Securing the Borderless Network: Security for the Web 2.0 World ReviewI am giving this four stars because in June 2010, this really helps me see the big picture from a seasoned tech executive, Harvard MBA's point of view. Through no fault of his own, the manuscript will age fast and be less valuable fast. For instance, chapter 6 doesn't have the iPad however, it does have the Apple Newton from 1993. There is a lot of history built into Gillis's research and I found that really helpful, we have to know where we have been to understand where we are going. If you need to understand the emerging trends in security and computing in general and it is still 2010, I recommend you buy this book. If it is later than 2010 and it is not second edition or updated, ask around for a copy to borrow. Outcome-Based Marketing New Rules for Marketing on the Web ReviewJohn is one of the most savvy marketers I know. His sage advice is field focused and road tested. He's been in the trenches of both technical marketing as well as years of helping small business find the on-ramp to using the Internet to gain visibility for their brand and products.
The approach of this book is comprehensive yet modular -- you don't have to read through the whole book to begin to get value from what you've learned from each section. John breaks it out into easy-to-consume "chunks" that teach you not only the concepts of Internet marketing, but also the principles of why you do these things. Then he takes you through the how of implementing. The book is particularly well arranged with helpful navigational tools to let you know where you are and summary comments at the end of each section to reinforce what you've learned.

Cisco Networking Simplified (2nd Edition) ReviewEverything about Cisco Networking Simplified screams accessibility: the landscape layout, the softback cover, the illustrations drawn without a ruler that literally take the sharp edges off of computers, servers, and switches (router icons, fortunately, are already round). A note on the cover indicates for the curious that the book is in full color. Each short chapter is broken into "at-a-glance" subsections on each topic, headed "Why Should I Care?" and "What Are the Problems to Solve?"
This book is clearly written for two types of people: executives from a non-technical background who get flustered when speaking to network engineers, and networking novices looking for a friendly introduction to the subject before they begin serious study for, say, the CCNA.
When I first opened Cisco Networking Simplified, I was a bit put off by the intensity with which I felt the authors and illustrator were trying to convince me just how down-to-Earth they are. The organization of the book is such that it's so easy to flip through, the pithy explanations so easy to digest, that one might grow quickly suspicious that here is a book designed more to make the reader feel at ease than to actually teach her anything.
But one would be wrong. CNS is a good basic reference book. It's short because it sticks to the essentials. It's weirdly-inked illustrations do make the concepts clearer. And the friendly tone never gets smarmy. On the contrary, Maggiora and Doherty anticipate a newcomer's reaction to the material well enough to know when to be terse, and when to insert whimsical asides. The unofficial eighth (political) and ninth (technical religion) layers of the OSI model and the use of ISDN to mean It Still Does Nothing are fun tidbits, well-placed, and perhaps even useful as mnemonic devices. The paragraph explaining that "routers switch and switches route," is appropriately illustrated with two people scratching their heads. That the authors make room for "Algorhyme," Radia Perlman's poem describing the Spanning Tree Algorhythm (which she also wrote), shows that they know the difference between cute and distracting, and cute and relevant.
There are some problems, though. For example, the discussion of classful addresses is outdated. The class A, B, and C system is presented as the solution to a problem caused by unanticipated Internet growth. That may have once been true, but now the time when the class system was itself perceived as the next wave of that problem has already come and gone (gone, because outside isolated or masqueraded networks, class addressing has been replaced with CIDR). An executive who reads this book and then asks his engineers whether the company has been assigned a class A, B, or C address isn't going to get a lot of respect. A more serious problem is the confusing definition of the term DCE. On page 209, it's "data circuit-terminating device." On page 210, it's "data communications equipment." The first definition is more popular according to a google search, but makes less sense (where does the "E" come from?). Perhaps both definitions are somehow valid, but in a book like this, it shouldn't be the reader's job to figure out which one. And IDSN gets two detailed pages with illustrations, while the more popular (in the U.S.) DSL gets little more than a paragraph.
Also, to call this book Cisco Networking Simplified is not really accurate. A better title might have been: Cisco Presents: Networking Simplified. Cisco has no special claim to, say, IP addressing, which is discussed in some detail. Of course, to write a basic networking book without discussing IP would be silly, and Cisco makes a lot of products that deal with IP addressing. But so do a lot of other companies.
In short, I recommend this book (three of five stars), but with caveats. Technically-minded people who already have some experience in the networking field will probably be put off by the coloring book look and feel (but then, it wasn't written for them). Novices who are reading this book as the first step on their way to certification may find that, ironically, it provides much more information on certain subjects (voice-over IP, for example) than may be sought. It's hard to imagine anyone reading this book straight through of their own volition. It's a beginner's reference. Me 2.0: Build a Powerful Brand to Achieve Career Success ReviewThis book is one of the few recent books that covers personal branding. I feel like this was a timely book in the fact that the importance of personal branding is growing day by day.
The first few pages of the book are riddled with strong references, including Marshall Goldsmith, Keith Ferrazzi, Tim Sanders, David Meerman Scott, and others.
I also thought that one of the main strengths of the book was that it was well structured. The author uses four distinct steps (discover, create, communicate, and maintain) as a part of personal branding.
The target audience of this book is Generation Y. Many of the examples reference college, internships, getting your first job, etc. I am glad that the book is targeting to a specific audience, but unfortunately I felt that the material was less useful to Generation X, Baby Boomers, and other generations.
That being said, the author tells an upbeat, yet pragmatic story about the importance of personal branding. It reads fairly quickly, and I'm sure almost everyone will pick up a few tips and tricks about how to improve their own unique brand.Me 2.0: Build a Powerful Brand to Achieve Career Success Overview

If you are serious about finding a new career opportunity, this book is required reading. Don't do another thing at all in your job search until you have this book in your hands and read it. It is better that you do nothing at all than to do something without David Perry's guidance, coaching, wisdom and insight.
Do you want a larger paycheck sooner rather than later? If so, invest in yourself. Buy this book. Not buying it will probably cost you thousands of dollars. Buying it will cost you about $[...] (with shipping). If you had the opportunity to buy David Perry a Starbucks, sit down with him for 3 hours and pick his brain, I bet you would do it. That is what you are doing here...having a virtual cup of coffee with the best in the business in job hunting. But it gets even better...with his book you have all of the notes from that meeting, in writing, to review and use over and over again.
Now, with that having been said, I am sitting here at my desk eagerly downloading my preview copy of Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 3.0. WHY?
I am a "headhunter." I do not call myself a recruiter. I do not call myself an "executive search" consultant. I PLACE PEOPLE into COMPANIES. I help companies "hire to win." I am 100% commissioned in what I do. If I do NOT place my candidate into an open position, I don't get paid. I don't eat! I am in the JOB HUNT BATTLE EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE!
Thus, what I do MUST WORK! All too many job hunting books are written by HR professionals and career counselors who will get their salary or get their "career counseling consulting fee" regardless of whether you get hired or not.
SO WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH GUERRILLA 3.0?? In one word, "EVERYTHING"!
I started my "headhunting" business in 2003. I was very good at it. In 2005, I saw Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters in the book store. I read the bio and learned that David Perry is a "recruiter" so I figured I would buy a copy and peruse it. After just a few pages, I was highlighting, paper clipping, taking notes and devouring the book. The very next day I was in the office reshaping the way I did business.
*I learned how to write powerful cover letters and send them to my clients on my candidate's behalf
*I honed my voice mail scripts
*I started role playing mock interviews with the candidates I presented
*...and the list could go on...
The main point is I learned how to truly differentiate myself as a recruiter. I learned how to be a "guerrilla" and that is when I can say I went from being a recruiter to being a "headhunter." More importantly, I learned how to powerfully differentiate the candidates I represented so THAT THEY WOULD GET HIRED!!! And they did. I was a top 200 recruiter in the MRI Network out of over 8000 recruiters for 3 years in a row. GUERRILLA WORKS for getting hired.
In 2009, I started building my firm and started hiring people to work for me. The first book I went to buy for training my new people was Guerrilla and to my dismay, it was "out of print." I panicked. But with a few clicks, I quickly discovered that, in just another few weeks, Guerrilla 2.0 was coming out. I pre-ordered 7 copies.
When the book landed in my office, we all did a deep dive. That year our entire recruiting firm, with rookies, billed close to a million dollars by PLACING PEOPLE.
So you can see why I can't wait to read 3.0.

First, some background notes. This book has its roots in the work of an organization that has received generous funding support from Microsoft, called The Social Media Research Foundation. The application itself is "a spreadsheet add-in," that is designed to support macro-views of networks for the purpose of "discovery and exploration." The Microsoft-funded research team built this tool to fit inside the user's copy of Excel in either Office 2007or 2010.
Does it work? Well, users say that it "makes the creation of social network maps as easy as making a pie chart."
Users can use NodeXL to make maps of public social media conversations based upon topics that matter to them. These maps of connections between people who mention a product, or a brand or some other key word or phrase, can reveal to users key positions and clusters in the crowded social networks. In this manner, users can zero-in on individuals who discuss a topic as they appear to be the "center" of the display and often are one of the key and influential members of the population being analyzed as well as have the ability to measure changes over time.

Branding Yourself: How to Use Social Media to Invent or Reinvent Yourself (Que Biz-Tech) Review
I loved it. The title was good, but I thought it would have been better if "self promotion" had been included in it somewhere. Quite a while ago, back in 1997, I purchased and read 101 Ways To Promote Yourself: Tricks Of The Trade For Taking Charge Of Your Own Success which was all about self promotion and devoted just one chapter of 101 chapters to the Internet. I still love that book since so much of the theory behind it is still applicable today. However, the way to do things now is on the Internet, not through the print media and snail mail. That's where the instant book being reviewed comes in.
Branding yourself is a neat book. It is written by two guys who decided they wanted to get better known, better thought of, and develop connections or relationships with people so they would not get pidgeon holed in one opportunity and be stuck there since they don't know all that many people. While it is great to brand yourself so you have something to promote, personally I am turned off by the term "branding." I like to think more in terms of focusing on something so you can ultimately be considered an expert or authority on what you do. Yes, this is branding, but it's also a strategy regarding how to go about making something successful whether it be a person, a business, or something else that can be marketed to make money.
The focus of this book is to help someone better promote THEMSELVES. However, most of what is discussed here is equally applicable to promoting a professional services firm or other similar small business. And much of what is discussed here can be adapted so the marketer of any small business can grow his or her company very well on a limited budget.
Probably the main reason I liked this book so much was the approach the authors took to present social media marketing to the reader. Social media marketing has been around for a while now, and if a book simply lists tools and techniques the social media marketer can use, then I don't rate such a book very highly when I review it these days. But when the book feels more like a case study as this one does, it is novel and definitely worth a read. Maybe in a few years it won't be considered such hot stuff, but today it's a pretty good book.
The only downer I'll include in this review is that I would have liked the book better if Chapter 6 on Facebook had been left out. I'm not a fan of Facebook. I think it is overrated as a marketing tool, and I don't think it really ads that much to a marketing effort. But it is a popular Web site and I suppose to leave it out of the discussion when talking about building an Internet Presence would be bad.

This book is aimed squarely at business owners and people inside organizations who need to get up to speed and succeed. Janet has spend years in the trenches breaking it all down for beginners and making this seemingly overwhelming subject accessible to the point of mastery.
In Chapter 1, What is Social Media? You will get a great layman's definition of where these sweeping changes came from and what you need to know about them now in order to even discuss them intelligently. And in this first chapter you discover something very important: this is not some happy "feel good" book about social media as so many of them are. The author does not pull punches and tells it straight, and I for one really appreciated that. Disillusionment is a powerfully enervating force, but you get a straight deal in this book. Even in Chapter 1, she discusses social media backlash. Good stuff.
Chapter 2, Quelling the Naysayers, is super important for those who work in organizations where you know you have to "sell" social media to others and try to bring them on board. Making cogent and persuasive arguments for adopting a social media strategy may not exactly be your strength, but this chapter gives you the ammunition you need.
Chapter 3, Inbound Marketing vs Outbound, explains these two concepts very well. Understanding inbound marketing is key to online marketing success, because that's practically the only kind of marketing you can do online.
Chapter 4, It's Not About You, makes the important point of what kind of mindset and attitude to have in order to achieve social media success.
Chapter 5, Building Your Social Media Network, starts to get into the nuts and bolts of specific strategies and tactics that work. It also deals with a number people have been tossing around a lot, lately, called "Dunbar's Number." This is supposedly the limit of how many people you can know and remember.
Chapter 6, Finding Your Network, is about how to successfully connect with the right people in the vast space of social media and networks. In this chapter you'll learn about specific online and software tools you can use to target the correct topics in social media. This is something many people get wrong, and then they think social media itself is a waste of time. Nothing could be further from the truth; they just didn't know what they were doing.
Chapter 7, Choosing the Right Venues, gives you guidelines for deciding on sites and tools to use.
Chapter 8, Set Some Rules (Or at Least Some Guidelines) helps you craft your social media policies in a way that protect organizational interests while also creating maximum marketing benefit for the organization. This is another disaster area for most companies, but this info will steer you through it easily.
Chapters 9 - 15 Cover all the popular social media sites and general tools on the web and provides you with a winning game plan to tackle each one if it's right for your organization to use. Covered are Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, FriendFeed, video, and blogging.
Chapter 16, Creating Your Social Network, dives into what kind of information should be in social media profiles, talks about social bookmarking sites specifically (a subset of social media), and also discusses automation.
If there's a downside to this book, it's that it doesn't make it obvious the book is aimed at business people in organizations, rather than single-person businesses or non-business people. That doesn't mean they won't benefit, but there's information in the book that wouldn't apply to them.
The work I do online is similar to what Janet does, and in fact I know Janet because we've worked together on several projects. That's how I know that what she's saying in this book is good material. As I read it, I thought to myself there was much in it I could not have said better myself. Am I "biased?" I have nothing to gain from a positive review of this book.
