Effective Online Teaching: Foundations and Strategies for Student Success (JOSSEY-BASS HIGHER & ADULT EDUCATION SERIES) ReviewI picked this textbook up at a conference, listened to the author speak about her book and her work, and cannot recommend this highly enough. Whether you are an academic administrator, an educator, a tenured faculty member with years of experience, or the new "adjunct on the block," this book was written with your needs in mind. The unique combination of a clear eyed view of the needs of the student and of faculty, along with a best practices educational psychology perspective makes this book an essential read for everyone whose decisions make a difference in the lives of students. A must read, period. No matter what page I turn to in this book, I find a perspective and a calm wisdom that has me nodding in agreement. There is a companion workbook that includes a cd-rom, also by the same author (I have not obtained that yet, but plan to). Start your semester, whether you are teaching online or not (the book is a handbook of pedagogy, not merely another book about online teaching) with this text... at once transformative and essential. (note to publisher--- change the cover, I saw this on a table at the conference in Madison WI this week, and passed it by specifically because of the cover... I picked it up because Tina's presentation sounded interesting, and was it ever!)Effective Online Teaching: Foundations and Strategies for Student Success (JOSSEY-BASS HIGHER & ADULT EDUCATION SERIES) OverviewIn order to enable the widespread adoption of online education, faculty must be trained in the pedagogy of teaching in this medium. This book offers an understanding of how cognition and learning theory applies to an online learning environment. Through behaviorist, constructivist, and cognitive approaches it provides strategies for incorporating this knowledge into effective learner-centered teaching practice. Each chapter contains reflection and discussion questions and, with the use of the accompanying CD, can be used for self-directed learning. It is ideal for new instructors or those new to online teaching.

Leading 21st-Century Schools: Harnessing Technology for Engagement and Achievement ReviewI read this book for as required reading for an Instructional Technology Leadership graduate class that I am enrolled in. As a future elementary special education teacher, this is not a book that I would typically seek out. However, I think this book is possibly more useful for an individual like myself, than someone who is already a technology leader or the educator with a technologically oriented mindset. The book is well organized and easily accessable even for someone like myself with limited tehcnological expertise.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section is dedicated to presenting information on why it is so important to move towards a more technologically focused education system. The second section concentrates on what can and should be included in this new vision of education. This section strongly emphasises the great potential that the Web 2.0 tools has for educators and students. The final section presents topics relating to the practical considerations involved in being a leader int the 21st Century school.
The book makes a strong case for the importance of changing the focus of the traditional school to include 21st Century skills and technologies. More importantly, the book includes tools, and several real examples to assist the educators who want to play a part in leading their schools in this direction. I often felt mildly inspired and strongly motivated by the examples that the authors presented. I found my mind racing to find ways to implement the tools and strategies in a special education setting. I look forward to using this information in my education career.Leading 21st-Century Schools: Harnessing Technology for Engagement and Achievement OverviewAligned to the ISTE NETS standards for administrators, this guide provides an actionable plan for integrating new technology into teaching and learning and realizing measurable improvement.

Social Media for Trainers: Techniques for Enhancing and Extending Learning (Essential Tools Resource) ReviewThis is the fourth Jane Bozarth book that I've purchased so clearly I'm a fan. The writing is clear and to the point; well-researched and includes numerous personal examples. Most importantly this book is chock full of practical advice. Jane tackles Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, Wikis, and other tools discussing advantages and disavantages of each medium. I especially liked the many activities that she suggests. For example, in the general discussion on Blogs Jane lists at least a dozen different activities such as Case Studies, Debate, Scavenger Hunt, and Round Robin providing explanations of how each activity might work in a blog. As a trainer, I can't wait to to try some of these for myself. Even though the book is a compact 173 pages, I feel it could benefit from an index. Also, as is true of many other training books, this is a bit pricey at $35. Nevertheless, I'm certain that this book will be very useful for a trainer seeking to take advantage of Social Media.
