Me Paradox: Gain the Social Business Edge ReviewMe Paradox is the right blend of advice and theory. It is an inspirational book for those seeking to get ahead in business. At times, the book is light and quick, with practical advice for excelling. It includes charts and practice examples to help guide you towards achieving your goals. But Me Paradox is also a philosophical work that contemplates the future of the business world as influenced by social media and the way it has been perceived and embraced. While the book is light and quick at times, it doesn't fail to delve into complicated ideas. And when it does delve, it does so in a clear and concise way.
The title Me Paradox refers to author Chae J. Pak's innovative idea for approaching social business. It is an idea that is hard to explain, but not as hard to understand once you read the book, and it has to do with putting others before yourself so that you, yourself, see gains. Pak has written from a wealth of experience and a wide breadth of research. His ideas are insightful, useful, and valuable to a world that is becoming as much about online communication as about in-person communication.
Me Paradox: Gain the Social Business Edge OverviewBy helping readers manage their online reputations, Me Paradox: Gain the Social Business Edge illustrates over 50 key activities that help them earn more money, more autonomy, more respect, more knowledge, more opportunities, and all things that differentiate their careers. Published by New World Press, Me Paradox uses a new concept - the Paradox of Me - to help readers realize that 'one single action has infinite ramifications." As a paradox, the concept of the Me Paradox avoids strict definition. Instead, it is an underlying theme in the book that helps guide readers to their ultimate ends: more fulfilling successes.Roughly, the paradox is about seeing ourselves as a composite of how others are connected to us. If this sounds a little too complicated, that's OK; Me Paradox helps readers gain the social business edge by taking complex and abstract ideas, and putting them into easy-to-read, workable notions. As an example, the Online Reputation Lifecycle breaks down aspects of online social interaction into its parts: engagement, presence, and networks. The book also provides real-life examples, best practices reviews, and personal assessment exercises to give readers hands-on references about themselves and their online practices.Me Paradox is the first definitive book on social business using online reputation management and the catalyst that activates regard. The book is unique in that it isn't as concerned about presenting absolute truths as it is about exploring causes and effects. An example of this is how the book details how information isn't always enough; information can become knowledge, which can then become wisdom, both of which are even more valuable than information alone. The book is real and useful, and it gives the power of action over to the reader - you don't have to live by the book, but if you take its suggestions to heart, you may reap big benefits.Me Paradox is brave enough to tackle abstract ideas, like the Economy of Regard, gift giving and social capital. And it covers these ideas clearly, alongside practical, inspirational advice for managing yourself in the online social territory ' all in the name of your success.

Small Business Smarts: Building Buzz with Social Media ReviewYou always hear about the importance of social media in business. However, many small business owners just don't think it is necessary or think it's for them. This book clears up the questions behind the importance of incorporating social media into your small business marketing and advertising efforts in a simple and fun way.
It's no secret that the one thing everyone carries around these days is a cell phone and access to information is at their fingertips. This book helps you understand how to capitalize on that and not miss out on an opportunity to communicate with your customer in a practical way.
Small Business Smarts: Building Buzz with Social Media Overview
Social networking plus small business is a slam dunk! Small Business Smarts: Building Buzz with Social Media explains why that's so and helps small business owners decide whether social media tools are right for them. Assuming the answer is yes, the book offers concrete advice and implementation suggestions that make using tools to start building word-of-mouth quick and easy.

Built around actual success stories from small businesses, such as the Roger Smith Hotel, Dutch Bros. Coffee, Cafe Yumm, and the Tattered Cover Bookstore, the book illustrates how different social media can help achieve different business goals, how the Internet can be used to "listen" to customers, how networks and relationships are built online for both B2C and B2B, and how effective messages can generate awareness and attract customers. Measurement strategies and techniques for a social media audit are included. For the complete novice, step-by-step instructions on getting started with popular social media applications are provided as well.

Friction is Fiction: The Future of Content, Media & Business (Black & White Edition) Reviewand Gerd has a lot to say about it. Friction is Fiction is a collection of essays and blogs by media futurist Gerd Leonhard. An excellent introduction to the new paradigm shift in digital media. If you are looking to make sense of the canary in the coal mine collapse of the Compact Disc and the mainstream record company business model Leonhard explains not only what happened but what will continue to happen to content providers and users of music, film, video, books, newspapers and all forms of media. Rather than lamenting the loss of old business models Leonhard focuses primarily on the excitement and opportunities presented by the current media revolution. He is not the only proselytizer of the new culture of free but one of my favorites because of the lack of hyperbole and unnecessary drama. I also appreciate his global perspective and positive attitude. Highly recommended.
Friction is Fiction: The Future of Content, Media & Business (Black & White Edition) OverviewFuturist and Thought-Leader Gerd Leonhard (www.mediafuturist.com) shares his thoughts on the Future of Content, Media and Business. 'Friction is Fiction' presents a constantly updated compilation of Gerd's best essays, writings and most popular blog posts. The central meme is that the Internet has completely disrupted the traditional notion of generating higher income by simply taking advantage of possible friction points and hurdles within transactions or business processes, i.e. by controlling the 'people formerly known as consumers'. The Future is all about winning the trust, and turning attention into revenues. This is the low-cost, black & white version of the book - if you want the full-color version please go to http://gerd.fm/cmrfB1

Social Lawyers: Transforming Business Development, 2010 ed. ReviewI've known Jayne for quite a few years, so my expectations for this work were high. Nevertheless, they were exceeded. The book is packed with actionable advice and covers the "how to" as well as they "why to." It would be useful for any business professional hoping to understand the proper use of social media in business development. There are a few typos and editing issues, but they do not detract from the valule of this small, yet densely packed book. Because it is published by a specialty house, it's a little more expensive than you might like, but it is completely worth it. Buy it and USE IT!Social Lawyers: Transforming Business Development, 2010 ed. OverviewThis book presents information about social technologies, how they impact your practice and affect client interests. Practical tips and use cases regarding online networking, blogging, podcasting, video-casting and social networks are set forth in an objective format, and a business development approach is offered for leveraging these emerging technologies. Managing Online Forums: Everything You Need to Know to Create and Run Successful Community Discussion Boards ReviewI had the opportunity to read through this book over the last week, and I'm just floored by how much good information it's got in it. This book is years of Patrick's experiences running successful forums (22 forums now, I believe!) and all the tips, tricks and wisdom he's picked up during those years. I ran a moderately successful forum years ago, and would have saved myself months of headache and heartache had I the information in this book at my fingertips back then.
The book is definitely opinionated - these are Patrick's recommendations based on his experiences, and it shows. His voice is natural, and the wording is down to earth. This isn't some theoretical treatise, but a 'from the trenches' view of what works, what doesn't, and why.
The book includes many sample forms which have example language to use for welcoming members to your forum, working with moderators, dealing with abusive or disruptive visitors, and much more. They're all available on the book's website too, so you don't need to retype it all in, but can quickly customize them to fit your own needs .
The one thing lacking in this book is that it doesn't go in to much detail about the major forum packages out there, so the reader who is just starting out will have to do some more research as to what packages have which features discussed in the book. Having said that, this keeps the focus of the book more on the human/people side of internet forums, and doesn't devolve in to a technical manual. I would have preferred a small feature comparison of the big forum systems out there, but I'm more of a technically-inclined person to begin with. If you're not technically inclined, you likely won't even notice the information not there.
Bottom line: if you're thinking of starting a web-based community, or have one and aren't sure how to manage it, this book is a must-have. It will save you weeks, if not months, of getting up to speed and being as effective as possible with your forums.
Managing Online Forums: Everything You Need to Know to Create and Run Successful Community Discussion Boards OverviewEvery day, millions of users log on to their favorite online forums and interact with others to get advice and discuss everything from the latest news and trends to their hobbies, professions, and whatever else strikes their fancy. Administrators have to lead these communities, deal with difficult users, and choose moderators. Legal constraints, spammers, and technical issues can turn the excitement of running an online community into chaos. With the right guidance, however, running forums can be a pleasure. Patrick O'Keefe has spent years developing and managing online communities. Now, he shows readers how to make the right decisions about every aspect of their forums, including:' choosing a name and domain name' picking the right software' deciding on user options like avatars and private messaging' setting guidelines and dealing with violators' ensuring that posts stay on topic' settling online disputes among users' involving users and keeping the site interestingManaging Online Forums is the one book that shows site owners and administrators how to create a safe and entertaining community that users will return to again and again.

Guerrilla Marketing on the Front Lines: 35 World-Class Strategies to Send Your Profits Soaring (Guerilla Marketing Press) ReviewI got this book a few weeks ago. I read it in 30 minutes, which was easy because the type is big and there is a lot of space between the paragraphs and more importantly, there is almost nothing to be learned from this book if you have read any other book on marketing... ever.
So I put it down and went back to Amazon to see if I had misread the ratings the book had. I could not understand why 11 people would give it 5 stars. I shop Amazon specifically because of the rating system and I wanted to know how 11 people could possibly have given this thing more than 2 stars at most. Not only is it sophomoric, it seems nobody cared about its publication either; there are typos and missing words all over. Now here is the interesting part: 10 of the reviewers who gave it 5 stars did so in a 6 day period in Sept 2008 right after the publication date. After that there is a 3 star review from someone who actually addressed the contents of the book and then one more review after that. And if you look closely, only that one 3-star review actually addresses the contents of the book, the others all say almost the same thing - please read them closely - every single one of them could have been written off the book jacket. So what we have here is a book that teaches nothing, that is being promoted in Guerrilla fashion by his friends who all gave it 5 star reviews in the first week the book shipped. Out of curiosity, I quickly looked at what other books the first 3 reviewers had reviewed, and saw that all 3 had only reviewed this one book except that #3 had also given 5 stars to a book by reviewer #1.
If the book was any good I would say who cares, but it is not a 5 star book. Luckily I was able to return my book, because even an orchestrated effort like this to fool us Amazon shoppers into BUYING the book cannot stop us from returning it.Guerrilla Marketing on the Front Lines: 35 World-Class Strategies to Send Your Profits Soaring (Guerilla Marketing Press) OverviewLet 35 World Class Guerrilla Marketing Coaches Teach You Their Time-tested Tactics and Strategies for Getting New Customers and Turning Them Into Your Most Enthusiastic Fans! Crowdsourcing: High-impact Strategies - What You Need to Know: Definitions, Adoptions, Impact, Benefits, Maturity, Vendors ReviewPURCHASE NOT RECOMMENDED.
You might of heard the term - regifting. Regifting refers to the action of giving a gift one has received to someone else. There is an ongoing debate about the appropriateness of regifting and you even might disagree with the practice. That's until you remember your participation and relief in relaying your great Aunt's dreaded fruit cake during the holiday season to someone else.
The publishing industry has their own version of regifting. It's known as republishing. Republishing is when a book's content is slightly modified then released with a different title, cover and/or author. From casual observation to the consumer it appears to be a "new" book. In reality, except for a few minor cosmetic tweaks the content remains the same.
Unknowingly paying to purchase a republished book is not a welcome surprise.
The book being reviewed is entitled:
Crowdsourcing: High-impact Strategies - What You Need to Know: Definitions, Adoptions, Impact, Benefits, Maturity, Vendors
by Kevin Roebuck
Publisher: Tebbo
ISBN-10: 1743046421
The book is a republished version of:
The Crowdsourcing Handbook - Everything you need to know about Crowdsourcing
by Jason Brand
Publisher: Tebbo
ISBN-10: 1743040954
Except for a few minor tweaks - title change, cover change, different author name - it's EXACTLY the same book.
It must be stated that it's the same poor quality book with the same recommendation - PURCHASE NOT RECOMMENDED.
Which brings to mind the saying - Even if you put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig.
Adding [financial] insult to injury ...
The original book entitled - "The Crowdsourcing Handbook - Everything you need to know about Crowdsourcing" - purchase price is $19.95.
This new republished book with EXACTLY the same contents - purchase price is $48.66.

On with my republished review of this republished book ...
Let's start with the face page disclaimer:
The content within this book was generated collaboratively by volunteers. Please be advised that nothing found here has necessarily been reviewed by people with the expertise required to provide you with complete, accurate or reliable information. Some information in this book may be misleading or simply wrong.
How can the book be "...your ultimate resource for Crowdsourcing" when no checking has been done of the validity or reliability of the information contained within it?
Enough said on that.
It starts with an anemic six page introduction to crowdsourcing of which two pages are citation notes/references.
....and continues to go down hill from there.
The book lists about 80 "articles" in the table of contents contained in 209 pages. Which means content on each article averages a little over two pages in length. A number of articles are a single page.
The majority of the topics are crowdsourcing vendors (Amazon Mechanical Turk, CloudCrowd, CloudFlower, InnoCentive), crowdsourcing contests ( DARPA Grand Challenge, Netflix Prize), and miscellaneous topics (Ricky McCormick's encrypted notes).
The book is NOT a how-to manual, tutorial or reference guide on crowdsourcing.
The book is a scattered compilation of crowdsourcing topics with a very brief synopsis written on each.

Age of Conversation 3: It's Time to Get Busy ReviewMost business books take 200 pages to explain one basic notion. Not Age of Conversation. Since this is a collaborative book by over 170 people, pretty much every page contains a stand-alone insight. This is a perfect book to pick up in lost moments to quickly read a couple of thought-starting entries. Even better, because the 170 marketing, PR and communications experts actually communicated whiel they were writing this, after a while it turns out the stand-alone insights are all connected to form an interesting collection where many ideas build one greater story. Very cool.Age of Conversation 3: It's Time to Get Busy OverviewFollowing the success of the first two editions, Age of Conversation 3: It's Time to Get Busy! again kick-starts the discussion about how the global marketing landscape is changing. With over 170 of the world's leading marketers, writers, thinkers and creative innovators contributing chapters, this collaborative work investigates the roles that community, conversation, experimentation, engagement, and collaboration play in shaping the 21st century's economy of ideas. "Social media" may be the business buzzword (or, buzz-phrase) of 2010, but what's happening beyond the hype? What new practices and guidelines is social media imposing on business-as-usual? And what makes this type of media so much different than the media we're all used to?From the boardroom to the locus of customer interaction, social media is transforming the way we do business. The impact of this is being felt in every customer interaction, each business decision, and even in the way we source, retain and engage our staffs. This third book in the Age of Conversation series is crowdsourced, bringing together the world's leading practitioners to share their stories, perspectives, observations, and strategies. Their diverse insights and varying approaches are a reflection of the global, changing nature of business today.

Social Networking for Business: Choosing the Right Tools and Resources to Fit Your Needs ReviewRawn Shah's book, Social Networks for Business, is a top down technical view on implementing social media. He provides a view of social networking that will appeal to IT professionals as it is based on a premise that social networking is a technology that should be structured and controlled at the center like other technologies. While this is possible, the advice Shah offers is based on the fundamentals that if you build it right, manage it right, then they will come.
That logic is simple but it assumes that business professionals are users of the technology rather than creators of the solutions that operate on a social network. That last piece is important as those following the advice in this book bear a high probability of simply recreating existing low value low activity intranet portals and knowledge bases in new social networking clothing.
A warning that this is a rather lengthy review in order to explain why I see the book as technically correct but not enough to address the issues fully. Shah is not wrong, its rather he is narrow in the ability to his advice to work beyond his experience and he is looking at the issue with an established techno-management lens that does not capture the potential of these new technologies. Perhaps no book can capture it all, in which case this becomes part of a social media library and body of study.
That has been my observation at more than two dozen companies I have met all of whom have the same question "We, meaning IT, have built a social network with all the bells and whistles but no one wants to use it." The reason behind the low use is in the question itself. Social networks are not built and provided by one party for others to use. Social networks are not software in the traditional sense, but generative technologies that require engaging the business in their creation of the applications that matter.
My intent in this review is not to degrade Shah's work. The book is first rate, complete, well written and very thoughtful. Its just that Shah's application of traditional heavy weight IT management principles do not consider the idea that the business, not IT builds the solutions. This is understandable as the author comes from IBM and the advice he provides reflects their unique sales/engineering culture that looks for structure and unfortunately is unique to Big Blue. There is nothing wrong with IBM, the same way that there is nothing wrong with the advice in this book.
Readers need to be aware that this book treats social networking as a management and technical issue. A view that I have observed is incomplete at best and detrimental to the enterprise efforts to gain the collaboration, knowledge sharing and flexibility needed to compete in this environment.
Shah recognizes this issue, devoting five of the ten chapters to issues related to the social system. Unfortunately here he takes a technical management view defining the roles, governance and structures required to set up a central management of the network. The work is good and complete down to salary ranges for community managers and their assigned work tasks. I can see this working in a highly structured culture where people look for the right way to contribute before making a contribution. The issue with gaining value from social networking is not that they do not have enough management; it is more like they do not have enough emphasis on the social systems. In this regard I like Seth Godin's notion of mavens as a lightweight structure to make the social systems work.
Strengths:
*Comprehensive in addressing the management and technical issues involved in implementing social networks in a modern top down corporation
*Strong focus on defining terms and laying out the taxonomy of social networking
*Chapter 10 the last chapter's first few pages summarizes a strong definition of social media and networking. It should have appeared in the first chapter as it sets a good context for the book
*Proves technical and operational management best practices for those technologies
*Clearly written and focused as it delivers a significant amount of information in 162 pages.
Challenges
*The absence of examples is regrettable, as we need to see how these practices work in reality rather than being described in the abstract. Changing social relationships is always contextually heavy and some examples would have gone a long way to addressing the points mentioned earlier.
*The book does not address business issues that can be addressed by social networking. The focus of the social networking solutions implied by the book is in terms of people using wiki's, blogs and the like rather tan what the business uses the tools to accomplish.
*The view of social networking as fundamentally a technical and central management issue. This is despite the fact that Shah offers models that are not based on central control like the starfish model. Unfortunately as he goes to illustrate potential applications the management structure turns out to be centralized more often than not (Chapter 5).
*The book outlines solutions that are dependent on the authors experience within IBM and that colors the recommendations and views. IBM is mentioned sporadically throughout the book and while they have accomplished a lot using social networking, the book is a little too IBM centric to be viewed as an entirely independent analysis of what works in the market place. This does not make what Shah writes wrong - it just makes it narrow in is potential application.
*Social behavior is assumed to come from management structures rather than the motivation and interest of people. This gives the reader the feeling that a top down approach, driven by sponsors can tacitly coerce collaboration out of a corporation.
Shah's book brings a technical set of practices that compliment McAfee's business-social definitions in his book Enterprise 2.0. This is a good thing and readers will find value. However they must recognize the limitations and implied mental models found in the book.
I need structure for social networking and this book does a good job of describing structure. However, you need the right social systems first as no amount of structure will overcome weak social dynamics and create value.Social Networking for Business: Choosing the Right Tools and Resources to Fit Your Needs OverviewThe First Best-Practice Guide to Executing Any Type of Social Computing ProjectOrganizations today aren't just participating in social networking, collaborative computing, and online communities--they are depending on those communities to play crucially important roles in their business. The Definitive Twitter Guide: Making Tweets Work for Your Business: 30 Twitter Success Stories From Real Businesses and Non-Profits ReviewI started reading this book and almost immediately started saying things like, "I didn't know that", or "Well, that makes sense, why didn't I think of that?", or even a few versions of "Huh?". The book isn't written over my head, nor is it under my ability. Let me give you a better idea. I'm no genius. I frequently misspell frequently misspelled words. I'm no slouch either. I'm proud of the fact that I essentially taught myself much of what I needed to know in order to pass the tests that helped get me in a classroom. I guess I'm average.

But in being average, I feel that I'm like a lot of people out there. I use Twitter, but probably not to the full potential. I have a blog, but I'm sure I could do more with it. Just like a lot of other people out there. Given that, I feel uniquely qualified to tear into this book and give it a good once-over.
I think this book is essential for those who want to use Twitter for more than telling us what you are making for dinner. When I talk to young people, many want to start some sort of business. That's great, and for those people I suggest finding ways to use Twitter to their best advantage. The Definitive Twitter Guide should be your first stop.
This book is extremely well written, to the point that it could hold my attention long enough for me to read it, start following it, and get up here and write a bunch of words about it. If you are like me, young enough to use Twitter but old enough to be slightly intimidated by the tech, Shannon makes the information accessible.
The PF guy in me wants to leave it at "buy this book", but the teacher in me feels the need to jump in as well. Any of my students will tell you that I rarely give "A's". This is one of those times.

Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business ReviewJerry Zyskowski, Normandy Park, WA. Volunteer counselor to small businesses. My extensive background (18+ years with: [...]) helping small business owners gives me a good understanding of their needs, and this book will certainly be beneficial to them in the effective use of social media to propagate their business.
This is an excellent book for small business people to help them connect with potential customers in a more efficient manner via digital social media. This is not a book about sales, but is focused on connecting the parties leading to future sales.
Robbin first takes us through the social media mix, what's out there for us to use. Describing each and how they might be used to help us connect with customers. She then goes on to identify target audience types that have a need for our products/services. Target audiences are better than target individuals; we get the word out to a larger group. Digital social media is one choice among many to do the job, and it needs to be considered as complementary to our more conventional methods. The idea is for our business to get exposure to potential customers using a mix of tools. Initial exposure is a step toward deeper involvement with customers and eventual sales of our products. That's what Social Persuasion is all about.
The book is heavy reading, and I actually put it down for a week or so when half way through in order to adequately digest what I had read.
To help in your understanding, Robbin takes us through the social persuasion process with the case of an Interior Designer. I found this application to be very useful in relating the text material to a real world situation.
As you read the book, new terms will come up. To help you recollect what the terms mean, Robbin has included a very good Glossary in the back of the book. Since the social media technology is constantly changing, her list of Sources may become dated with time. Hopefully, she will augment these with periodic updates on her website: [...].
I consider Robbin's book an excellent addition to the field of social media application, and it should be a valuable aid to small business owners.

The Backchannel: How Audiences are Using Twitter and Social Media and Changing Presentations Forever ReviewEffective public speaking is a challenge for many executives. They must prepare interesting content, overcome stage fright and deliver a speech that will hold the audience's attention. As if that wasn't difficult enough, they are increasingly likely to find themselves looking out at a sea of faces illuminated by the glow of laptops and PDAs. Social media is invading the auditorium, and rather than tuning out while a speech is delivered, people are turning on laptops and cell phones to send out text messages, broadcasting to the world their opinions of a presentation.
In his new book Cliff Atkinson explains how these new forms of online communication are shifting the rules of engagement between audiences and presenters. Instead of sitting politely until it's time for Q & A, people are going online during the address to swap comments and opinions via an electronic backchannel.
At the very least, Atkinson claims, speakers and their communications support staff need to be aware that there is likely to be a backchannel in the room and learn how to monitor it or be left out of the conversation. Beyond this basic awareness, he encourages communicators to take the initiative and employ social media as an integral part of any executive's presentation.
Practical advice
Atkinson's book covers a lot of ground, from how to open a Twitter account to advice on expanding the conversation with the audience. He details how social media can transform a presentation from a one-off information dump into a longer-term relationship--one that starts before you step onto the podium. His advice includes:
* Breaking a speech into "Twitter-sized chunks" to make it easier for people to post 140-character sound bites. One measure of success then becomes how many of these summary statements are posted and reposted online.
* Using Twitter as a vehicle to extend your ideas to people outside the room, giving them a "virtual stage pass" to the event.
* Creating instant polls using tools, such as Twtpoll and Poll Everywhere, to involve the audience.
* Publishing a Presentation Home Page using wiki software. For example, I was inspired by Atkinson's book to create [...]/ listing my past and future talks. A Presentation Home Page is a convenient archive for reference material; blog postings; a Twitter feed; bio and contact information and more. This shifts the burden from overly busy PowerPoint slides as the sole way to communicate information. Also, by implementing a page like this prior to an event you initiate a backchannel that involves the audience, letting you gather comments and suggestions before you deliver the talk. After the event, the page becomes a repository for evaluation responses, blog postings, reference material and a transcript.
Atkinson acknowledges there are both risks and rewards involved in the backchannel. It enables people to connect online and become part of a shared community, but at the risk of leaving out those who are unaware of what is happening. It gives the speaker a way to reach a wider audience, but at the risk of distracting the smooth delivery of material. It provides an archive for comments and opinions, but a series of 140-character notes can lack context. And there's the very real risk that the comments people make on Twitter might lack civility and shock presenters with their sometimes brutal honesty.
Though this approach is not for everyone, Atkinson describes a potent way in which social media allows a (frightening?) new level of transparency that speakers can use to transform a one-way stream of communication into a dialogue with the audience--before, during and after the speech.
The Backchannel might not bring welcome news to presenters who are wedded to the old school ways of controlling audience response and involvement, but is clearly shows how you can magnify the impact of a speech using social media. The Backchannel: How Audiences are Using Twitter and Social Media and Changing Presentations Forever OverviewArmed with laptops and smartphones, audiences today are no longer sitting quietly taking notes during live presentations. Instead, they're carving out a new space in the room called the backchannel, where people are online searching for resources, checking your facts, and connecting with others inside the room and out. When audiences are happy, the backchannel vastly extends the reach of ideas and creates a new sense of community and connectedness. But when they are unhappy, the intersection of frustrated audiences with unaware presenters can often create dramatic and public breakdowns of communication—and even mob mentality. In this book, communications consultant Cliff Atkinson shows that if these new kinds of audience participation are embraced and the conversations properly handled, the outcome can be a new, more effective form of communicating. Whether you're a host, presenter, or an audience member, Cliff will help you understand how this convergence of social forces is upending the presentation norm and how you can effectively manage the change.
