optimization: Strategies, Tactics, and Tools for Succeeding in the Social Web Review
I loved it. What a book. These days there are many books on the market that address the basics or the theory regarding online marketiing and the Social Web. At this point I have trouble giving them super high review ratings because they don't bring much new to the table. One such book I recently reviewed was e-Riches 2.0: Next-Generation Marketing Strategies for Making Millions Online. As a result of my less than glowing review (even though I gave it 4 stars) I got hit with 5 neggies. Anyway, the instant book does not go too heavy on the basics or theory. It is a practical book for the do-it-yourselfer who wants to be lead by the hand on how set up their online presence using social media and Web 2.0 tools. It is well organized and well written and includes an introduction, 15 chapters, and 4 appendices as follows:
0. Introduction
1. Creating your social media strategy
2. Preparation
3. RSS feeds & blogs
4. Building a Wordpress powered Web site
5. Podcasting, vidcasting, & Webcasting
6. Social networking & micro-blogging
7. Social bookmarking & crowd-sourcing
8. Media communities
9. Widgets & badges
10. Social media newsrooms
11. More social tools
12. Pulling it all together
13. Looking to the future
14. Measuring your success
15. Conclusion
A. Installing Wordpress
B. Creating your own RSS feed
C. Building your own widget
D. Wordpress 2.7
Clearly the author is partial to Wordpress-dot-com. But there's nothing wrong with that. Wordpress offers great tools and it is a very nice service provider. Chapter 4 talks about Wordpress. Appendix A describes the process for setting up Wordpress. And Appendix D is kind of a supplemental blurb to Appendix A. I found the Introduction to be great. Chapter 1 on strategy was great, and chapters 12 through 15 were wonderful, too. Chapters 2-11 did a good job of providing tools and tactics to be used in building your online presence.
Building a meaningful and productive online presence is all about (1) interactivity, (2) sharing, & (3) collaboration. This book will tell you what you need to know to get involved online, build your presence, and interact, share and collaborate. 5 stars!A Survival Guide to Social Media and Web 2.0 Optimization: Strategies, Tactics, and Tools for Succeeding in the Social Web OverviewIt is no secret that the future of the Internet is the Social Web and that the future is this very instant. Millions of people and businesses are interacting, sharing and collaborating on social networking sites, media communities, social bookmarking sites, blogs and more. They are doing it right now, 24/7, and you and your business want to be a part of this powerful movement with as professional and efficient a presence as possible while keeping your expenses minimal. This book will show you how to use the tools of Web 2.0 to build a successful Web presence. From Squidoo to YouTube, Facebook to WordPress, wikis to widgets, blogs to RSS feeds, business owners, authors, publishers, students, PR and marketing professionals can learn to apply and integrate these tools by themselves. Gone are the days of relying on Web developers! This book arms you with the nuts and bolts of the new, open-source Internet through hands-on, real-world examples. Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling ReviewMichael Port begins his book practically: "[T]here may be two simple reasons why you don't serve as many clients as you'd to today. You either don't know what to do to attract and secure more clients or you know what to do but you're not actually doing it" (p. xxvii).
In the pages that follow, he unpacks his "Booked Solid System" to which he ascribes the power to solve both of those stated problems.
Contrasting "old school" and "new school" marketing methods, he writes, "[Many] have come to believe that marketing and selling is pushy and self-centered and borders on sleazy ... You must never fall into the typical client-snagging mentality. If you do, you'll operate in a mentality of scarcity and shame as opposed to one of abundance and integrity" (p. xxix).
Questions to ask yourself:
How can I be fully self-expressed in my work to create meaning for me and those whom I serve?
How can I work only in the areas of my greatest strengths and talents so that I can shine?
How many relationships with people of purpose did I make and deepen?
How can I better listen to and serve my ideal clients?
How can I wow people with substance?
How can I overdeliver on my promises to my clients?
How can I cooperate with other professionals to create more abundance?
Port's claim is a large one: "If you keep asking yourself these questions, if you set a solid foundation for your business, build trust and credibility within your marketplace, and use the seven core self-promotion strategies [offered later in the book], you'll be booked solid in no time" (p. xxx).
His layout of information consists of 3 modules: Your Foundation, Building Trust and Credibility, and The Seven Core Self-Promotion Strategies.
Each of the modules has something worthy to note, but I found module 1 to be the most informative and helpful - especially chapter 2: "Why People Buy What You're Selling."
He counsels, "Marketing and sales isn't about trying to convince, coerce, or manipulate people into buying your services. It's about putting yourself out in front of, and offering your services to, those whom you are meant to serve - people already looking for your services" (p. 17).
Those who are already looking for your services are those who should make up your target market. It's in this section where Port shines. He says, "Your target market's urgent needs [the things they would like to move away from] and compelling desires [the things that they would like to move toward] prompt them to go in search of you and your services ... You must offer what your potential clients want to buy, not you want to sell or think they should want to buy" (p. 22).
What will cause someone to purchase the service that you are selling?
" [I]f your potential clients are going to purchase your service and products, they must see them as investable opportunities; they must feel that the return they receive is greater than the investment they made.
... This return will come in different forms, depending on what you offer, but the return is almost always financial or [24] emotional.
... Rather than talking about what you do, focus instead on clear, specific, and detailed solutions that solve your clients' problems" (pp. 23-24).
The next biggest issue that Port addresses is how we talk about what we do - commonly referred to as "The Elevator Speech." This is important because, in Port's words, "A primary reason that many service professionals fail to build thriving businesses is that they struggle to articulate - in a clear and compelling way - exactly what solutions and benefits they offer" (p. 47). Port offers guidance and examples for a long version, a mid-length version, and a short version by mixing and matching your answers to some exercises that you've already worked through. Those exercises include: Summarizing your target market in one sentence, identifying the three most critical problems faced by that market, telling how you solve these problems (the more unique the better), mentioning the most dramatic ("Wow!") results that your clients have experienced, and including the benefits your clients receive" (see p. 51).
This wisdom alone is worth the price of the book. The rest is just bonus as far as I'm concerned!Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling OverviewThe new edition of the bestselling business development guide

Duct Tape Marketing: The World's Most Practical Small Business Marketing Guide ReviewThere are a series of books that I keep on a special - quite small - bookshelf. I try to reread each of them every year or so. While I've gotten to the point that I know what they say, but each time I go through one of them I get an idea or two to try in promoting my business.
This book has made it to that shelf.
It got a decision to be put there while I was reading it at the book store. On page 24 there's a story of a lady wanting to sell helmets in a state with no helmet law. So she started stocking children's helmets. When riders told her they didn't want a helmet she asked, 'What about one for the child, they aren't old enough to make that decision for themselves.' What daddy could resist? Then a month later they were back for a helmet for themselves after the kid was asking, 'Daddy, where's your helmet." So a sale for Daddy, little Jimmy and little Suzie. Three sales for one question.
Then on page 83 there's the advice:
Shoot your web designer if they:
Suggest flash intro pages
Suggest frame pages
Suggest templates.
Yes, Yes, Yes!
One point about the web I do not agree. Learn to do your web site yourself. You may hire a designer to do it at first, but then maintain it yourself. It isn't hard and you won't be nickled and dimed to death over every small change you want.
I could go on, but I'm sure you get the idea. All of his ideas won't be applicable, but if you get a good idea or two each time you read through it, the book is worth it's cost many times over.Duct Tape Marketing: The World's Most Practical Small Business Marketing Guide OverviewDuct Tape Marketing is the small business marketing road map - A collection of proven tools and tactics woven together in a step-by-step marketing system that shows small business owners exactly what to do to market and grow their businesses.
