Social Pollination: Escape the Hype of Social Media and Join the Companies Winning At It ReviewIf you own a small business (or large one, for that matter) you've heard the buzz about social media. You've been told and told again you NEED to get on it, but you have no idea where to start. Monica Obrien's social pollination is where every business should start. It should be on the desk of every business owner looking to dive into social media, or thinking about hiring someone to do it for them. The book comes armed with relevant case studies, insight from leading experts, and most importantly, step by step guides for beginners (and experts). After reading the book, the reader will answer four important questions:
1) What is social media and how can it be leveraged as a business tool?
2) Is social media right for me? What business objectives can it help MY business achieve?
3) What are the specifics tactics and steps I need to take to accomplish those objectives in a cost-effective, timely manner?
4) How can I track and measure my progress and ROI.
There are many social media books that do a phenomenal job explaining how social media is changing the business world. However most of them stop there, and the reader is left thinking "ok, well, now what?" Monica picks up where those books leave off, by providing actionable tactics and tips business owners can implement immediately after reading.
The book does not tout social media as a cure all solution, like many experts and books seem to do. Instead she encourages readers to think of social media as a business TOOL. The author helps the reader understand the types of goals and objectives they might hope to accomplish, before deciding if social media is worth it for them.
From there, she provides a thorough overview of best practices and specific strategies. It a comprehensive guide book that a marketing team can use to get started right away. At the very least, it can be used to combat any outside social media hires who are charging without adding any real value.
All in all, this is a must read for business owners, marketing professionals, or students looking to understand the next monumental shift in marketing/advertising.Social Pollination: Escape the Hype of Social Media and Join the Companies Winning At It OverviewAbout Social PollinationSocial pollination is simply brands and organizations populating social media sites with content to let the message spread further than traditional marketing techniques would allow. In the past, company websites were a place for people to learn about brands; now, people turn to social media sites for this information. In response, companies are creating content that can be shared easily across social platforms. Social pollination is about embracing the power of communities and using it to your advantage. What you will learn in Social Pollination' The 7 business goals social media is best suited for' How to create a social media strategy that makes sense for your business goals' Which specific platforms YOU should build a presence on' The 12 social media success factors and how to optimize them to go viral on any social network' How to create content that people want to share' How publicity and advertising can improve your results' Advanced techniques to measure your social media campaigns' How to build a social media team and optimize your time with social mediaPraise for the Author"Monica knows which social media tools work in every situation." Citizen Marketers: When People Are the Message ReviewOne of the first things that struck me when I began reading Citizen Marketers, was the ability that Ben and Jackie (calling them McConnell and Huba just doesn't fit) have to take a concept as misunderstood as Social Media, and scale it down to where it is accessible to all, and to do so without talking down to the reader. In fact, the book does such a good job of giving background on the various forms of social media, that it can double as a general primer on the subject.
But where CM shines is in explaining what exactly Citizen Marketing is, who these people are, and what motivates them. I'll be honest, going into reading this book, I was a bit worried that this would simply be a collection of case studies providing examples of citizen marketing, bookended with an introduction and conclusion chapter. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, Ben and Jackie have done exhaustive research into the subject of citizen marketing, and instead of simply rehashing examples such as the CGM buzz behind Snakes on a Plane, Jarvis' Dell Hell, or the liberation of Fiona Apple (quite possibly my favorite story in the book, which I'd never heard of previously), Ben and Jackie talked to all the parties involved, and discovered what they did, why they did it, and who they did it for.
Their conclusion was that they were dealing with, concerned citizens. Citizens whose love of their favorite brand compelled them to take action on its behalf. And thanks to the rise of the internet, and more specifically social media, those concerned citizens not only have the tools necessary to produce their own brand marketing, they have the ability to reach others, and mobilize them to share their cause. One person's blog post lamenting the cancellation of a favorite TV show can blossom into a full-fledged petition drive that saves the series. A bad customer service experience at a fast food restaurant can be recorded and uploaded to YouTube within minutes. Jarvis' post about his dissatisfaction over his Dell erupted into Dell Hell, which eventually forced the Austin-based computer maker to totally re-examine their customer-service, and revamp their policy on reading and responding to bloggers(IOW, creating a policy for reading and responding to bloggers).
But in my opinion, the heart of the book lies in Ben and Jackie's breakdown of Citizen Marketers into four distinct categories, which they have dubbed 'The Four Fs', all with their own motivations for their actions:
1. Filters
The Filters collect all manner of stories, blog posts, podcasts, etc. related to a specific topic, and present them in one place. These filters serve mainly as an aggregator for content in all forms related to a particular topic, but also add their own analysis and commentary on occasion.
2. Fanatics
The Fanatics are very similar to evangelists. They love(obsess?) over their favorite brand/product/person/company, and are committed to informing others about this topic. They are in the truest sense of the term 'Customer Evangelist'. But they also have great love for the brand/company/person, and aren't afraid to criticize any action that they feel is detrimental to its progress.
3. Facilitators
Facilitators are community creators/builders. They bring like-minded individuals together around a central framework, usually an only forum or blog. Ben and Jackie liken them to 'online mayors'.
4. Firecrackers
Firecrackers are the one-hit wonders of citizen marketers. They may create a hit sensation viral video, or a blogging meme, and then never be heard from again. As with their namesake, they burn very brightly and quickly, and burn out just as rapidly.
In conclusion, buy this book. It isn't a marketing book, it's a book about your community of customers. What motivates them, and what inspires them to take action, both on behalf of, and against your brand. A customer is shaken from their apathy toward a brand, and spurned to action either in response to a brand's indifference towards them, or as a result of the brand's reaching out and offering the hand of empowerment to them. Right now your brand likely sits on one side of this fence, and gaining a better understanding of your customers and what gives them the incentive to act, will help you understand how they view you.
Citizen Marketers: When People Are the Message Overview""A solid... insightful explanation of how the Internet has armed the consumer—which is to say, everyone—against the mindless blather of corporate messaging attempts. Drop everything and read this book.""—The Wall Street JournalThe woman next to you in the coffee shop, typing madly on her laptop, just might be determining the ending to next year's block-buster film or how quickly the hottest new PDAT hits store shelves. In homes, dorm rooms, waiting rooms, planes and trains around the world, millions of people are exercising enormous influence on what we buy, even though they have no official connection to those products and services. Who are they? What motivates them? Marketing experts Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba explore the ramifications of social media in Citizen Marketers. As everyday people increasingly create content on behalf of companies, brands or products, they are collaborating with others just like themselves and forming ever-growing communities of enhusiasts and evangelists. Fromthe rough to the sophisticated, the ""user-generated media"" of blogs, online bulletin boards, podcasts, photos, songs, and animations are influencing companies' customer relationships, product design, and marketing campaigns, whether they participate willingly or not. Citizen Marketers is the first book to document this phenomenon, examining some of the early winners and losers in this new genre, as well as some of its most noted constituents. With their exceptional knowledge of brands, products, companies and industries, the citizen marketers are democratizing traditional notions of communication and marketing, even entire business models.Features:
Research on social media
Case studies of people and organizations fueling the growth of citizen marketing
Clarifies the context and importance of technological and societal shifts that are changing the nature of customer expectations and relationships

The AMA Handbook of Public Relations Review
I loved it. Impressive. I won't say it is a "detailed" handbook to use to actually become expert at PR in the 21st century. But it is a wonderful book that covers the following:
>>New media [Web sites, blogs, & mircoblogs]
>>Old media [Newspapers, magazines, etc.]
>>Public speaking
>>Market research
>>Tactics for keeping up digitally
I'm not sure why "market research" was included. But then the book is sponsored by the AMA. I found the text to be well written and outlined. It is comprised of four parts that are broken into 19 chapters and three appendices. I urge you to examine the Search Inside feature Amazon provides for this book so you can see the 19 chapter titles.
Back in May, 2009 I read and reviewed Putting the Public Back in Public Relations: How Social Media Is Reinventing the Aging Business of PR. In that review I commented that there should have been a chapter on Investor Relations. Well, the instant book has one. See Chapter 13 and the related chapter on The Annual Report (14). I like both books. And I think they compliment one another. I highly recommend any public relations professional who wants to be competent in their field and make things happen today read both as companion books. 5 stars! The AMA Handbook of Public Relations OverviewPublic relations was among the first industries to harness the power of the Internet. But along with business and the rest of the world, PR has changed in the digital age. "The AMA Handbook of Public Relations" is written to help PR professionals merge their traditional and Web-based campaigns into a powerful multi-faceted public image machine while protecting their clients and themselves from negative attention and cyber-sabotage. Readers will learn how to work with trade and consumer media, leverage technology including blogs, podcasts and social networking sites, monitor the Web, manage rumors and crises and quantify online PR efforts and the results they create.

Tactical Transparency: How Leaders Can Leverage Social Media to Maximize Value and Build their Brand (J-B International Association of Business Communicators) ReviewHoltz and Havens put together the business book I've been hoping for. The premise of this groundbreaking business-strategy book is that companies need to be more forthcoming with information about the internal workings of their business. There are three "publics" that a business deals with, according to this book: external (the public), internal (employees) and investors.
From Enron to AIG, opacity in how executives make decisions has cost investors, employees and investors dearly, and the government is stepping up regulations to force companies to be more transparent. Holtz and Havens show that companies that have been transparent all along--with liberal employee-blog policies, social marketing policies and releasing what was once sensitive information (financials, research, opinions, and the handling of corporate mistakes and blunders)--have always fared better and retained the loyalty of their publics even in bad times.
There are concerns to being transparent. Some information is not for competitors' eyes, and some information cannot be legally exposed, especially in publicly traded companies. But the argument for releasing as much information as possible is put forth quite admirably.
By being transparent, a company becomes motivated by honesty, not greed. The employees have a better understanding if the bottom line, and investors feel more confident about the management decisions. A two-way conversation with the public means that a company is better positioned to compete.
The most important points that Holtz and Havens make are that corporate transparency is a legal, moral and competitive requirement, and that transparency among businesses is inevitable, that opacity is not only futile, but self-destructive.
I strongly recommend this book, with a rating of A+. Not only was I inspired by what Holtz and Havens wrote, I am moved to incorporate their ideas into the Flying Pen Press way of business.
Tactical Transparency: How Leaders Can Leverage Social Media to Maximize Value and Build their Brand (J-B International Association of Business Communicators) OverviewWhile exposing the risks inherent in maintaining a nontransparent relationship with customers, Tactical Transparency provides a methodology that will help your organization create its unique plan to bring greater authenticity to your company and your brands. Drawn largely from interviews with leaders in companies that have achieved measurable success in this arena, authors Shel Holtz and John C. Havens provide step-by-step details on how executives and professional communicators can create a transparency strategy that will keep their organization competitive in the twenty-first century. The authors show how organizations can evaluate their readiness for transparency, what they need to do to get ready, and how to effectively communicate their transparency strategy to their customers and employees. They also identify aspects of blog/new media "netiquette" an important but often misunderstood part of engaging in transparency.

Competitive Debate: The Official Guide ReviewI advise the student-led debate club at our community college. Though I believe the guide was written primarily for high school debate coaches, I bought copies for the officers of our debate club after first reading it myself. The guide is straight-forward and has a lot of clear explanations and examples that can be applied immediately. Though I have to buy copies of this guide out of my own pocket since we don't have a budget for them in my department, I will be purchasing them again this year for my students - I think it is a good investment.Competitive Debate: The Official Guide OverviewThe bible for debaters and their coaches. Nearly every high school and college in America has a debate club and/or a debate team. There are hundreds of competitions at the county and state level, culminating in heated national competitions. Yet, at many high schools and colleges, coaches are drawn from the history or English departments with little or no experience in the highly structured procedures of this popular discipline. And while competitive debate has been growing each year as a prime academic activity, there have been no popular handbooks to help students and coaches prepare for contests effectively and efficiently. Practical and authoritative, this guide includes not only tips and guidelines for effective preparation and delivery, but full-length, actual transcripts of successful competitions in each format. Endorsed by the two national governing bodies for competitive debate—the National Federation of State High School Associations and the National Forensic League—and priced for the budget-conscious student and high school teacher alike, Competitive Debate: The Official Guide is set to become the instructional "bible" for tens of thousands of present and future debaters and their coaches. Inside, Dr. Richard Edwards—award winning debate coach, professor, former competitive debate judge, and author—leads readers through the three popular formats of competitive debate: • Policy Debate • Lincoln-Douglas Debate • Public Forum Debate

The Myth of Digital Democracy ReviewI read in threes and fours, this book is part of the set that includes SMS Uprising: Mobile Activism in Africa and Wiki Government: How Technology Can Make Government Better, Democracy Stronger, and Citizens More Powerful.
This book educated me. It challenged and soundly negated some of my assumptions, but it also reinforced my view that the Internet at this time is a communications network, not a knowledge network or an action network.
Here is the last paragraph:
"Yet where the Internet has failed to live up to its billing has to do with the most direct kind of political voice. If we consider the ability of ordinary citizens to write things that other people will see, the Internet has fallen far short of the claims that continue to be made about it. It may be easy to speak in cyberspace, but it remains difficult to be heard."
Totally awesome. This is an impressive piece of work. At Phi Beta Iota I am posting four web diagrams showing top news and political sites and a couple of other things (I no longer post images to Amazon after they removed 354 images as a lazy way of censoring twelve copies of Obama-Bush sharing the same face--I no longer trust Amazon with my work, hence Phi Beta Iota--and a lesson about Internet abuse).
Behind this elegant book is a great deal of hard work with lots of math, lots of elbow grease, and lots of time spent making sense of massive amounts of data. I am totally impressed.
High points for me, having earlier raved about Joe Trippi's The Revolution Will Not Be Televised: Democracy, the Internet, and the Overthrow of Everything as well as Cass Sunstein's Republic.com:
01) Digital divide is not the only divide--Internet is a winner take all environment
02) Liberals predominate online
03) Googlearchy has replaced meritocracy...top ten sites rule, everyone else go fish
04) Pornography and webmail are the two big dogs on the Internet, followed by search engines and a very small news set. In comparison to webmail, news is less than 20%, and in comparison to news, politics is perhaps 1% at best (of news--a tiny tiny fraction of it all).
05) The author does not really get into the deep web, the reality that there are over 75 search engines and Goolge is losing marketshare, or the fact that China and India and Brazil are creeping up and will one day soon hit a vertical rise in their web presence, especially now that kanji and other webname character sets are accepted.
06) The heart of the book, but not the bulk of the book, is about the "missing middle" and the very real fact that ordinary citizens are neither seen nor heard within the Internet overall and within the political chambers of the Internet particularly.
My review does not do this book justice. It is profoundly deeper than my summary above.
The book does reinforce my view that we must get all research and all budgets online, and that we must create the World Brain Institute and the Global Game, mandate true cost information online, and start using citizen buying power to move capitalism in a more moral sustainable useful direction (see my review just posted of Come Home America: The Rise and Fall (and Redeeming Promise) of Our Country and my many other reviews of books on capitalism, one more of which I will mention here, The Genius of the Beast: A Radical Re-Vision of Capitalism.

The Wealthy Freelancer: 12 Secrets to a Great Income and an Enviable Lifestyle ReviewThere are two types of freelancers this book will help - those just starting out and those who have been struggling to achieve their dreams of becoming a wealthy freelancer.
If you are just starting out, this is a great resource that will save you countless hours of going down the wrong trail. If you have been at it for awhile but not achieving the success you desire, this book will give you some solid tips and techniques to get you on the right path.
The first thing you should get clear about is being a wealthy freelancer means different things to different people. It is not all about money. Money is important and this book has plenty of tips on how to increase your income. But living the life you want is much more important than just making money. So this book has lots of tips and suggestions on how to decide what is important to you and how to balance your work with other areas of your life.
The book starts off with a discussion about what being a wealthy freelancer really means. This sets the tone for the rest of the book. It is very important that you understand the realities of being a freelancer, both the benefits and the downside.
Then the next twelve chapters give secrets to being a successful freelancer - starting with the most important secret - Mastering the Mental Game. "Research continues to tell us that most people simply do not take the time to set goals and put them in writing." If you are going to be successful, you must get clear on what you want, who you want to work with and what value you are going to bring to your clients.
Another very important secret is how to create an amazing buzz piece. The authors go into great detail to explain what a buzz piece is and how to craft one that will attract potential clients. They give one of the best blueprints for creating a USP that I have seen. If you don't know what a USP is or have not crafted your own, you really need to get this book.
There are 10 other secrets to help any freelancer move forward toward their goals. At the end of each chapter is a summary - called Wealthy Takeaways- which recaps the important points in that chapter. Also there are lots or additional resources throughout the book.
This is a very well organized and written book. It is not based on some theory. It is written as a joint effort of three highly successful freelancers. They each give very specific examples from their own experience. You will get great value from reading this book. Implement the lessons and you can become a wealthy freelancer. The Wealthy Freelancer: 12 Secrets to a Great Income and an Enviable Lifestyle Overview Being your own boss can lead to incredible profits-here's how... Not only does this book help people new to the concepts of marketing, but also to those who are familiar with them but now need to apply them to the nonprofit world.
The book is not only helpful to those who are in charge of external communications but anyone involved in representing the organization. This book would be a great addition to the library of any development team or nonprofit leader. The clear explanations and practical applications really made me feel confident in my new found responsibilities at work. I worried that the content of this book might be just a rehashing of nonprofit-marketing content from Kivi's blog or other sites but was very happy to find a wealth of new practical information organized in a very clear way.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking out ways to get new people interested in getting involved with your nonprofit. The Nonprofit Marketing Guide: High-Impact, Low-Cost Ways to Build Support for Your Good Cause (The Jossey-Bass Nonprofit Guidebook Series) OverviewA nonprofit's real-world survival guide and nitty-gritty how-to handbook
