Producing Video Podcasts: A Guide for Media Professionals ReviewI normally don't write reviews, but after meeting the author at a recent conference, I felt I had to spread the word. This is one of the best books on technology I have read in a while, and I read a lot of tech books for my job. I have been following Richard's podcasts for a couple years, but have never read any of his books, my loss. If you are interested in video podcasting, this is the book for you. Professional Web Video: Plan, Produce, Distribute, Promote, and Monetize Quality Video ReviewAs an amateur video editor with several music videos under my belt, I was hoping that this book could "ground" be in some solid principals. For the most part, this book delivered.
I already knew a lot of the information delivered in this book... and most of what's in here is covered in other books. However, "Web Video" strayed away from techno-babble for the most part; and when it was used, it was justified.
But, to the major point of the book, Professional Web Video: this book is no different from any other book covering the top of digital video production. I suppose that could be taken as a good thing, though, because this book does tell you some key pitfalls to avoid and some essential techniques that you must learn.
Wanna take your YouTube videos to the next level? This is your book. (Except Nataly from Pomplamoose... she doesn't need this book.)
Professional Web Video: Plan, Produce, Distribute, Promote, and Monetize Quality Video Overview
Add professional-level video to your Web communications toolbox with a complete understanding of the process, potential and limitations of Web video. Step up from the mini-cam experience with this solid introduction to professional planning and production techniques, ensuring that your video meets the same standards you set for every other communication program element. Audio, lighting, editing, encoding, are just a few of the essentials you learn how the pros produce top notch video for the Web. The companion Web site includes planning and production templates, demo files, and blog updates to help you put it all to work for you on a daily basis.

Perspectives on Social Media Marketing ReviewSocial Media has almost exploded in recent two to three years, and has suddenly become the main way of consuming information online for the significant number of Internet users. Consequently it has become increasingly important for all sorts of organizations to adjust their online marketing strategies in order to take a full advantage of the power of social media. In the early days attempts by even the largest corporations to reach their users through social media were haphazard at best (see for instance Twitter Power 2.0 for a few examples of good and bad use of Twitter by several companies), but over the last year or so this mode of marketing has really come a long way and has matured considerably.
"Perspectives on Social Media Marketing" aims to bring some up to date insights into this new mode of marketing. The book is organized around 89 topics/questions. Each question is answered by Stephanie Agresta, who represents the perspective of marketing agencies, and by B. Bonin Bough, who represents a brand perspective. These two seem to be quite familiar with this topic and are able to respond to each of the questions in a fairly informative and detailed manner. Nonetheless, the responses feel more like sales pitches than educationally motivated explanations. I find this rather odd, since I presume that whoever is reading this book is already "sold" on the whole idea of social media marketing. The responses are also filled with some mild jargon and overhyped ideas and terms. There are a few useful actionable hints and strategies, but these tend to be few and far between.
Overall, this is a useful book if you are new to social media marketing, as it will provide you with some basic ideas of what this kind of marketing is all about. However, if you are considering launching a social media campaign, or are interested in promoting your product or service through social media, then you may be disappointed in the amount of useful advice that this book contains.
Perspectives on Social Media Marketing OverviewPERSPECTIVES ON SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING addresses 89 of the most compelling and important issues that marketers face on a regular basis when it comes to social media, providing advice and insight on how to deal with each issue from the perspective of two thought leaders in this arena: Stephanie Agresta from Porter Novelli and B. Bonin Bough from PepsiCo. Together, they discuss what social media is, how it has changed the marketing landscape, how to implement a tactical and strategic social media plan across your organization, how to best measure the ROI of a social media campaign, and more.

YouTube and Video Marketing: An Hour a Day ReviewWhen I received YouTube and Video Marketing: An Hour a Day I dove straight into it. I'm a technical person and have been working with Marketers all my life either to build systems or help in presales engagements. As Marketing has is becoming an online experience more and more, it makes sense to arm oneself with knowledge of the various media options. YupTube, like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook are become forces to deal with in the online world.
Initially I expected a Step by Step, how-to guide. However as I dug through the book I kept asking myself when I was going to get to the first step. It isn't until halfway in that I started to find some technical aspects of how-to. But even these were not the "here's how" I expected. After completing the book, I initially felt I had not really gotten what I had hoped for.
However, I then reread the book. This time with a marketer's perspective. It reads more like a novel than an procedures manual and has one linger and investigate how others are engaging community and creating effective followings through YouTube Marketing. My opinion changed from a (2) to (4) stars after that insight. If you are looking for a technical step by step of loading videos, skip this book. If however, you want to get a flavor of how ours are being successful marketing with you tube and the elements to build your own campaigns. This is worth the investment and a second reading.

Google Talking ReviewI don't use much Google Talk (most of the people I talk to use IRC, SILC, or AIM as real-time chat), but I have had the opportunity to use it some. I was looking forward to this book to see if it would be worthwhile to learn more about Google Talk and how to get more out of it. I have to say that I'm disappointed in the quality of the writing and the organization of the book. The writing tries to be cute and funny, but the clarity suffers dramatically for it (the requirements discussion in Chap 2, plug-ins in Chap 5, etc). Furthermore, the organization of the book jumps around too much, mixing core usage of GTalk and extra uses (ie video or audio chats) too much. If the book had kept a basic theme to it -- put the common stuff up front, then talk about extras slowly and with increasing complexity and rarity -- it would have helped. However, unlike many Syngress books, this one uses screen shots effectively and clearly.
Chapter 1 is sort of what you would expect it to be, an overview of many of the popular, modern chat clients: AIM, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, ICQ. The author slams the competition and champions Google (Google fanboy-type stuff is pretty common throughout the book) as the savior of chat. Sadly, this overview is incomplete and limited, and sets the tone of the book.
Chapter 2 talks about installing Google Talk for Windows users, and spends a lot of time talking about tangential subject matter. This is where the book's main flaw -- poor organization and a lack of clarity -- really starts to show. The book wastes some space on requirements for video and audio chats (which are not core Google Talk uses), and really skimps on the installation.
Chapter 3 talks about using Google Talk for non-Windows users. This chapter is a bit muddled, and perhaps it's because the author isn't a native OS X or Linux user. A couple of things: really, any Jabber client can work (there are dozens), and Gaim is basically the same for Linux and other supported platforms.
Chapter 4 is perhaps the most poorly organized of them all. The chapter skips around in usage, talking about basic chat usage, contact management, then over to music listings, chatting, voice chats and voice mail, file sharing, and so on. The section on personalizing Gtalk is very poorly presented.
Chapter 5 is a lengthy, mishmash of a chapter on plugins. Had the author organized the plugins better this wouldn't have been so bad, but again, the quality of presentation keeps it unclear. I had to look at a few sections a couple of times to try and figure out what was going on, including the section on theme modification. I wound up more confused about these extensions as I went along. Not a very good thing in a book!
Chapter 6 talks about proxies (as you might find in a corporate environment, in a Tor situation, or with SSH tunnels). Sadly, the section on Tor talks more about Tor basics (very incomepletely) than about how to make GTalk work with Tor. Very lousy presentation of how to set up SSH tunnels, too, with incomplete steps at every turn.
Chapter 7 -- GTalk in the Enterprise -- is a neat idea, although it could have been implemented more completely. Because many enterprises have strict IM policies, they will either want to standardize on GTalk or ban it, and so both topics are (poorly, and incompletely) covered. I like this idea a lot, and I think this could have been more completely covered. I think that more books on applications should cover this sort of concept more often.
Two appendices round out the book. Appendix A covers video chats, and honestly should have been included in a standalone chapter devoted GTalk and video (and audio) chats, which would have cut down on a lot of the confusion in the "basic usage" chapter.
Appendix B covers free video calling software, and is kind of wierd -- it doesn't look like these apps integrate with GTalk, but rather would replace GTalk with video. I don't get why they're in the book, to be honest.
All in all not the best book I've read. I don't like writing negative reviews of books, but I have to be honest with this one: it's not well done. The organization is poor (it's downright confusing!), the writing is unclear (it tries to be too cute for its own good), and the coverage is weak and incomplete. If you want to learn how to use GTalk, look elsewhere, this one will not be of much use.Google Talking OverviewNationwide and around the world, instant messaging use is growing, with more than 7 billion instant messages being sent every day worldwide, according to IDC. comScore Media Metrix reports that there are 250 million people across the globe--and nearly 80 million Americans--who regularly use instant messaging as a quick and convenient communications tool. Curation Nation: How to Win in a World Where Consumers are Creators ReviewCuration Nation could use some curation itself. The book contains a lot of information, but it doesn't really say anything. The first 100 pages summary: there is a lot of crap on the Internet and it needs to be curated... I know that already, that's why I bought your book!
It goes on to profile different acts of curation such as the Huffington Post, aggregation through twitter, blogging, etc. Nothing really jaw dropping. Don't expect a unique insight here. Chapter 4 says don't piss of your consumers with crappy customer service because they have a voice now...this book was published in 2011 right? Do people/companies not know this by now? Did we really need a whole chapter on this?
The book's plea is "attention is the new economy." I partly agree with this, but don't expect this book to give any spectacular information on how to turn that attention into a tangible profit making business. While the book's purpose is not solely making money off of curation, it does suggests more of a "build it and they shall come" strategy hoping for your attention to somehow be monetized later through advertisers. If that floats your boat, this book may be for you.
Curation Nation contains thoughts from notable figures such as Clay Shirky, Alan Webber, Robert Scoble, Andrew Keen, Seth Godin, Mark Cuban, and others. Unfortunately none of the interviews led you the reader to know where curation is headed...all they know is we need it. Again, I know we need it, that's why I bought this book for some direction and to help make sense of it all. Ughhh
Alan Webber perhaps gives the best quote from the book: "Nobody has figured out a killer model of what exactly is exciting about a wonderfully produced movie, magazine, book, or record. Creating unique, memorable content isn't a formula -it's a happy accident. In the same way publishers struggle to figure out curation, there will be few leaders and lots of followers searching for the future economic model for content."
Curation Nation is for the lowest common denominator who are absolutely clueless that there is too much unfiltered information online and that it needs to be sorted. It will fill you in, provide you with a history of how we got here (unnecessary to the book) and where we currently are with no breathtaking insights. You'll get a bunch of information, but again, the book doesn't say much other than we need curation.
With the text being 259 Pages, it could have been cut AT LEAST in half. The future of curation fascinates me very much and I wanted to like this book. I expected this book to be GREAT judging by all the big name endorsements...but sadly I was let down.
P.S. If you happen to stumble across this book in the bookstore, just skip to the conclusion...you'll get all you need to know about the book saving you time in our limited "attention based economy."Curation Nation: How to Win in a World Where Consumers are Creators Overview

About the Book:

Let's face it, we're drowning in data. Our inboxes are flooded with spam, we have too many "friends" on Facebook, and our Twitter accounts have become downright unmanageable. Creating content is easy; finding what matters is hard.

Fortunately, there is a new magic that makes the Web work. It's called curation, and it enables people to sort through the digital excess and find what's relevant.

In Curation Nation, Steven Rosenbaum reveals why brands, publishers, and content entrepreneurs must embrace aggregation and curation to grow an existing business or launch a new one. In fact, he asserts that curation is the only way to be competitive in the future.

Overwhelmed by too much content, people are hungry for an experience that both takes advantage of the Web's breadth and depth and provides a measure of human sorting and filtering that search engines simply can't achieve. In these shifting sands lies an extraordinary business opportunity: you can become a trusted source of value in an otherwise meaningless chaos of digital noise.

In Curation Nation, Rosenbaum "curates the curators" by gathering togetherpriceless insight and advice from the top thinkers in media, advertising, publishing, commerce, and Web technologies. This groundbreaking book levels the playing field, giving your business equal access to the content abundance presently driving consumer adoption of the Web.

As the sheer volume of digital information in the world increases, the demand for quality and context becomes more urgent. Curation will soon be a part of your business and your digital world.Understand it now, join in early, and reap the many benefits Curation Nation has to offer.
