The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More ReviewWell, timing is everything... and isn't always fair. Had I not just completed reading Jeffrey & Bryan Eisenberg's "Waiting For Your Cat to Bark?" before picking up "The Long Tail," I would probably have given this book 4 stars.
Chris Anderson has done a very good job of showing us the new "economics of abundance," or the connection of supply and demand thru technology and the Internet.
Question: What happens when everything in the world becomes available to everyone?
Answer: A market that never dies... markets for every niche, and vice-versa.
The Long Tail.
Using corporate examples like Google, eBay, iTunes and Netflix, Anderson lends an interesting perspective on how these companies have grabbed the Long Tail theory (consciously or unconsciously) and used it as the foundation for their staggering success. For customers of these companies, being online means unlimited "shelf space" - access to hundreds of thousands of bits of information, products and services they'd never been exposed to otherwise.
But how does the ordinary businessperson experience the success of the eBays of the world? Here, Anderson falls short. He states his "secret" to The Long Tail:
1.Make everything available
2.Help me find it
It's the "help me find it" part that Anderson ignores. In fact, it's the end of the book... you're left hanging, thinking, "So how in hell am I supposed to help people find me?"
Taken for what it is - a good presentation of a present-day theory (and one that was adequately covered in the original article in Wired magazine), the book is fine. But to really understand what it takes to make the Long Tail theory work for you, you must get a copy of "Waiting for Your Cat to Bark." It's in-depth coverage on not only how our economy works today, but understanding how people buy, how to understand what they're looking for and what you need to do to create persuasion magic not only on your website but in all your marketing materials.
This is not a time for "build it and they will come." Understanding an economy is only the first step. The real question is - what are you going to do about it to make yourself an integral part of the Long Tail?
It's too bad "The Long Tail" and "Waiting For Your Cat to Bark" can't be sold in a box set - they were made for each other. The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More Overview

If I had to guess, social commerce is the next areato really blow up »-- Mark Zuckerberg, Août 2010

How to Do Everything with Web 2.0 Mashups ReviewThis book reminded me of Marine Corps boot camp. We did a lot of stuff, but only just enough to say we did it and not enough to learn anything from it. This book tries to cover far too many topics in a very short space. We used this book for a class I took the summer before last. It is not even really a good introduction as it leaves out many particulars needed to understand what is going on. I had to do quite a bit of internet research just to figure out much of what this book purported to teach. I say skip this book and get some more thorough books on the individual topics. How to Do Everything with Web 2.0 Mashups Overview

Enterprise Web 2.0 Fundamentals ReviewIt's perhaps slightly surprising to see this put out by Cisco Press. They usually deal with topics closely if not explicitly tied to Cisco hardware, or to Cisco sponsored credentialling.
The book has more general scope, for the most part. It talks in broad, largely nontechnical prose, about the Web 2.0. Explaining what this means in terms of blogs, social networking, wikis and other user-generated activities. But it also has meaning in terms of the mobile user, who might access the web from a cellphone, PDA or wireless netbook.
As to how the Web 2.0 is accomplished in a technical manner, the book describes various programming languages that are popular in building such websites. Think Ajax and Ruby on Rails, for instance.
The conceptual boundary of the Web is the so-called Semantic Web, a term proposed by Tim Berners-Lee. We get some airing here about the Semantic Web. You get to appreciate that this is still early times for it. The book also brings up cloud computing. Alas, the latter term is so vague, but to the extent that it has useful meaning, the book tries to educate you on this.
The last 2 chapters are where Cisco is actively promoted. Describing how Cisco uses things like blogs in their sales group. I'm not sure quite what to make of these chapters. Is it mainly to build mindshare about how Cisco uses these ideas? For instance, it mentions how Cisco won several awards for their projects. Good for them.
The appendices are extensive and quite good, if you want to use the book as a guide to far more detailed resources on the Web. In a way, the appendices somewhat impart the book the flavour of a review article in a scholarly journal, by their copious references to original texts.Enterprise Web 2.0 Fundamentals OverviewAn introduction to next-generation web technologiesThis is a comprehensive, candid introduction to Web 2.0 for every executive, strategist, technical professional, and marketer who needs to understand its implications. Pro Web 2.0 Mashups: Remixing Data and Web Services (Expert's Voice in Web Development) ReviewKudos to the author and publisher for this release.
This book is a tour de force of the subject of Mashups.
I was looking for a good book on this subject so that I could introduce it to students as part of an extra-curricular technology program in NYC and this book is perfect.
In a sentence, Mashups are created by taking data from one or more sources and making something new and useful from them.
In my opinion, the subject is very important because there is a vast amount of data that is available now. Today the challenge is not just finding data but putting to use. This book shows you how to do that.
The author's writing style is excellent, mixing theory and applications. The book is filled with hands on examples as well as references for research in each of the areas.
I believe that this book can be read by anyone interested in the subject, regardless of their technical background. For those that want to create Mashups without programming, this book shows you how. For those that want to delve into programming, everything that you need is covered including AJAX, PHP, various data formats and how to parse them, various Javascript libraries and more.
The book is laid out in four parts:
1. Remixing Information Without Programming
As the title suggests, the chapters in this section require no previous programming experience. The author walks through some specific examples, introduces terminology and analyzes how sites like Flickr and del.icio.us work so that you can get the most out of them. Tools such as Yahoo! Pipes (a browser-based visual application for Mashups and Remixing) are explored. Following along with the discussion the reader can put together a Mashup or Remix by simply understanding the concepts and using tools, but not having to delve into coding.
2. Remixing a Single Web Application Using Its API
For the person who wants to code, this part of the book jumps right in discussing the Flickr API, PHP usage, XML processing and more. From there the discussion moves to other APIs and using AJAX/Javascript widgets.
3. Making Mashups
This section starts by delving into the ProgrammableWeb website. Showing how to find what resources are available, studying existing Mashups via which APIs they use and how to go about creating new ones. From there XMLHttpRequest and Javascript libraries such as YUI are covered and a step-by-step example is given using the previously discussed techniques. Lastly, the author addresses issues around implementing Mashups on your site including standards, accessibility and your own API. I was glad to see these topics covered as sometimes in the haste of getting something online, they can be overlooked.
4. Exploring Other Mashup Topics
This final section of the book covers a large range of interesting topics such as Map-based Mashups, Social Bookmarking, Calendars, Online Storage, Desktop and Office Suites, Embeddable Data Formats and Searches.
As you can see, there's a lot of information covered in this book. In my opinion, everything that one could want on the subject and written in such a way that you want to keep reading, exploring and creating your own Mashups.
I highly recommend this book - so far, it has been my favorite read of 2008!Pro Web 2.0 Mashups: Remixing Data and Web Services (Expert's Voice in Web Development) OverviewMashups are hugely popular right now, a very important topic within the general area of Web 2.0, involving technologies such as CSS, JavaScript, Ajax, APIs, libraries, and server-side languages (such as PHP and ASP.NET.) This book aims to be the definitive tome on Mashup development, to stand in the middle of all the other, more API specific books coming out on Google Maps, Flickr, etc.The book shows you how to create real world Mashups using all the most poplar APIs, such as Google Maps, Flickr, Amazon Web Services, and delicious, and includes examples in multiple different server-side languages, such as PHP, Java, and .NET. It will have a large target audience, but still deliver an effective and engaging learning experience, regardless of the specific technologies the reader prefers to use.

How to Do Everything with Your Web 2.0 Blog ReviewDo yourself a favor: don't judge this book by its (awful) cover. I've had this book by my side every step of the way while setting up my very first blog, and I have to say it has been a huge help. Stauffer's style is direct and engaging, not cutesy. He tells you what you need to know to get started, without a lot of fluff.
I wanted to write a review here because I think this books deserves a big audience, and because the Amazon listing tells you little about what's covered. So here's what's inside:
"Web 2.0 Blog" covers four different blogging platforms: Blogger, TypePad, WordPress, and Expression Engine. So if you're interested in one of these four, you'll find the book very helpful. If you are trying to decide which of the four to go with, the book is even more helpful, as you can compare them feature by feature. For instance, you'll see that while Expression Engine seems quite powerful and flexible, it's obviously more complicated than the other three. Stauffer does a good job of helping you weigh the pros and cons of each.
The book covers quite a lot in a 450 pages, and it does it very well. There's even a basic introduction to XHTML and CSS, giving you a peak at how each blogging platform works under the hood. Other topics covered in depth are:
- RSS feeds
- Photoblogs, podcasting, audioblogging, and adding video
- Working with social bookmarking sites such as Digg and Technorati
- using wikis to collaborate with readers
- adding a forum to open the discussion beyond comments
- community and group blogs
- sending e-newsletters to your subscribers
- getting traffic and monetizing your blog
Highly recommended.

Unleashing Web 2.0: From Concepts to Creativity ReviewThis book is an excellent book on Web 2.0 technologies and how they can be used to provide value to users in a Web 2.0 world. The book is a light on technical (programming), but rich on concepts and the business side of Web 2.0. What makes this book useful is the fact that it reintroduces common concepts such as blogs in a way that an executive can understand and take advantage of. The first chapter discusses a brief history of the web. The second chapter goes into explaining what web technologies such as CSS and XML are and what a web service can do for a business. There are a few other very useful chapters in this book, but by no means you should stop your Web 2.0 quest with this book. This book's a great way to start your Web 2.0 journey and it even puts forth the notion of semantic web. But, once you figure out what area you want to concentrate on, I recommend getting a more comprehensive book on that specific topic.Unleashing Web 2.0: From Concepts to Creativity OverviewThe emergence of Web 2.0 is provoking challenging questions for developers:What products and services can our company provide to customers and employees using Rich Internet Applications, mash-ups, Web feeds or Ajax?Which business models are appropriate and how do we implement them? What are best practices and how do we apply them?If you need answers to these and related questions, you need this book-a comprehensive and reliable resource that guides you into the emerging and unstructured landscape that is Web 2.0.Gottfried Vossen is a professor of Information Systems and Computer Science at the University of Muenster in Germany. He is the European Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier's Information Systems-An International Journal.Stephan Hagemann is a PhD. Web 2.0: Concepts and Applications (Shelly Cashman) ReviewGood introduction for students to the Web 2.0 concept.
Seems there are not many student oriented course books covering the Web 2.0 topic (yet). This maybe one of the first. The book is well organized and written. It contains 6 chapters:
1. The WEB becomes 2.0
on evolution of the web from the basic websites, to the web as a 'platform'.
2. Publishing online
.... Blogs and wikis.
3. Syndicating content
... RSS, webfeeds, and podcasts.
4. Organizing information
... Organizing digital data, using tags, filtering data.
5. Connecting people
.... personal and business use of social networking (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn).
6. Linking data
... 'Cloud computing' and a prelude to Web 3.0
All the chapters have plenty screenshots and figures, which helps in clarifying the text. The screenshots and figures also make it appealing and interesting to go through, read or study. Students are encouraged to visit sites, and for example create a blog, or a wiki. Lots of terms/words are presented. From the more popular, (HTML, streaming video, and many more) to the less known like, reciprocal link, skyscraper, loaderboard, importxml, and many others.
Every chapter is closed with questions and exercises. There's also an online companion website where students can lookup additional material, watch online videos, and try short-answer questions. All intended to help in student retention of the material. I haven't tried the online companion out yet. It sounds promising. I will update this review when I've tried it out.
There are some aspects I do miss in the text. For example the debate on how reliable information posted on web2.0 sites really are. Whether or how students should use information from these sites as reference in their own work(reports). Perhaps more caution with regards on what and how people should handle with posting (personal) information out for public. Sites like Google, Yahoo, and YoutTube, are mentioned, but I feel more could be said about them. I also would have liked to see some information on sites like, Amazon, eBay, MSN, PayPall,... Although "classic" now, these sites have helped the web to evolve. They might have been left out to prevent the book to become too many pages. Which is understandable.

Chances are that students are already familiar with some of the sites in the book, applications and services (Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia). But there are several more that are presented in the text that may not be that well known, and that are certainly worthwhile to explore. Also the text gives the reader/student insight into the background and the concepts.
This book is a good starting point for students (new to the subject of WEB 2.0) to explore and research the web2.0 concept, sites, applications and possibilities.Web 2.0: Concepts and Applications (Shelly Cashman) OverviewWeb 2.0 provides dynamic and comprehensive coverage of the most current information available on Web 2.0 today. You will gain a solid understanding of the current trends in technology and concepts associated with interactive information sharing and new web applications. You will gain knowledge of web-based communities, social-networking, video and filing sharing sites as well as blogging, wikis and more.

Ajax: The Definitive Guide Review§
There is a LOT of code in this 950 page book. I guess there is something here for everyone because there is code not directly related to Ajax but is directed to HTML structure or CSS presentational aspects or to frameworks that may include Ajax conveniences.
In fact, the amount of code may interfere with the author's object of appealing to two very different types of people with this book: Web developers and project managers looking for a high-level view. Except for some intro chapters and the odd breather between 10-15 page code listings, I don't think any project managers *I* have worked with would extract much from the book.
The book has 4 sections:
Part 1 - Ajax Fundamentals: the basic technologies that could form the core of a typical Ajax application.
Part 2 - Ajax Foundations: approaches to standards-compliant structure, separation of the presentational layer and client-side behaviors. Code code code!
Part 3 - Ajax in Applications: describes the specific implementations of these technologies into Web applications. More code!
Part 4 - Wrapping Up: tips on optimization.
In addition, there are some reference appendices on XML and XSLT; on JavaScript frameworks; on Ajax implementation risks; and most interestingly, a catalog of freely available Web service APIs.
One thing I did not like about the code listings was the use of Prototype style $() function syntax. This means when I see something like:
var titleText = $('title').firstChild;
I had to check whether .firstChild was a reference to a Prototype object or a reference to the standard DOM object. If the standard object, it would have been a whole lot clear just to have written document.getElementById().
The book index is actually pretty good. With 950 pages stuffed with content, you will probably be thankful for that!
§Ajax: The Definitive Guide Overview
Is Ajax a new technology, or the same old stuff web developers have been using for years? Both, actually. This book demonstrates not only how tried-and-true web standards make Ajax possible, but how these older technologies allow you to give sites a decidedly modern Web 2.0 feel.Ajax: The Definitive Guide explains how to use standards like JavaScript, XML, CSS, and XHTML, along with the XMLHttpRequest object, to build browser-based web applications that function like desktop programs. You get a complete background on what goes into today's web sites and applications, and learn to leverage these tools along with Ajax for advanced browser searching, web services, mashups, and more. You discover how to turn a web browser and web site into a true application, and why developing with Ajax is faster, easier and cheaper. The book also explains:

How to connect server-side backend components to user interfaces in the browser
Loading and manipulating XML documents, and how to replace XML with JSON
Manipulating the Document Object Model (DOM)
Designing Ajax interfaces for usability, functionality, visualization, and accessibility
Site navigation layout, including issues with Ajax and the browser's back button
Adding life to tables & lists, navigation boxes and windows
Animation creation, interactive forms, and data validation
Search, web services and mash-ups
Applying Ajax to business communications, and creating Internet games without plug-ins
The advantages of modular coding, ways to optimize Ajax applications, and more
This book also provides references to XML and XSLT, popular JavaScript Frameworks, Libraries, and Toolkits, and various Web Service APIs. By offering web developers a much broader set of tools and options, Ajax gives developers a new way to create content on the Web, while throwing off the constraints of the past. Ajax: The Definitive Guide describes the contents of this unique toolbox in exhaustive detail, and explains how to get the most out of it.

Best Website: Simple Steps to Successful Websites ReviewA remarkably good book at describing the actual steps. in detail - that need to be completed to build a truly profitable website! I'm surprised no one has been able to write a book like this before. An actual complete guide that steps through; what type of website to start, getting the right domain name, setting up the web server, easily building and managing the website and finally, a number of excellent promotional strategies - that are actually mostly free!!
I measure how much I like a book by how many tabs I place to mark the pages... and I have quite a few marked with this book. Even the "How to Make a $100,000 from Something You Already Have." Chapter isn't hype.. It's not easy to do, but it is a very interesting way to make money online.
Could have used more detail with regard to e-mail marketing.. but I think that is being picky. Very very, good book!! I Highly recommend it!!
Best Website: Simple Steps to Successful Websites OverviewThe book shows how to profit at least $10,000 to $20,000 a month with your website business. The reason Nelson believes he's written the best Web business book available, is because of this..Over the last 15 years of building some of the internet's most successful websites. Web 2.0: New Tools, New Schools ReviewPeople no longer just search for information on the web. Now they provide information, too. These people include our students. The world has changed; students have changed, and traditional schools are no longer up to the task of educating young people for the future.
This is the argument of the book Web 2.0: New Tools, New Schools. Although we're still in the early days of bringing together education and Web 2.0, there are good models of learning and technology use that point us in the right direction.
The authors provide examples of teachers who have guided their students to use Web 2.0 tools in creating a collaborative math solutions manual, an independent literature circle project, a collaborative guidebook about online security, for example.
Solomon and Schrum observe that, although young people may be ahead of their teachers in using these tools, teachers can help them use the tools in educationally appropriate ways.Web 2.0: New Tools, New Schools OverviewWeb 2.0 has arrived--find out how it can transform teaching and learning!
What is Web 2.0? Once upon a time, Web sites were isolated information 'silos'--all content and no functionality. Today, the next generation of Web sites gives power to the end-user, providing visitors with a new level of customization, interaction, and participation. Many Web sites now allow users to upload, categorize, and share content easily. Weblogs and podcasts allow anyone to publish or broadcast on any topic. Wikis provide information that is constantly updated by the end-user. Open-source software is free and customizable. These new technologies are changing our relationship to the Internet.
What can Web 2.0 tools offer educators? Web 2.0: New Tools, New Schools provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging Web 2.0 technologies and their use in the classroom and in professional development.
