Starting an Online Business All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback)) ReviewThis book was a real surprise. I fully expected to use it as a resource for new Ebay/Web commerce users that we help teach but found it excelled not only in the basics but in pretty much the whole plan of where you would want to be online in the long run. I am particulary fond of books that discuss legal and accounting set up and this one covers a lot of good info like type of organization, record keeping, copyrights and trademarks, a tax overview etc. A great foundation for the new online business. There is a lot of information regarding web site design, internet security and boosting your sales. Usually many books would leave off in this area but not this one. It has information on taking your retail business online , selling from a storefront and covers some important ideas like affiliate marketing and finding a niche. Whether deciding to operate on Ebay or with your own website this book is jam packed with information. Even as an experienced online user I found myself making notes from many of the sections in the book including those with suggestions on what to do to expand sales, deal with changes and other customer issues. Just as a note this is one huge book. Over 800 pages including the index and for the price a bargain. For Ebayers I would recommend this book and a general Ebay book as a package to buy. What I fould beneficial are the "types of pages" he says should be included on your site. Questions that I also had that were answered in this book are:

- he explains how to do email marketing, what to include, and why it's important
- how you can get usable content for your website, newsletters, etc. He points out a clever trick to find free downloads of
pdf's about any subject which you could utilize to create your own content
- an explanation of what resolution is best for images used on your site & the importance of getting this right
- why creating videos to take advantage of youtube is a smart thing for businesses & how setting up a youtube channel is valuable
to users
- why adding a pop-up written message from within youtube could possibly cause a person to visit your website
- how to get the most from your presence on facebook or position yourself as an expert by blogging
- his description of different problems that your site could face & what one thing you can do to find out these problems have
happened sooner to protect you from revenue losses
But the part of most significance to me was his breakdown of decisions you need to make when dealing with the setup of money collection from customers. These include what you need to make customers comfortable in making a purchase at your site, why your shopping cart choice is so important, and his simplified chart which illustrates what happens when a customer uses his credit card. All-in-all, this is a great book to have. It has so much interesting and unique information that I most definitely would want to own more of Greg Jameson's books. That is his real job. He does it for online and offline clients. So while he goes about his daily business he amasses tons of information that he eventually decided to put into a book to sell. I don't get the idea at all that this is some guy who makes a career out of writing Internet marketing guides. As you go through the material you begin to realize something: The guy really knows what he is talking about. You can tell by the examples in the book that he does this stuff both offline and online.
The book is very, very good for those wanting to learn marketing techniques online. Honestly it's like a textbook. In many respects he pulls back the curtain on marketing tactics. I found it helpful for understanding why marketers write the way they do. From the long sales copy to bold claim headlines to web page layouts. Sure we all know that headlines matter, buyers like long reads, etc. But Lance explains it in a way that makes sense and gets you thinking how to implement the tactics in your own sites and landing pages.
The book is full of examples from email writing to headlines to layouts. There is so much information on how to create the right advertisement. If you are doing PPC ads and landing pages then this book is for you. If you have a website and are trying to sell something then this book is for you. OK, if you are already making $5K a month then it's probably not for you. But if you are just starting out trying to sell things on the Internet or are making a humble sum of cash then I really believe that a book like this will help. I've read quite a few PPC ebooks and none are close to this. I believe it is because Lance is actually a professional sales copy writer for both online and offline clients. And you know, PPC success is really all salescopy.
You know how marketers will say that you need to do "X" to convert more sales? And you sit there wondering why? And you get the sense that the joker has no clue why either, but he says so because that's what "they" say works, or learned it from someone else, or saw an example from another salespage. Well Lance explains the why, for every step of building a salespage. You'll read through the manual and think "ah, that's why I'm told to do that", or "so that's why this is suppose to convert better". This book was OK. It had the potential to be a great little book on Internet marketing. However, I just had too much trouble digesting it. I did not see any reason to split the content into three parts, 21 chapters, and an appendix. And there were typos - more than just a few. On top of that, I found the book to be incredibly wordy. And the journalistic style of writing is adequate for newspaper articles, but not for something sold as a book. There were many one-sentence paragraphs throughout. And the page formatting left me thinking I was reading a text file that had been converted to PDF.
If the author had organized the book into eight chapters as follows, and done a nice job of developing a theme in each chapter, then I suspect the book would deserve at least a 4-star rating.
1. Search Engine Optimization
2. Article writing & submission
3. Blogging
4. Posting on online directories
5. Posting press releases on PR directory sites
6. Posting on free classifieds sites
7. Social networking & forums
8. Affiliate programs & Joint ventures
Unfortunately, the book is not so neatly organized. And there are numerous "bonuses" refered to in the book. When I buy a book I expect everything in it to be something I paid for. I don't need to be told I am getting a bonus here and a bonus there.
I was able to get through parts 1 and 2 of the book before I started just skimming the text. There really is a lot of good content in this little ebook masquarading as a POD special. The author qualifies as an infopreneur and she speaks from real world experience in much of what she talks about here. There are a ton of URLs that any infopreneur would probably like to get their hands on. Whether they will be good links in a year or two I don't know. But the raw content in this little tome saves it for me. Lacing each chapter with stories retold by online millionaires, Joyner's 101 approach (with sub-chapter headings like The Lowdown and How It Works) may not appeal to the Internet enthusiast, or anyone under the age of 16, but will be a breath of fresh air to the web-challenged. Joyner keeps it simple and paints with broad strokes . . . so for me - a member of the latter group, Millionaire helped break down the intimidating and self-imposed barriers I have towards the Internet. I couldn't build a website before reading this book and I probably won't anytime soon, but the curtain has been pulled and the mystery revealed.

ERIC VAN DER HOPE - its author, has high credentials behind him. Perhaps more importantly, he gives a list of his mentors at the beginning, including Ted Nichols, Anthony Robbins, Joe Sugarman, Mark Joyner, (the late) Corey Rudi, Shawn Casey, Frank Kern, Mike Litman + many, many other top marketers - a formidable mastermind group.
Some observations...
NICHE MARKET - Eric defines this as "a small but potentially profitable market segment for which it is possible to design and provide a form of custom-made product or specialized service." It involves 'targeting a group' using information about their specific preferences, which might be a group interested in - exotic vacations - real estate - tennis - gardening, etc.
NO BULL - he 'tells it like it is' in terms of becoming successful with running any Online business -- that there IS a huge market out there where good profits CAN be made -- but, that you'll need MONEY to do it -- that you'll need to take ACTION -- that there's intense COMPETITION -- that you'll need to intelligently 'identify' your market, etc. This approach impressed me.
SPECIFICS - he goes into extraordinary detail with - "Finding the Niche" -- Creating the Product" -- "Developing the Offer" -- "9 Effective Business Models" -- "Top 10 Niche Sourcing Methods" -- Case Studies -- Explicit Pictures, Screenshots, Graphs, Diagrams, Charts, etc. Amazing.
VIRTUAL STOREFRONT - you'll learn of the requirements for your Online biz (choosing Domain names, FTP accounts, Autoresponders, Merchant accounts, Hosting, Video, Audio, etc + Upselling [back-end products], Advertising, Keywords, Social Media Marketing, Testing, Traffic generation - on and on. These are only tip of the iceberg. :-)
BLOGGING - this is the 'only' part (Section 2.9) where I have a tiny disagreement with the author :-) Since developing a BLOG (for profit) can be of tremendous value in these times (as a business by itself) - and whereas he suggests using FREE Blogging platforms (like WordPress.com and/or Blogger.com) - I (personally) strongly recommend using a platform where "you" have the full control. The Free versions give you only limited scope, and they can even be "shut down" on you. The ones where 'you' provide the hosting are far superior in my opinion. I'm referring to WordPress.ORG (not the ".com" Free version). WordPress.ORG - although a little more complex - when it's tied to a good hosting service (like Hostgator.com, or those listed on Eric's page 91) - is considered the top Blog platform by most experts I believe.
ACTION STEPS - what I really liked was the way Eric ended each Phase with a set of specific Action Steps - designed to get you "in production" ASAP.
RESOURCES - he provides SO many links to great tools / systems / websites. This only expands an already rich book on the HOW TO of Internet Marketing. It removes the confusion, the overwhelm and the technical obstacles that hinder so many people that are eager to move forward in this challenging but worthwhile and potentially lucrative industry.
All in all, a magnificant contribution to the world of Internet Marketing.
My thanks to the author for this timely masterpiece - it's a classic.

Make Money Online: Roadmap of a Dot Com Mogul ReviewIf it weren't for my familiarity with John Chow, I might have passed on this book based on my skepticism of the "make money online" theme of the title. Although you can download the ebook for free from his site, I was impressed by the comments on his blog and the reviews here that I decided to give the paperback a chance. This has become one of my top books of 2010.
I've been blogging since 2004, with modest success. While I knew quite a bit about blogging and WordPress, I managed to pick up some tips and tricks in the first six chapters. Chapter 7 covered what I felt that I needed help the most - how to write online content that attracts and keeps readers. I also learned a lot from Chapters 8 through 13 and will refer to them once I nail down the principles in the seventh chapter.

I liked this book on blogging. When I first spotted this title I wasn't sure I wanted to pick it up. The author is a professional writer. He has written a lot of books. And I've read a few of them. I've even posted a book review for one or two of them on Amazon. The author's books for the most part come across as term papers to me. They can be kind of mechanical and don't always dig too deeply into the subject material. But this book is better than most of his previous works. Maybe it is because he is an active blogger himself and much of what he covers here came from first-hand knowledge?
I am by no means an expert when it comes to blogging. But I have read quite a few books on the subject and I have two blogs of my own which I haven't been contributing to lately. In my humble opinion this book is one of the better ones I have read on blogging. I was very happy to see some coverage of Blogger-dot-com and Wordpress-dot-com, two free services that anyone can (and should) take advantage of when building an online presence for themselves or their business(es). I was not familiar with Vox-dot-com or Blogster-dot-com before I read this book, but now think they are nice services to get involved with, too.
The book is well organized and well written. It is fairly comprehensive. It has 15 chapters and a glossary. The target audience is probably small business owners who are seeking to take their company online so they have an online presence where they can promote themselves, their expertise, their credibility, and how much of an authority they are. Blogging is an important ingredient in the mix, and by reading this book you will probably be well on the road to using your blogs both efficiently and productively. 5 stars!

eBoot Camp: Proven Internet Marketing Techniques to Grow Your Business ReviewI have developed several hundred websites over the last decade, optimized them for Google, and have literally made millions for my clients. So while most web marketing books may not present me with new techniques, I have still given five-star reviews to those that I think others would find useful.
Not only is this book a weak primer with plenty of page filler, but Perlman's suggestions can actually hurt your marketing results. Chapter 4 is dedicated to your keywords meta tag, yet Perlman doesn't realize nor does he mention that Google's algorithms have completely ignored the keywords tag for years. When discussing title tags, he makes no mention of easy mistakes that will get websites penalized or even blacklisted from Google. Perlman encourages reciprocal link exchanges with other webmasters (with no mention of anchor text), but never explains that some links can be worthless, and others can get you banned from Google.
The only effective marketing angles that Perlman barely scratches the surface on are writing articles, press releases, and blogging. I can point out several books for the same amount of money that contain ten times as much useful information for newbies and designers alike, such as Web Marketing All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies, and Web Copy That Sells.
I bought this book (Amazon verified) because there were almost 50 glowing reviews. What I failed to notice was that 90% of the reviewers have written only one review. Most of them refer to the author by his first name, and suggest that they've been to his seminars. The testimonials in his book are from other authors, and not a single one of them are web developers or online marketing experts. Perlman himself seems to have no background in web design or internet marketing (there's zero mention of either on his sites or in his book).
Countless other web marketing books will help you more in the long run, and will actually tell you how not to get banned from Google. I'm not even upset that I bought it, I'm upset that so many people new to web marketing will buy it, and do a major disservice to promoting their business.eBoot Camp: Proven Internet Marketing Techniques to Grow Your Business OverviewIn this Web 2.0 era, small business owners are at a severe disadvantage because they have minimal, if any, knowledge, about Internet marketing. They also lack the budget to hire a top-notch web marketer. How to Make Your Own Free Website: And Your Free Blog Too ReviewI bought Mr. Matthews' ebook on marketing and selling ebooks at the same time I purchased this one. While that one focuses a lot on marketing and selling (duh, right?), this has more in the way of setting up free websites and blogs with little to no knowledge of HTML.
As I just recently self pubbed my first short novel/novella, I wanted to see what I could do setting up a website for little to no money. (I'm the stereotypical cash-strapped writer, lol.) The website I was contemplating setting up was an all modular, drag and drop-type of set up, but I felt the cost on a monthly basis just doesn't work at this point in time.
So I got this book. And it pointed me in directions I never thought about. It discussed certain things about websites I'd never considered. As I already have a free blog, I didn't pay as much attention to that, but I'll re-read because I figure I can only better my blog with more suggestions. :-)
And his advice on using a Google external tool for a domain name - it was the easiest explanation for using that particular tool that I've ever seen.
