At first glance I thought it would be "just another textbook." However, I quickly realized what a goldmine of information and guidance the book delivers. It takes a huge concept and breaks it down into readily usable applications. Too often I will find great theory resources, but they will lack the day-to-day nitty gritty of application. This book has the theory, the steps, the handouts, even the lesson plans. I found the readability engaging and direct. Effective Online Teaching: Foundations and Strategies for Student Success (JOSSEY-BASS HIGHER & ADULT EDUCATION SERIES) ReviewI picked this textbook up at a conference, listened to the author speak about her book and her work, and cannot recommend this highly enough. Whether you are an academic administrator, an educator, a tenured faculty member with years of experience, or the new "adjunct on the block," this book was written with your needs in mind. The unique combination of a clear eyed view of the needs of the student and of faculty, along with a best practices educational psychology perspective makes this book an essential read for everyone whose decisions make a difference in the lives of students. A must read, period. No matter what page I turn to in this book, I find a perspective and a calm wisdom that has me nodding in agreement. There is a companion workbook that includes a cd-rom, also by the same author (I have not obtained that yet, but plan to). Start your semester, whether you are teaching online or not (the book is a handbook of pedagogy, not merely another book about online teaching) with this text... at once transformative and essential. (note to publisher--- change the cover, I saw this on a table at the conference in Madison WI this week, and passed it by specifically because of the cover... I picked it up because Tina's presentation sounded interesting, and was it ever!)Effective Online Teaching: Foundations and Strategies for Student Success (JOSSEY-BASS HIGHER & ADULT EDUCATION SERIES) OverviewIn order to enable the widespread adoption of online education, faculty must be trained in the pedagogy of teaching in this medium. This book offers an understanding of how cognition and learning theory applies to an online learning environment. Through behaviorist, constructivist, and cognitive approaches it provides strategies for incorporating this knowledge into effective learner-centered teaching practice. Each chapter contains reflection and discussion questions and, with the use of the accompanying CD, can be used for self-directed learning. It is ideal for new instructors or those new to online teaching.

The Center for Creative Leadership Handbook of Leadership Development (J-B CCL (Center for Creative Leadership)) ReviewI read the 2nd edition of the Handbook of Leadership Development and it was the best book that I ever read in Leadership Development. I have been wondering if there will be a better book to be published on LD and CCL did it again. This book is packed with ideas and CCL has had no reservation on keeping this knowledge to them only. You will get that Aha almost every page you read. Chapters 1 on Leader Development Systems, 2 on Learning from Experience alone are worth buying the book. There is plenty of solid ideas for leader development in the remaining chapters such as Feedback Intensive Programs, Leadership Coaching, Leader Development and Social Identity. If you are involved with Leader Development, a line manager with the responsibility of developing your own staff, an HR Development guy or even if you are a person that develops and delivers behavioural training programs this book will have plenty of practical ideas for you.

THIS one was satisfyingly different in that it actually took me through the process of innovation. Other books talked ABOUT it, and this one was prescriptive and applicable with every chapter. The authors are incredibly well versed on the topic, and bring a rigor that I was not expecting to find with the recent trend of "light business books." This book is certainly not light, it was informative and entertaining while giving practical step-by-step suggestions.
This was time well spent...I'm curious where the authors will go from here.The Innovator's Way: Essential Practices for Successful Innovation OverviewInnovation is the ruling buzzword in business today. Technology companiesinvest billions in developing new gadgets; business leaders see innovation as thekey to a competitive edge; policymakers craft regulations to foster a climate ofinnovation. And yet businesses report a success rate of only four percent forinnovation initiatives. Can we significantly increase our odds of succeeding atinnovation? In The Innovator's Way, innovation experts Peter Denning and RobertDunham reply with an emphatic yes. Innovation, they write, is not simply aninvention, a policy, or a process to be managed. They have used the most current Web 2.0 trends of communication and collaboration on the web. The book is a great snapshot in time of the current web development state. It appears that the authors believe authentic learning happens when you examine your ideas from all sides and from other points of view. Have I found the book useful? Probably not, as it is not as much about project-based learning as I had hoped. It is more about communication and collaboration and current learning trends than it is about project-based learning. It is however, a wonderful book and a must read for anyone trying to get up to speed in our web dependent world. Read this book now, as it will be out of style after a few years.
