In How to Become a Million Dollar Real Estate Agent In Your First Year, experienced real estate agent Susan Smith Alvis shatters some of the myths of real estate, but also lays out a strong, real-world guide to people who are seriously interested in entering the business as a real estate agent.
The first myth Alvis shatters is directly related to the title of the book: the idea that becoming a "million dollar real estate agent" will bring you wealth and prosperity. In fact, she points out, selling a million dollars worth of real estate might make you $42,000 per year. That simple fact might be enough to shake some people who thought the real estate market was going to be easy. Alvis further paints a picture of a competitive, cutthroat business that has potential to be lucrative, but only after a lot of careful planning and hard work.
After showing the cold, hard reality of the business, however, Alvis also delves into the positives, of which there are many, thus creating a balanced, realistic picture of what it takes to become a real estate agent. She also, thankfully, includes a chapter on ethics, in which she mentions the sometimes poor reputation of real estate agents from an ethical standpoint, and how one can be both successful and ethical in the business.
If you get past the first part and are still interested in real estate, Alvis does a great job with the main portion of the book, which is to actually walk the reader through becoming a real estate agent - from writing the business plan, to choosing an office, to sales techniques. She presents both broad advice, and specific, detailed anecdotes and tips, all of which could be applied in a real world scenario. As a guide to someone just entering the real estate business, How to Become a Million Dollar Real Estate Agent... is an excellent walkthrough.
That being said, at just 200 pages, the book contains an amazing amount of detail, but is still probably not sufficient by itself for someone looking to become a real estate agent. What it is, primarily, is a beginner's guide to becoming a real estate agent, and it works very well in that role. It provides enough detail and enough of an overview, to help someone decide whether becoming a real estate agent is a good career choice. It is a good informational springboard, and is well worth reading if you are considering moving into the real estate business, but don't know where to start.

Walk Like a Giant, Sell Like a Madman: America's #1 Salesman Shows You How to Sell Anything ReviewI have read and applied a lot of sales and marketing books in the past few years. The book starts off with Ralph proclaiming his greatness and unfortunately that is how it continues right through. Some good images and on the whole worth the purchase as the basis for explaining the basics of a sales career or a new business plan, but if you are just after a shot in the arm or even something life changing, you are better off reading the following authors if you haven't already; Harvey McKay, Anthony Robbins, Jack Welch Speaks (by Janet Lowe), Jonah C. Nader and Michael Gerber. Ralph Roberts is a real patriotic American character and he talks to much about himself, in his gung ho American style, but he doesn't mention any more than a rough concept of his business, or lecture enough about what he actually does to succeed at his level. I would call the book a great sales promotion tool for Ralph personally, but it is not big on intelligence nor is it a REAL guidebook, such as Jonah Nader's 'How to Lose Friends and Infuriate People', or Michael Gerber's 'E-Myth'. Former cult member, Lakhani starts with the dark side of persuasion then quickly moves into distinguishing the difference between manipulation and persuasion. Best is his step by step guide to manipulation. Very well done!
Many in the field of persuasion miss the crucial art of story. Lakhani does a nice job of giving his insights into one of the most difficult tasks a communicator has...to have a story persuade.
The next thing I like in Art of Persuasion is Dave's outline of how to become an expert (guru) in 30 days. Expert status ==> credibility ==> more successful influence.
Another nice step by step outline is for changing beliefs. Easy to adopt and use.
Each chapter in the book is well thought out and presented concisely and with clarity.
This is an excellent primer on the art of persuasion and I recommend you pick it up today.

Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling ReviewThis book isn't as bad as some reviewers have written or as good as others have raved about. This book isn't for salespeople and because of that I was disappointed. This book is for professionals that have to "book themselves," such as public speakers, lawyers, accountants and the like. In some ways if you don't already know what this book teaches you better get a job. However, as the E-Myth points out there are plenty of people that are good at what they do but are clueless about how to get themselves business. If you fall into this category this is a good book to read and implement.
Port's book is long and at times wordy but a fun and easy read. There are diamonds here but you have to mine through a lot of ore to get at them. The book is well written and conversational. I can see why Mr. Port has a successful career. This book is perhaps a good first read if you're considering starting your own business or want to get more clients. For a solid and measurable program I recommend "Get Clients Now" by C. J. Hayden or "Get Business to Come to You" by Sarah and Paul Edwards.

Shift is truly a guidebook for real estate agents/Realtors old or new, IN ANY MARKET even though it's marketed as (see the title) helping agents through the current "buyer's market". Many agents - with experience limited to the booming "seller's market" we experienced in the US between between 2001 and 2007 - were (and some still are) SHOCKED by the shift in the market and what that did to their business, income, lifestyle, etc. Gary Keller explains what happened (and how it's happened before and will happen again) and what the options are for real estate agents. Those that choose to tough it out and stay in real estate, can learn viable strategies to get leads, convert the leads to contracts, and close and get paid in the current market. In fact, the strategies can (and will) be aptly applied in any market.

Chapter 3 on dealing with "No-Po's" is the most eye-opening sales concept I have heard about in a long time. It's really made me rethink who I'm talking to. My copy of this book is already marked up with sticky notes and tabs.
